Remember Last Year Volume 4
James Walker, writer for the AFC North blog on ESPN.com, put together his 4th list of comments that people had to say about the division during this time last summer. It is always quite intriguing to see how big of fools some people make themselves. Notice how very few, if any, sound like hey came from Ravens fans. Comments dealing with the Ravens in Bold.
- "Big, big year with Ben Utecht. He gives the Bengals a 2WR + TE formation that will put up a TON of yards."
- "Chad Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Ben Utecht, Antonio Chatman, second-rounder Jerome Simpson, third-rounder Andre Caldwell, a healthy Rudi Johnson, a healthy Chris Perry and the best pass blocking O-Line in the NFL... Cincinnati's offense will be in the top 10 -- no question."
- "If Martin Rucker translates his college game into the pros then Braylon Edwards, Donte' Stallworth, Kellen Winslow and Rucker would be the sickest combination of receivers in the league!"
- "Look up the road to the Dawg Pound for the best o-line in football."
- "I love Steeler fans. They talk as though what happened in 1988 (a year the Browns happened to make the playoffs, by the way) has any relevance on what will happen in the 2008 season. Similarly, your Super Bowl rings mean absolutely jack to what will happen this year."
- "Kyle Boller will start against the Bengals [in Week 1]. Troy Smith is a hoax and even Lloyd's of London won't insure Joe Flacco is he goes behind the Ravens putrid offensive line."
- "It really doesn't matter who starts at quarterback for the Ravens. There isn't a quality tackle on the offensive line, and whoever is back there is going to get killed."
- "As a Bengals fan, I hope the controversy in Baltimore over their sorry list of QBs continues until the day before opening day. With a terrible offensive line and two aging corners and one suspended [Fabian Washington] the Bengals will be toasting them all day long in the passing game. The Ravens are a few years away from contending for our [Bengals] AFC North crown this year."
- "Flacco may start later in the season, but he is not ready yet. It would be a big mistake to get him under center so early."
- "I have had the opportunity to watch Braylon Edwards at two practices this season, including Friday's Family Night at Browns Stadium. I can't help but notice there is something different about Edwards this year, an intangible. His performances so far that I have witnessed have been exceptional. Also, looking surprisingly solid has been reserve quarterback Ken Dorsey."
- "It's extremely unlikely anyone in the AFC North will win 11 games this year."
- "I will tell you what, let's play some Madden and then talk trash later."
- "Enjoy your No. 1 schedule. I'll enjoy watching the league pound Pittsburgh into the ground."
- "Where are all these Browns fans coming from? I'll give it two more years."
- "The Browns do not have a single rookie starting this year!! The Steelers will be lucky to go 6-10 this year. I just hope the Browns win the North by four games over the Steelers because I don't want to read about all the good teams the Steelers had to play. BROWNS 11-5, BUNGLES 8-8, RATBIRDS 8-8, STEELERS 6-10."
The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

These never get old
This is the reason why I never make overbold or overzealous predictions
Gotta laugh at the Ben Utecht and Browns comments. Bengals have an outside shot of a decent season, Mangini is bringing in all his former backups to START for the Browns
I think its going to be a season of Purple vs Black and Gold again

pitt has the mojo man. it will be tough to win 1 from you. just by having ward and ben your O is better. we can’t defend either of those guys. mason can’t get open against you. and flacco better improve vs you. i still feel that we need to ram McClaine down your throat and throw deep.

You never know
This just goes to show just how volatile the league is. The Bengals are in a tough position because the Ravens and Steelers have a consistency born of a stable core. They generally don’t draft players with the expectation that they will contribute their first year. I think the light may have come on in Bengaldom. They are building a core of players to build around hopefully can start drafting for the future. The problem is that they are under such pressure to win that they expend resources on quick fixes not solid value. Once you have a solid core you can draft for the future, develop players and just plug them in when you lose guys. Pittsburg is great at that and the Ravens are pretty good as well. I am hopeful that we can join the club. This division needs to be more than a 2 team race.
That being said, I am not one of those guys who predict a playoff contention for the Bengals this year. Next year – maybe, but not this year. Oh it could happen I suppose if things fall right but Baltimore and Pittsburg will probably duke it out for the division and with the easier schedule probably both make the playoffs. I just want a solid contender in Cincy and a foundation to build on.

Reasonable Comments
Playing the Ravens and Steelers four times each year makes it tough for Cincy AND Cleveland to compete in the next few years based on the cores of those top teams. Perhaps one lucky season, such as Cleveland’s 2007 one, but more than likely, building for the distant future – or at least I hope!

All of this doesnt matter
If you listen to the so called experts the Steelers and Ravens can give up now and just give the Lombardi to the Golden boy Tom Brady and the Pats. As far as they are concerned the top two defences in the league ( my Steelers being number one Ravens number two) dont have a chance! They should put the pats in the AFC North and see what happens. Theres no way they could handle Steelers, Ravens four times in one year. Heres hoping our rivalary stays alive and never gets boring!

very true. thats 2 games every year that requires it ALL on the table. i mean crazy intensity. we struggle to get ready for the next game after mauling each other. add the pats to this division and they are limping around hoping to beat Buffalo and the Jets to sneak into the playoffs….with that said, we can’t beat either you or the pats.AAARGH!!!
