Bennett Retires

After a preexisting knee injury flared up following Drew Bennett's tryout with the Ravens, the wide receiver has decided to hang it up, according to Adam Schefter.  This revelation is just another setback for a position that seems to be cursed for the city of Baltimore.  This should make for a very interesting week leading into training camp.  Expect to see the front office scramble in the coming week to tryout any other free agent receivers or try to coerce Mason out of retirement.

What the hell did we do to deserve this stuff? How do you come in for a workout, say you are ready to sign a contract, then just do this. Wasted our time and now we are in an even more terrible situation.

Thanks Drew Bennett and thanks to the front office. LETS GO YAMON FIGURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nope

Not only do we not sign WR with character issues, we won’t sign a WR who does not want to actually play next year.

We just got played……….hard!

I heard this on the radio driving into work today. To be honest I did chuckle a bit, but that’s some horrible luck.

Yea man

I just do not see how we can let this happen. What about his physical and all that stuff? We thought we were set to start training camp, but now we are going to have to bring someone in and have him learn on the fly with even less time than Bennett had.

You have Casey Hampton who is obviously better then Ngata based on the Madden Rankings.

Hampton: 91
Ngata: 90

Hampton is getting old

Ngata has youth that our defense needs

by John Stephens on Jul 27, 2009 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I still love the fact that a reason for why the Ravens defense is going to fall off every year is because “we are getting old.” But the only reason people say that is because of Ray Lewis being 34, when the average age of our starters on defense is 28.

What is for Pitt, 30? Harrison is a beast and everything, but he is 31 and has about 2-3 more years of solid play in him. He will not return to DPOY play every again.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 27, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

31, I think I read somewhere

I don’t think his age is the biggest reason he won’t be DPOY. Its really difficult to repeat. Mostly because offenses are more aware of you. Plus it takes a crazy statistical season to win.

Also, I don’t talk about your D’s age, just Ray’s. He is very important to your defense and I do not think he is as easily replaceable as Bart Scott or Adaliausisus (sp?) Thomas. We’ll have to wait and see how that transition goes though.

by John Stephens on Jul 27, 2009 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Just a few too many isus’s in there. Adalius.

Of the 11 starters our team is 29 (rounded up from 28.7)

Thats with Gay as a starter instead of Townsend.

Timmons (23) and Gay and Woodley (24) help lower that number. Our who DL is 30+

Also

Ngata is one of the most athletic big men, if not the most athletic, in the league for DT. Did you know that coming out of high school, he ran a 4.79 forty yard dash? Casey Hampton is just some fat POS who only knows how to move forward. I would love to see Hampton drop back in coverage and actually get 2 picks that he caused. Ngata does that. Not talking shit to you either.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 27, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats all well and fair

But as it stands right now Hampton’s NT IQ > Ngata’s. Hampton knows how to occupy his space, plug holes, and occupy blockers better than any NT in the league, IMO. One day, Ngata may have that intelligence, but right now he doesn’t have that.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 27, 2009 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure they will try to argue that

Hampton should never have even put on football gear because he could never amount to Ngata.

You cannot pick up more information in 3 years than another guy picked up in 8.

by BradyQuinnisBeast on Jul 27, 2009 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Your right
But as it stands right now Hampton’s NT IQ > Ngata’s.

Like you said, it’s experience. Ngata is a very smart and studious player but does not have the service time in the NFL that Hampton has.

Haloti is scary already. Once he masters the position he will become the most dominant force known to man, rivaling, dare I say, Shaun Rogers.

by DT711 on Jul 27, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

I won’t argue that. I’ve stated before I’d trade for him. He is a beast now and has yet to peak. I’ll start taking offers. I will trade any of our O-line for him (come on they have SB rings!)

by John Stephens on Jul 27, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Realistically

The only guy one your team I would give up for Ngata is Palamalu.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 27, 2009 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

No team would ever be able to throw against that team.

by John Stephens on Jul 27, 2009 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Really?

Ngata is younger and w/o him are LB’s would not be nearly as good. Troy is great, don’t get me wrong, but we will be good back there with Reed and Landry. I would not make that trade.

by DT711 on Jul 27, 2009 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean if the trade came up today, of course I would not accept it. Ngata is a top 3 priority on our defense and I am very, very happy with Landry at SS who will become a dominant force in this league.

Just saying that the only guy on the Pittsburgh team that can be brought into this conversation is Troy.

Wait a Minute

Do not be so quick to throw Drew under the bus. I will defend him, and not just because I had him on my fantasy team in 2004 and he did quite well for me, thank you very much.

I will defend him because his knee did not swell up on him until he flew back home. He obviously felt okay at the Ravens, but only later realized there was no way he could compete at an elite level. Having tried to revive my own non-football athletic career, the mind is willing but the body is on a beach in Tahiti… In my situation, a case of Plantar Fasciitis that just will not go away as I cannot get past running just a few miles; sprinting or kicking is out of the question for me…

Ravens again all set to defy the experts

Last year you weren’t amounting to anything. This year your a playoff lock. so they predict.

by steelerstyle on Jul 27, 2009 9:48 PM EDT reply actions

From what I’ve seen, it’s been a mixed bag. I’ve seen some people saying that we’re a lock, while others have predicted a huge slump. Most people have predicted that we’ll challenge the Steelers for the AFC North title with a chance at the playoffs in the competitive AFC. Cooler heads will prevail, although it’s a much tougher guessing game now that Baltimore is where wide receivers go to die.

Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.

by Ampallang on Jul 27, 2009 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

9-7 at best with these receivers (lack of receivers). well, it was a good career for Flacco. now we get to watch him triple pump and get face planted when Clayton can’t shed a LB.
i hope heap and dwilliams do the ’ol NFL hand hold prayer for Flax as they watch injured from the sidelines.

I'm tired of hearing about the WR lack of WR BS

The teams that have the big named WRs who are they and where were they last year during the Super Bowl? Yes Arizona has two of the biggest names in the game and was in the Super Bowl but they lost. Ward at one point was one of the bigger names but truly no longer is, the Steelers only passed last year because they had to, not because that is normally what works for them. New England yes had a great season with Moss year before last and did well last year considering they were using a at the time nobody backup QB, but Moss came into a system that already had great passing numbers with average WRs.

Look at who we have:

Figurs, Yamon 16 Wide Receiver / Return Specialist 5’11"
As a return guy he is used to having to run in traffic, he has darting sped and the ability to change direction quickly. He needs to develope more at this level but he is now 27 with 3 years experience.

Williams, Demetrius 87 Wide Receiver 6’2" He has good height, decent speed and yes he has been rather a hit and miss, but this will be the first time in the 4 years he has played for the Ravens that he will have a returning starting QB who hopefully will make it through the whole season able to start every game.

Washington, Kelley 15 6’3" good height good speed, always been hidden behind a field of big named WRs. He may finally get his chsnce to show what he can do. He is physical and shoud be a good inside WR with the chance to catch someone sleeping and run the deep play from time to time.

Riley, Eron 13 6’3" also good height, a rookie so he is unknown at this level 4.29 40 yard (so speed no doubt) 40" verticle leap on top of his height will have him being able to reach the ball over the arms of coverage, and he can run after the catch, sophmore and junior year at Duke he averaged 20 yards per catch. This kid could be a sleeper, he is good just maybe at this level and with a team that could have depth to run a balanced offense he could become a star from the word go.

Wheelwright, Ernie 17 6’5" not the greatest speed, or route running(this is something that can change), but good height and would be good as a TE and special use WR

Foster, Jayson 8 Wide Receiver 5’7" is really on the short side and at 175# small but that could be used as to his advantage because he could easily be lost in traffic. Young very athletic played QB in college just another possible wrinkle to be mixed in with Troy Smith, Flacco and any wildcat style play.

Smith, Marcus 81 Wide Receiver 6’1" 215# he is athletic, very physical, good speed for his size, has been one of the more spotlighted players during this offseason. He was a go to guy in college and is ready to shine as a pro. Watch this kid he seems to have a drive and desire that deserves nothing but respect.

Clayton, Mark 89 Wide Receiver 5’10" was recorded as having a 38" leap decent speed at times questionable hands but at the end of the season last year was seeming to become a more reliable target. As it stands now he will be our #1 WR so his number will go up with that being said and hopefully hin and Flacco can develope together.

Ealy, Biren 8 Wide Receiver 6’3" good height, young dumb and stupid off the field with his recent arrest. Maybe he could wise up and mature, but at least he gives us someone else to look at and maybe keep on the practice squad to see what happens.

Smith, Troy 10 QB/ maybe WR 6’0" good speed and ability to run and scramble and is use to being under pressure of being in the spotlight.

Michael Vick, simple if the Ravens sign him, I have been a Ravens fan from day one, even when we were losing, but I will never watch a Ravens game while he is on the team. I would become a Steelers fan before that happens and I truly hate the Steelers…

and good points. Don’t know if I’d go as far as becoming a Steelers fan, but understand your passion,

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Jul 29, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

agree about Vick. i’ll boo the hell out the idiot. he’ll be the only player to get booed after scoring a TD at home.

Eron Riley and his 20 YPC is suspect considering Duke stinks and other teams were frequently playing a soft prevent up by 30 every other game.

DWill is injury prone

and pitt won the SB with Ward, Sweed, and Holmes who made a ton of nice catches.
the runner up had 2 greats. you need balance. I can’t think of many division winners going into camp with 3 of 4 WR positions up for grabs. even the 2000 ravens had Ismail, Sharp, Stokely, Johnson lined up (and greatest D of all time)….and we squeeked in as a wild card team.

Clayton is being elevated by the media to a status he is unfamiliar with. he’s not a #1by NFL standards. he might be one day but we are going off facts as of today. not wishes.

figurs has fumbleitus. he can’t hang onto the ball. will he down the road..maybe. fact please.

wheelright hasn’t done anything except practice.

foster would be a gimmick guy. his size gets away with it in high school and college but with the speed in the NFL he’ll probably get hung up at the line or flattened in the slant. i see him as a returner if he makes the team. RB’s get away with being shorter because their built like rocks. not 170#.
