Never posted on here before, but this is my first mainly because I am kind of lost. Absolute shock and devastating blow to the team. Now the talks of signing a veteran wide receiver are becoming quite intriguing and have made their way back to the forefront of my thoughts for this team….

Looking for a veteran free agent at this point is touh. Isn’t former Indianapolis Colt Marvin Harrison looking a lot better right about now?

I posted over at BTSC

Thinking i now have visions of Harrison or Toomer in Purple and Black….

Any chance at all that you guys make a blockbuster trade for Marshall or Boldin? Using next years 1st round pick?

I hope so

Not on Harrison or Toomer, Mason is better then both those guys right now. Marshall and Boldin would have been nice if we werent so scared of “character” wa wa wa, cry me a river (Not you steeler). Dont do anything in the draft, barely antthing in FA and AHHHH, so frustrating.

I wouldn’t mind if Ozzie shopped around next year’s 32nd pick in the draft.

You just beat me to it!

I just heard on the news that he says “all good things must come to an end.” However, something tells me that Ozzie would have preferred he’d have decided BEFORE the draft, not two weeks before Training Camp! At the same time, it would be fair to believe he just decided and the effect that his buddy Steve McNair’s death had on him might have been part of the decision-making process.

Looking at McNair’s now-fatherless four boys, perhaps Derrick decided he wanted to spend more time with his family, although I’m not too sure what his family is composed of (wife, kids?).

Either way, while I’ll miss his production and will not soon forget his gutty performance playing virtually one-handed against the Cowboys last season, I will koin a legion of both Ravens and Titans fans to wish him the best of luck.

First thing that came to my mind

Was everything that happened with Steve McNair. I think it hit him so hard that he just wanted to be with his kids and wife. He was a warrior, but this just screws up a lot of things right now. I’ll discuss it later, gotta vent.

Not much to choose from. Who do you like? Justin McCarins looks to be the bet of the rest to me. Check it out:

Can't sugarcoat this one

Mason retiring is an absolutely smothering blow.

Derrick probably would’ve declined substantially in 2010, but we’re now left with one of the worst WR corps in the league should Ozzie not bring in a legitimate threat.

Wow...thats insane

Never saw that coming. I would not be surprised if he came back though. Any time I hear a “maybe” I will come back, I feel like its inevitable that they do.

What is the deal with Harrison anyway? Is he really that old that no one will even look at him anymore?

by Johnny_S on Jul 13, 2009 8:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think this is great news
“In my career, I have been able to do everything but win a Super Bowl. " Mason stated.

Mason was entering the final year of his contract and was scheduled to make $3 million. He had been trying to get a long-term deal from the team during the offseason, but a deal never materialized.

I guess he figured that sticking around wasn’t gonna get him a Lombardi, so screw it.

Wrap it up!

To his credit, I wouldn’t be taunting you guys right now if I didn’t think he was a good player. He appeared competent to me, when not injured.

I wonder which decrepit wide-out the ravens will have to settle for now? Man what a time to lose a key receiver like that. I thought you guys were gonna be alright in the department, at least for the early part of the season.

"...when not injured..."?????

I guess you didn’t see his gutsy performance w/ one am against the Cowboys on national TV when he even caught a TD pass, with one arm hanging by his side, after he dislocated it earlier!? Maybe not the fastest by far, or best route runner, or even best hands, but he was arguably the best possession receiver in the NFL last season. Every team knew he was Flacco’s main and even only true target, but he still got open made the key receptions and kept the drives alive.

Barely there? 11-5, two playoff wins on the road with a rookie QB and a loss in the AFC Championship Game that was only decided in the last four minutes? If that’s barely there, then I hope you think we’re “barely” there again!

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Jul 14, 2009 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

settle down

1 I’ll give him props for still producing while injured, but for some reason, ravens wide receivers and corners appear to get banged up more often than others. But good point, even while injured, your retired wide receiver still made plays.

2 What I was trying, and failing apparently, to say was that the ravens were not deep or particularly talented at wide-out in 2008 or early in 2009. In my opinion, you guys were gonna be decent in that area of the team as long as there were no major injuries, which isn’t likely. Now, the ravens are totally screwed. You guys are gonna have to bite some kind of bullet, either through a trade or veteran pickup.

Man I don’t blame you guys for being pissed off though. If it makes you feel any better, the Steelers starting center just broke his toe. That tempers the mood a little.

The Steelers board is probably the most civil, and the respectful Steelers fans are treated kindly. Dawgs By Nature is a mixture of both the good and the bad, but the culture is being taken over by standup guys like Rufio and Chris. BaltimoreBeatdown is just a joke, as it’s moderator advocates trolling on a partner site.

Minus the Harrison/Reed DPOY argument we had. Over there the guys just tried to tell me how shitty of a city Pittsburgh is. Then once they lost that argument all the guy could do is argue grammar.

Like I said, it’s a mixture of both over there. The 7-10 guys that post 80% of the material on Dawgs by Nature would be civil to any football fan… provided you don’t produce and avalanche of “you’ll always lose b/c you’re the Browns” bs.

Once in a decade

is called an “aberration” or a freak occurrence. The rest of the time, it is called the “norm.” The Browns losing record most years is the “norm.” The Ravens are stacked on defense and will be fine enough on offense. Last year we did it w/ a ROOKIE QB. This year he has the entire off season to continue his growth. Something tells me he’ll get the ball to whatever receiver lines up outside of him.

Too bad your team has such a poor outlook that you have to try to take us down from the great season we had and expect to have in 2009 as well, regardless of Derrick Mason’s status.

The fact is that in the last 4 years, you’ve had losing seasons in half of them. The fact is that throughout those years (and the irrelevant ones from half a decade ago) your success was wholly due to a dominating defense. The fact is that defense lost it’s coordinator and starting ILB and got a year older. The fact is you’ve got a second year “game manager” QB with absolutely no weapons around him. The Ravens are a lot like the Bears, they go “all in” on defense, and when the chips fall right they have a great season. When the don’t, they’re abyssmal. In both scenarios they’re not title contenders.

The Browns were possibly the worst franchise in the NFL pre-Savage, that I can’t argue with. Phil did a complete overhaul, and there is undoubtedly tons of talent on this team that was never there in the Davis/Palmer days (Thomas, Steinbach, Quinn, Edwards, Rogers, Wright, Jackson, Cribbs).

Those were the Billick days

This a totally different team with new faces everywhere. Billick had no positive consistency. We know what we can do and what we can’t do. I agree that our WR is not looking very good right now. But we will have a top 5 rushing attack and a top 5 defense. That will be enough to get us where we need to go.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 14, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Top 5 rushing is possible again, though without any outside weapons it will be a challenge. I admit I was shocked to see you at 4 last year.

So were we.

We had high hopes for Willis and most still do, but we did not expect a 6’0", 260 pound full back to be as productive as he was.

With LeRon moving back to FB, it will allow for Willis to shine and Ray Rice is considered to be one of the most hyped up players to have a breakout season this year.

I’m right there with you though that it is going to be challenging to overcome the WR things. But there is no possible way that the Front Office lets this situation play out the way it already has. We will bring someone in and HOPEFULLY that will take some pressure off of the run. Probably no though, lol.

Shows how good our o-line has been

Everyone knows what’s coming but they still couldn’t stop our three headed attack last year and with an even better o-line this season, it will be more of the same.

Unfortunately it will probably be more of the same in Cleveland as well. Who’s the next coach coming there?

We’re optimistic about Mangini, who without a 6 game stink fest by Farve would have made the playoffs in two of his three years as a HC (in the Belicheat division, no less). No matter what, he and his staff is a certain upgrade over Crennel, one of the worst tacticians in league history. We’re also very excited about Rob Ryan, who promises to finally bring in an attacking style Defense.

The player acquisition only has to remain consistent, which I hope it will with Kokinis (a virtual Savage clone without the PR deficiencies). For the past 4 years we’ve been acquiring 3 to 4 average-to-above average players every year (Bentley-Edwards-Pool-Cribbs, Steinbach-Wimbley-Jackson-Vickers, Thomas-Quinn-Wright-McDonald, Rogers-whatshouldhavebeen Corey Williams). If an org does this virtually every year they will be competitive (and we think an influx of Mack-Robiskie-Massaquoi-Veikune-Barton-Coleman-Abrams will continue the trend).

This is not a rebuild. You don’t rebuild when you have Thomas, Rogers, Quinn, Edwards, Steinback, Cribbs, Jackson, Wright etc.

Mason

As a Steeler fan I’m obviously not upset with the news, especially the timing…right before camp.

But, just as with my Steelers, I try not to get too high or too low, I feel the same way about Mason’s retiring. On the surface, sure it looks good for the Steelers, but ultimately you never know.

Great organizations find a way, and I begrudingly will give the Ravens their due, especially with Ozzie. Maybe this will force the Ravens to deal for Bouldin (who btw I pray does not end up with the Ravens b/c that guy is an absolute beaset!!!). So, while Steeler fans maybe rejoicing now…if you all get Bouldin I will be really nervous.

Or maybe this will force the younger WR’s to step up sooner than expected. While this could cause some early “growing” pains, in the long run maybe it’s exactly what those guys need to take their game to the next level.

So, I understand Raven fans frustration but ultimately we don’t know what it means to their success. It might look bleak now but you never know. Did I mention how nervous I am that you all will now land Bouldin??

Ok

What about D.J. Hackett? We should also bring in Tab Perry out of desperation. Any thoughts? D.J. is a good player. Does anyone know the deal with him? We are pretty screwed in my opinion. It’s probably too late to make a move on the “character” dudes, as they will have to learn Cam’s foreign system and carry the receiving corps. It’s a sad day. What Mason did for us last year is too much for words.

I think

The Ravens might get a shot to matt Jones. He is not suspended, play quite well last year for us. I know lately it is not dificult to win the “best Jaguars receiver” title, but he was clearly the best WR of the my team. He made a couple key 1st down plays all year long, oftem from 3rd and long. He might fit in Baltimore.
Just keep him away from drugs and making trouble…

Matt Jones

is a total piece of garbage, and Ozzie will never sign him. He’s a former 1st round pick who never performed like it (we have been through that). Harbaugh would look bad if he preached all this “he’s a Raven” stuff and brought in a criminal. It just doesn’t make sense. He played good in a couple games last year. But if we signed him, it would be like signing Antonio Bryant to a long-term contract for playing good in only 3-4 games last year. (Oops, the Bucs already did that. I wonder if it pays off).

Seeing

who’s left from the free agent WRs he is an option. I’m not say he will end up in Baltimore, but he is one of the better FA WRs who are without a team right now. I totally understand the red flags onhim, he just blew his chance this year with that drug violation. We wil see.

Aye, Carumba!

Part of me wants to believe this is all just a negotiating ploy on Mason’s part, who knows…

But it probably is the real deal. As for the “scrapheap” that Bruce posted above, and I do not know any of these guys health status, etc. but at first glance, I say maybe give Drew Bennett and Ashley Lelie a call; Dante Hall might be intriguing. I wonder if the Ravens would be willing to roll the dice on Matt Jones and/or Koren Robinson -now would be interesting.

I have to think the Ravens have a contingency plan in place as this is no different than if Mason had blown his knee out during OTA’s…

Unless a miracle happens, we are stuck with Clayton and a maybe healthy Demetrius Williams, backed up by some combination of Marcus smith, Kelly Washington and Yamon Figurs… ugh… Maybe Marcus Smith will come out of nowhere and be the “real deal”, maybe Kelly Washington is reborn, maybe monkeys will fly out of my a$$…
