Derrick Mason Retires

According to the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens' leading receiver is retiring after 12 years in the pros.  Coming so soon after his longtime teammate Steve McNair's funeral, I wonder if perhaps McNair's death had a really profound impact on Mason's desire to play.  Either way, the Ravens offense just took a major, major blow.  Looks like its time for Mark Clayton and Demetrius Williams to step it up, or Joe Flacco's sophmore season might not be everything we've been hoping it will be!

The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

You bet me by 7 minutes lol

But on a serious note…what a blow. Really did not see that one coming.

I will admit, Flacco and Mason hit it off last season, and i was not looking forward to the encore

Well played Mason…you may not have played for my favourite teams, but you were also a class act and a great player

Wow, thats a way to turn on ESPN

And have that be the first thing I see.

Great, so glad we did not get Boldin or Marshall. Makes me so god damn HAPPY!!!!!!

Yea they say hindsight's 20/20...

But shouldn’t the Ravens have had an idea that this was coming well before mid-July? And shouldn’t they have acted accordingly, i.e. gotten a star receiver who can make up those recepetions? Boldin or Marshall in a purple uni sounds pretty freakin’ good right now.

by Butterpants on Jul 13, 2009 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ehh

This McNair stuff might have played a huge role in this. All seemed well with Mason coming back strong and ready to go to war again.

Boldin and Marshall would have looked great in purple. But we were afraid and did not pull the trigger. Not only did we not add to our weakness group on the team,(Kelly Washington? Come on), but we just lost our best WR. Clayton at #1, An injured D-Williams at #2, Marcus Smith who has what, one career catch, wash-up Washington, and Yamon Figurs.

Great for Joe’s progress.

Always thought Mason was stand up

but I admit to being disappointed with his handling of this. He couldn’t let the RAVENS know about this before now? Even if it was just a consideration, Ozzie et.al. could have made some other arrangements or been somewhat prepared. Now it’s like he’s leaving them in the lurch.

It's easier to get forgiveness than permission.

It sounds like you’re implying that Mason intentionally sabotaged us.

Mason

did let the Ravens know, he asked for a (well deserved) contract extension months ago, the front office felt otherwise.. No blame on Mason here…

by adh on Jul 13, 2009 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think mason was tired of being the only one. he wasn’t going to last long with everyone and their mother knowing he was going to get the ball every 3rd down. he had no help on the other side. on the other hand, i’d have to agree he stuck it to the team if he didn’t have a recent injury or just didn’t feel good. anyway, loved the guy and now we are a 9-7 team.

by raven on Jul 13, 2009 9:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

officially the worst receiving corp in the AFC North and maybe football. 1 step forward 10 years back. i wish we had patrick johnson, stockley and ismail. they look like HOF’ers at this point. i am so pissed that we didn’t address this obvious need. ozzie is scared to death on paying offensive players. maybe ozzie is a ray guy to…ozzie will always look good on D with ray there but doing anything on O is too risky for his rep. he better go shopping ASAP because Flacco is officially dead in the water.

by raven on Jul 13, 2009 10:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You nailed it.

Took my exact words. Definitely the worst WR group in the AFC at least. To think that Kelly Washington or Yamon Figurs is our 4th WR makes me want to throw up my Keystone Ice.

I bitched, and wined, and moaned about this shit since the season was over, and all everyone told me was to calm down cause Ozzie knows what hes doing. Well what you gonna do now Ozzie. I swear, if we sign Matt Jones after all that bullshit character stuff with Marshall, the front office is officially hipocrats, or however the hell your spell it.

Good job being one of the best front office’s in the league and embarassing me.

I've heard

Matt Jones knows how to handle the rock, can blow by the secondary, and can cut on his route in a perfect straight line. The guy just really has a nose for the ball.

I am praying...

That this opens the door and broadens Ozzie’s mind into doing a deal for a bigtime wideout

by ravsagain on Jul 13, 2009 10:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

mason’s loss, at this point, is probably the biggest loss we’ve ever had on O and maybe D. this is absolutely huge. i seriously think we may be a .500 team now. maybe the loss of priest holmes hurt more BUT lewis was there and holmes potential was unrealized at that point by Billick. not by me. i don’ t believe that someone like Marcus Smith can all of the sudden flip a switch and become an NFL starter. Clayton has had years and still struggled to make an impact.

Just because D.Williams and Smith run around finger tackleing players at the training facility has 0 baring on their game time worth. go into any season with 3 unproven starting receivers and your cooked. i’m sure harbaugh will spin this into motivation but reality is just that. mason was the only feared receiver we had and for good reason. we need a trade this week.

by raven on Jul 13, 2009 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

exactly

Mason is the go to guy.. clayton was our version of a pathetic deep threat and even when he was healthy, D Williams didn’t look like he would ever evolve in to a dominant wide reciever.. i feel like unless we get some major changes, we’re screwed

Not gonna happen ...

…w/o the cap space. We need to sign Suggs, and shortly thereafter Gaither and Grubbs. Where is the cash for a big name wideout who will want a new contract? Can’t have everything, so don’t be expecting a blockbuster.

couldn’t post for some reason on another page but i wrote soo….

mitchell, case, banks and boller all hand selected by billick at the peak of our once in a century D…. because “(we) think we know but we don’t know.” probably the most wasted team in history to have won 1 AFC Championship. gut wrenching and that jackass shoved his play calling and horrific cavanaugh down our throats. i swear billick tried to sabotage every game. he was more in the way than a fat lady with ‘carry on’ finding a seat on a packed flight to vegas.

dilfer is very revealing on NFL films Ravens SB run. dilfer basically went into the games with the proper attitude that he wanted to keep it simple (don’t complicate things like brian did) and let the d win. remember when sharp was hanging on trent after the bad Tenn. pick and said, “your not coming out of this game, i’ll carry you out there.” they loved trent because he “got it”. 12 wins in a row. that is no mistake. he managed the team and they believed in him and not billick. that is why sharp and dilfer were run off. they were a threat to billicks BS. maybe trent was in the right place at the right time but we will never know. he was a warrior on a warrior team but we traded him in for a fragile man with retirement on his mind. who would you follow?

by raven on Jul 13, 2009 10:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes sir

I can never disagree with you. Dilfer got us to the superbowl. QB is the most important position and we dont get there with banks or whoever the other scrub was. That says something about who he was.

I like the “we think we know but we dont” Cause its true. This is not 2000 anymore and you need to be explosive to win in this league.

I would follow dilfer and always have. Still the worst decision ever made by the Ravens. 2nd is not going after Boldin or Marshall.

Hey Beatdown, YOU STILL HAPPY WITH THIS GROUP!

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 13, 2009 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Enough w/ the Dilfer love

We’ll never drop our opposite passions about this move. The worst move in this team’s history? Are you shittin’ me!? Perhaps if we had kept Dilfer and gone 6-10 the next year instead of making the playoffs w/ Grbac you would hve forgotten all about Trent by now and he would have faded into serious obscurity and not keep popping his always smiling blank stare on the networks.

I’m also not panicking like you over-reactors here on The Beatdown (raven, MaLoR). You guys need to chill and leave it to Ozzie to make a move, if any, before camp. Not saying Flacco is any Tom Brady or even Donovan McNabb, but our defense is better than either teams and both QB I just mentioned didn’t have anywhere near significantly better receiving corps when they went to the Super Bowl (other than Brady’s last tip there w/ Moss and Welker). So remember what you’re saying here and prepare to eat crow when we succeed regardless of whom is on the receiving ends of Flacco’s rockets!

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Jul 14, 2009 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good point about Brady’s first two SB WR groups, but I dont know about McNabb – he had this guy named Owens who happened to be at the very top of his game when the Eagles most recently went to the Superbowl.

A better example might be Rex Grossmann and the Bears. Pretty sure Flacco is head and shoulders above Grossmann, but I cant remember who any of their recievers were that year. Put that together with dominating defense and maybe we could pull off a pretty successful season, especially since our QB is much better than theirs was despite the common lack of recievers.

They say the empty can rattles the most...

by Massacre on Jul 14, 2009 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bernard Berrian and Mushin Mahammed, if I remember correctly

And obviously Devin Hester. That was actually a pretty good receiving core with a shitty QB. Unibrow is definitely better than Sexy Rexy.

I have to agree with Bruce here and disagree with Malor. You do not need an explosive offense to win the SB. Besides the Colts and the maybe, maybe Giants when the last team an explosive offense won it all? Last time I checked the term was “Defense wins championships,” not WR win championships (ask TO and Moss about their rings).

by Johnny_S on Jul 14, 2009 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Defense may win championships and truly explosive offenses may not win it all but a good offense is still needed. Last years Steelers needed the offense to drive down the field last year and that entire drive fell on the WR’s. A great defense is good but your offense needs to be more then one dimensional.

by archon095 on Jul 14, 2009 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If by "fell on the WR's" you mean

fell on Ben, then yes you are correct. And our offense was the definition of one dimensional last year. I think our rush offense was ranked 23rd in the league, if I remember correctly, and did not exist in the playoffs last year. Our offense was good, not great. With your depth and quality at tailback your offense is good, not great.

Touche

I guess Rex did have pretty good WRs. Muhammed was the real deal for sure.

They say the empty can rattles the most...

by Massacre on Jul 14, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually no he wasn't

at that point, he was not the same guy that paired w/ Steve Smith in Carolina after he blew out his ankle. Berrian was strictly a “go long and I’ll throw it as far as I can” guy and Muhammed was an okay receiver. Hester was a great returner but not ever a great receiver.

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Jul 14, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Berrian still had 775yds on 51 recs and 6TDs
Mahammad had 60 recs for 863yds and 5 TDs
Devin Hester apparently did no line up at WR that year (oops)
oh and I forgot they had Desmond Clark 45rec 626yds 6 TDs (all career highs)

Those are some damn good stats with Rex Grossman behind center. I would say they were a good receiving core behind a shitty QB.

Shut down our run game

And we are finished. If we keep the group of WR we have now, we are going to have to rely on our running game getting 175+ yards every game.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 14, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not so!

Our passing game is already better with another year of experience, a better o-line and a more prepared Flacco. Regardless of whom he’s throwing to, he’ll get it doen. Gotta have faith and understand the WR position is relatively over-rated compared to others.

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Jul 14, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We do not over-rate anyone right now

Just knowing that there is a very good possibility that Yamon Figurs could be our 4th or even 3rd WR at one point next season makes me sick.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 14, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, but

I need a Superbowl. I don’t need another 10-6 season and out in the playoffs. We get a WR that we can rely on and wants the ball, we win it all next year.

Ozzie will make a move. Probably calls Jimmy Smith and asks him to come out of retirement.

“O improved over last year”…No way. 1/2 of McClaine was that he was a surprise. Flacco didn’t exactly improve but did get better with the play book. Physically this is the year he should improve. Willis started last year healthy but ended it beat up. Mason is gone and I don’t think he’s playing games after losing his good friend McNaire..kind of takes the steam out of BS. Oher is a rookie. Superman but a ROOKIE. Rookies get schooled early and often. Rice is my best hope to catch teams off guard with out poor receiver corps. “Receivers are overrated” lol. Yeah right. Either you have Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders or great receivers. We have neither.

Our O-line still needs to gel. They are not a verteran bunch who has worked together for years. I am hopeful and love my team but Troy P. and the Steelers must be rolling in slop over our receiving corp. Can you just see the eyes of our receivers when they head into Heinz Field. Moon pies.

by raven on Jul 14, 2009 6:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

How can you say that!?

Flacco’s stats, especially TD/INT ratio, vastly improved over the last half of the season. McCalin was asurprise but consistent all season. McGahee might have dropped off, but rebounded in the Dolphins and Cowboys games and we didn’t lose a step in our overall run game. Oher might be a rookie but he will be an upgrade over Anderson/Terry. Another year equals improvement, plus another year of Cam’s system.

I won’t/ and I’m not dogging Flacco because we are very lucky to have him. He is special all around and it is exciting to see if he will be the premiere QB in the AFC North for the next 10 years. My biggest fear is that he tries to do way too much to make up for the receivers and gets buried. He could get into to some bad habits if he continues to roll right only to look up and see his corp smothered. We will be an obvious run team on tough downs. That will not get us by stiff D’s. I will be fine with our O if we make a conserted effort to get Rice the ball in the passing game. I think he could be a Westbrook, Sproles or Morris from the old Giants. I beleive if he gets the ball on the corner in the Pitt. games we win. that never happened.

by raven on Jul 16, 2009 11:46 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You're probably right

and most likely no one other than Troy makes that play. He made an even better sideline throw at the end of the first half of the Dolphins playoff game that caused my jaw to drop and the stadium silenced! He progressed a ton from earlier in the year and that is part of the reason we beat the Titans at the end of the season but lost to them earlier.
