Final Roster

Who do you think will be the 53 men to pass the last cut???

My opinion:

OFFENSE (24)

QB (3)

J Flacco, T Smith, J Beck

RB (4)

W McGahee, L McLain, R Rice, C Peerman

TE (3)

T Heap, LJ Smith, Q Sypniewski

WR (5)

D Mason, M Clayton, D Williams, M Smith, J Harper/E Riley/someone of the 4 WR brought for camp

OL (9)

J Gaither, B Grubbs, M Birk, M Yanda, M Oher, C Chester, A Terry, O Cousin, D Hale

DEFENSE (26)

DT (4)

H Ngata, K Gregg, J Bannan, B McKinney

DE (3)

T Pryce, P Kruger, D Edwards

ILB (5)

R Lewis, T Gooden, J Phillips, P Burgess, B Ayanbadejo

OLB (4)

T Suggs, J Johnson, J McLain, A Barnes

CB (6)

D Foxworth, F Washington, S Rolle, L Webb, C Carr, D Martin

S (4)

E Reed, D Landry, T Zbikowski, H Nakamura

SPECIAL TEAMS (3)

M Katula (LS)

S Koch (P)

G Gano (K)

PRACTICE SQUAD:

D Drew (TE)

B Mattison (DE)

E Weelwrigth (WR)

E Riley (WR)

S Haushka (K)

E Jones (TE)

D Willy (QB)

J Cook (FB)

I think Willie Anderson and Frank Walker will be cut after camp (4.5 million cap)...

Also I think we will not carry a FB on active roster, but J Cook will be around if one of our starting TE goes down.

D Drew will take LJ Smith after this year (Smith has only a 1 year contract). He is the same type of player. A passing TE.

Definitive I see Figurs out of the team. I think with Carr, Webb, and any other WR he makes no sense for us.

What do you think?

The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

Pretty good projections

There will probably be a surprise or two in there before then however. One of the invited receivers could make a splash, and of course, we’re crossing our fingers, injury-wise. However, you pretty much nailed it unless I’m missing something.

It’s good to see that while we have a lot of veterans on this team, we have a bunch of youth that contributes, yet our roster was pretty much set even before the draft. Sounds like a Super Bowl run is in the future.

I'm probably in the minority here

But I would like to keep Walker this year if we can afford to do so. CB depth has always been a problem for us, and it is now a strength. I would love to go into this season with five game tested corners (Fab, Fox, Rolle, Carr, Walker) and a few high upside young guys (Webb, Martin). Not sure if we can keep seven guys though, so it may come down to Walker or Martin, as everyone else is safe. If Rolle and Carr or Washington get hurt, we are going to wish we had Frank. As I always say, he is not a good starting corner in the NFL, but is a great 4th or 5th option at the position. He is physical and brings swagger, not to mention he spit in a Steeler’s mouth. Normally, I wouldn’t be cool with that, but it was a Steeler, so anything goes.

Frank Walker and Yamon Figurs.

Walker should definitely make the final roster. Many people were picking on him last season, but as you said, he can provide excellent depth at CB. I would also contend that Yamon Figurs should make the roster as well. His role as a returner has serious competition, but he is still very fast and makes a good fourth WR. Justin Harper has done nothing to prove that he can beat out Figurs on the roster.

Figurs and Harper will flip flop

on the active and practice rosters, depending on need. If al the other WR’s are healthy, Harper is odd man out. Figurs at least offers other options such as returning kicks, although I’d much prefer to see any of the other guys do it as I’ve lost all faith in Figurs and probably wouldn’t care if he was cut.

Damn

Maybe he should go see Dr. Jermaine Lewis. Give him 2 doses of touchdowns against the Jets

lol

Figurs hurt my heart. He run like he’s scared to get hit and like he cant see where the lanes are. I can remember a few games where if he would have went left instead of straight(like he always do) he could have broke one. Anybody knows the last time Figurs got into the endzone?

by dredz on May 15, 2009 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Against the Texans last season

Caught a 40 yard bomb from Flacco, right on the money. Figurs stuck with it, made the catch, secured it and took a big hit while falling into the endzone. His only catch of the year.

Yea, Harper out of here

No way he gets the 5th spot over Figurs who has still barely done anything as a WR. And Walker is a very good defensive back, just not a good starting corner, which he did many times last year. He plays aggressive, and sticks with his man. I would like to have him in the nickel and dime sets.

Cap

Willie Anderson frees 2.9 mil, Walker 2, and if we reach a long term with Suggs, we will be 6 or 7 mil under the cap… If D Martin play well (like in last preseason), he can beat Walker for a lot less money).

Also I agree J Harper will figth for the 5 WR spot. Maybe one of the 4 Wr will beat him, or Weelwrigth.

For the Most part, You got it.

I think Ayanbadejo and B McKinney (that is not Bill McKinney the actor from “Deliverance”, is it?) do not make it and instead Walker for the reasons stated above and another OL.

Your kickers may be reversed; I think Webb and Drew are reversed unless Webb is lights out during camp; and I will hold (potentially) out the possibility that Figurs has a resurgence and beats out my tenth OL, Webb or Drew.

I think you nailed it for the most part and the last position will come down to either a tenth OL, Figurs, Webb or Drew. I think Drew may be the odd man out because he is most likely to remain stashed on the taxi squad without fear of somebody else snatching him up.

Of course folks above mentioned injuries which may make some of these decisions easier and also once camp starts, the coaches may realize that one or two of the draft picks/UFA’s have no business being on an NFL field (happens every year to all teams).

Harper out

Wheelright, Figurs, or maybe even Riley in at the 5th spot. I am really excited to see what Riley does.

Walker over Martin for sure. We also resigned Evan Ogelsby, but I am not sure what we do with him. He did see some time last year.

It's looking more

and more like Neal won’t be signed any time soon, but I would be surprised if Cook gets the nod over him, if someone were to go down.

It’s funny how all of these debates are over 4th/5th string or injury fill-ins. Says a lot about the core of the team when that is all we have left to talk about. No doubt the most solid it has been since I can remember…

Probably got nervous

and took first offer, especialy the NFL minimum for a long term vet is pretty decent. That, and he gets back to the left coast.

It's just a shame

that the Ravens did not bring him back, especially if he was that desperate to sign. Solid player, veteran leader, and it sure seems like wherever he goes the running yards pile up quick..

by adh on May 9, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I definitely agree with your assessment of the player; however, I think that we’re moving away from offensive sets using a full back. As much as I’m looking forward to seeing how that plays out, I’m also going to miss the offense with extra linemen, Neal, and McClain. Also, there’s nothing preventing Cam from lining Ray Rice up behind McClain.

Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.

Kicker ....

Looks pretty good to me. Would the take up a practice squad spot with a kicker?
I’m not sure they would.

by Irish1 on May 8, 2009 4:18 PM EDT reply actions

Ganon the Practice Squad

would be gobbled up by someone real quick (Cleveland?).

Trust me, our Practice Squad List is on Cleveland’s “Favorite” List on their PC.

Just edited the post

The 5th WR is an open competition.

On CB, I still think Martin will beat Walker, because I hear last year that coaches like him a lot, he play really good on preseason, and he will cost us 1.5 million less than Walker…

by JORGE NITALES on May 8, 2009 4:33 PM EDT reply actions

Good job

I think the 5th WR is definitely up for grabs. I am pretty sure the coaches are really high on Marcus Smith, cause he saw considerable playing time down the stretch last year and even had some balls thrown to him in the AFC Championship game.

There is talks that Jerry Porter is the front runner right now. I am all for that. He is a veteran and had some solid catches for Oakland a few years back. He would bring veteran leadership to the WR group.

Also would love to see what Wheelwright and Riley can do. Wheelwright is huge and Riley is a physical freak.

If Walker gets cut, so be it. I think he is a solid guy to have at the 4th or 5th CB spot, but we now have better guys for those roles. I have always liked Martin. Which ever one wins, I am alright with.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on May 8, 2009 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

Cap hit is reason enough.

Martin had a good year in 07 (40 tackles 2 INT), slightly better than Walker’s 08 season IMO. Walker had more PD, but I think you can attribute that to QB’s picking on him as he was weak in coverage. Also, it seemed like Walker was always getting flagged, pass interference, personal fouls etc.. I just don’t recall Martin making knucklehead plays.
