Introducing Your 2014 Baltimore Ravens
Without including the draft picks and free agent signings over the next five years, here is a comparison of what I think the Baltimore Ravens starting lineup will look like in 2014, compared to 2009. This should spur some decent debate, so I'll throw out my picks and you tear me down in your comments. However, bring it with backup, not just reason-less disagreement!
Position 2009 2014
OFFENSE:
QB Joe Flacco Flacco
RB Willis McGahee Rice
FB LeRon McClain McClain
TE Todd Heap Davon Drew
WR Derrick Mason Marcus Smith
WR Mark Clayton Clayton
RT Willie Anderson Michael Oher
RG Marshall Yanda Yanda
C Matt Birk Chris Chester
LG Ben Grubbs Grubbs
LT Jared Gaither Gaither
DEFENSE:
DL Trevor Pryce Paul Kruger
DL Haloti Ngata Ngata
DL Kelly Gregg Brandon McKinney
LB Ray Lewis Jason Phillips
LB Terrell Suggs Suggs
LB Jarret Johnson Jameel McClain
LB Tavares Gooden Gooden
CB Fabian Washington Washington
CB Domonique Foxworth Foxworth
S Ed Reed Haruki Nakamura
S Dawan Landry Landry
P Sam Koch Koch
K Graham Gano Gano
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know there's no way this is anything like what it will end up five years from now, but the foundation continues to be laid down by Harbaugh, Newsome and Bisciotti. Looks like the defense will still be in the league's top ten even without Ray, although perhaps not the top one or two, but who knows? The offense should be clicking under the veteran Flacco by then. However, it looks like we may still be without that one big name wide receiver unless one of these guys earns that title over the next few years or so.
So just trying to have fun, and take up some space. Let me know your comments and remember, this is without gaining or losing any free agents and forgetting about the studs that Ozzie and his team will draft us in the near future.

I laughed at Davon Drew
He sure is the future………..
That O-Line is going to be nasty in 5 years.
Gano for President.
And if anyone has not seen the Paul Kruger story yet, here it is

Mark my words...
They will be heralded as the NFL’s best offensive line in the very near future.

Interesting idea, Rexx.
I don’t think that every player that we drafted this year (and some last) is destined to start or take over for our current leaders. I don’t really see Phillips taking over for Lewis, but I haven’t seen him play yet. Anything is possible. I guess it all depends on how well Gooden fills in for Scott. Personally, I think that he’s going to be much better than Scott… Maybe not right away, but half way through the season, I think that Gooden will be kicking butt.
Like I have already said, I have high hopes for ’Ruki. I like that you put him succeeding Reed.

Phillips is a beast of a tackler
in the same mold as Ray- not big physically, not fast, but always around the ball. He is more of a MLB than Gooden. The only other possible MLB on the roster is McClain. Perhaps the future has Suggs on the DL in a 4-3. That would have Suggs and Kruger at the ends, with Ngata and either Dwan Edwards or Brandon McKinney inside. The LB’s would be Phillips, McClain and Gooden, with Fabian and Domonique at CB and two of Landry, Haruki or Zibby at safety. I can live w/ that, knowing the draft and free agency will only improve that lineup.

Prescott is going to be the main competition with T-Good
Even though Gooden is the #1 guy right now, I think a healthy Burgess could give Gooden a run for his money. Burgess will be a big special teamer.

hey now
phillips may not be big, but you cant say he isnt fast at all. TCU had that fastest overall defense in the country last year, no joke. im not trying to bring controversy, just giving a heads up. but overall im glad we grabbed him, although it would have been way tight if we had grabbed maualuga

The beast from Oklahoma
Who will be coming out next year. Granted, we will probably have to trade up to get him, but the man is a beast. I liked him more then Pettigrew prior to the draft.
Wishful thinking on my part.

I actually saw
A mock draft for 2010 earlier today that had us taking Gresham with the 20th pick. I would love to get him, BUT RATHER TAKE HIM AT 32!!!!

Suggs won't be there.
Assuming the CBA gets done and we have a cap he will be the next big cap casualty. It’s telling that Ozzie says all the right things but yet there is no long term deal yet. Even though a deal would help our cap now instead of taking the cap hit for his franchise tag number. Suggs thinks he is worth more then he is and Ozzie holds to his right player right price mantra. The reality is that the tweener position of a light, quick college defensive end that we convert to rush OLB is much easier to find than some of the other key positions we need to get deals done for in the next year or two. (Ngata etc.) I’d love to keep him but when I read the tea leaves I think he’s going to be odd man out long term. This will be his last season or he will hit the open market like Ray and return at Ozzie’s price.
by Monkey C on May 6, 2009 12:14 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Can't agree
With Ray on his last legs (2-3 years max), Ngata and suggs will be mainstays and the highest paid at their positions in the NFL, along w/ Reed for a year or three beyond Ray.

I will bet you a deal is done with Suggs before training camp.
Ozzie WILL NOT let someone like him hit the market. No freaking way.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
by Mr MaLoR on May 6, 2009 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe.
I think that it will be next year. The Ravens still have “dead money” from previous contracts. They will have much more cap space next season. I think that Ozzie just wants to get through this offseason retaining as many players as possible. This is a tight season in reference to cap-space. Next year will be better.
by BAL_Hawk on May 6, 2009 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
McNair's and Ogden's
Contracts both expired this year. That frees up some room. And there is a very good chance the league does not see a cap next year, which will allow us to make a very good offer. Suggs has already said he wants to be a Raven for life, loves it here and would take less money to stay here then to sign with fucking Oakland or Detroit for 6 billion dollars.
And with Ngata, that man just wants to hit people, and do it in purple. I do not see Ngata getting more money then Hayne$worth, Rodgers, Jenkins or any of those guys got, but I see him getting paid, that’s for sure.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
by Mr MaLoR on May 6, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I thought that we were still paying McNair and Ogden.
It turns out that you are right. McAlister and Rolle are the only players that we are currently paying dead money for. We saved $8 million by cutting McAlister… but $3 million still counts against the cap. Even though we released Rolle, we are still paying $2.2 million of his old contract, and it counts against the cap. We had a net savings of $4 million by releasing Rolle.
I also think that we should resign Ngata before this season. He’s going to have a monster, pro-bowl season, and then we will need to pay him Haynesworth money.
by BAL_Hawk on May 6, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No way Ngata gets 100 mil
I see him getting a 6 year deal worth about 55-70 million

If the two sides were close
The deal would already be done. Suggs is seeing $$$ signs in a possible uncapped year where he will be one of the few FA’s that have the six years of service to be a UFA. He is keeping his demands too high to get a deal done now in the hopes of a huge payday. We’ll see.
by Monkey C on May 6, 2009 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
They won't let Suggs go.
Ozzie lets guys walk. It’s true, but he has a way of keeping the star players on the roster. Lewis, Reed and Ogden never went anywhere. They were vital pieces that Ozzie went out of his way to retain. Suggs is MUCH too important to our defense. He’s not going anywhere.
by BAL_Hawk on May 6, 2009 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes
You can replace inside linebackers (besides Ray) like we have in the past. You can replace corners and WR and most interior lineman.
But when you have one of the best pass rushers in the NFL, you cannot replace that. I know we are big on Kruger, McClaine, yadda yadda yadda, but the fact of the matter is that none of them is like Suggs and could step up right away and make an impact like him.
Is getting rid of a player like Suggs going to help us bring down Ruffleshamsanwichwithmayo (Big Ben) any easier? Hell no.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Just trying to
lay out what may happen. If he has big sack numbers this year his demand will be way up and be harder to keep him. If his numbers are low maybe his demand will be less.

Did you see Jamie Dukes on NFL network.
Predicting who is in and out of this years playoffs he said the Ravens are out and the Begals are in. What an idiot. Woodson also said the Ravens will not make the playoffs this year.
by Monkey C on May 6, 2009 12:39 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Bengals?
Thats all I need to say.
They think we wont make the playoffs because we lost Bart Scott and our BACK UP Strong Safety.
Dukes is a former no name player and wants to get as much attention as possible. Woodson will always be a Steeler at heart, even though we gave him his only ring.
They can go ahead and not pick us in the playoffs. But picking the Bengals? Wow…..

Dukes
Is the worst, most unprofessional, so called analyst I ever seen. His interviews with Ray were just terrible. I don’t think we should even mention his name on this site, to do so gives him more credibility then he’s worth.
by DT711 on May 6, 2009 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree.
I was just thinking that while I was watching total access this morning. His analysis is always so mainstream. He just repeats what he hears everyone else saying. Dukes is the most unintelligent and uninspired analyst on the planet.
Here’s his “analysis” of the Dolphin’s draft that I heard this morning…
“You look at Vontae Davis. Here’s a situation were you’ve got a guy who apparently has a little baggage with him. He’s a good football player. He slides. He was rated by many as the top corner. So, what happens? If your worrying about a cancerous kind of guy, he’s not going to come into that franchise under Bill Parcells and be a cancer.”
ummm… He’s basically regurgitating everything that everyone else has already said. Why are we listening to him?
by BAL_Hawk on May 6, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly
Remember during that interview he had with Ray at the pro bowl?
I can recall him saying “Personally, I do not think you should resign with the Ravens. A team like Dallas or New York Jets could really use you.”
Then he said “If the Ravens do not resign this guy, they will be a terrible team.”
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Can’t see any other way how he got and holds onto that job. It’s a great gig. I’m sure millions would kill for that job but they give it to this terd. Sigh

Once I saw he picked the Bengals to get in
I thought his omission of the Ravens was safe.
However, the Bengals issue is very simiar to the Ravens. The Bengals were decent before last season’s meltdown due to a ton of injuries (sound familiar?). So, there is always the possibility that the health is improved and they DID have an outstanding draft, so…..perhaps us and them make the post season and the Steelers don’t!

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Ray Lewis will live forever and he will ALWAYS be our MLB! How dare you!
ok, back to earth. Jameel Mcclain scares me as a starting LB in the future. I dont see that happening because he always seemed to me best suited as a backup. And what about the kid Antwan Barnes? He’s a moody kid that plays with alot of passion. I hope he’s still with the Ravens by 2014 because as a LB, he can really move.
And an interesting though, i think by 2014 Ladarrius takes over for Dominique. Dom can be our new Samari Rolle but he probably wont start because he’s hit his peek. Ladarrius is gonna be Baller! Mark my Word!
Oh yea, one more thing: . . . . . . . . . . . AHHHHHHHHHH! Marcus Smith as our #1 reciever? You were better off putting D-Will in that spot! Please, Dont ever call him the future #1! LOL

The Center
I think will be somebody else besides Chester -possibly somebody we draft next year.
I also agree that Suggs will not be here in 2014 either because he will be, at that point, on the downside of his career and not worth whatever contract he previously signed or, as many suggest will hit the bricks for the big payday after this season. I still think he might end up in Arizona for the 2010 season.
I actually think Reed will still have his hold on the Safety position here in Baltimore in 2014. It may be is “Farewell” year, but I think he will still be here. Many Safety’s have lasted many years: Lott , Woodson, et al. heck, even Neon Deion played DB for a llllooonnngggg time…
And I am willing to bet our receiving core will not consist of Drew, Clayton and Smith; probably at least two names of those three we do not yet know (of).
You forgot Long snapper… :P

I didn't pick guys not currently on our roster
which is why I threw Chester in at center. I also think Ed will still be roaming the secondary in 2014 but thought a little ahead of that for some reason.
