Ravens to Move in a Different Direction with Stover
According to the Baltimore Examiner, Matt Stover is no longer in the Ravens' plans for next season. It has been a great career for Matt and he is the only remaining player to make the move from Cleveland to our city, Baltimore.
Matt is the 3rd most accurate kicker of all time, the MOST accurate kicker of all time on grass fields as well as the Ravens all time leading scorer. He has also only missed 3 extra points his whole career.
Sad to see such a great person and great player like Matt leave our team, as we would not be the type of organization that we are today without his good ol' reliable right leg.
Thank you Matt for all the pressure kicks you have made that have led to some very much needed victories. You will always be remembered as one of the greatest Ravens of all time. We will never forget you infamous point to the sky after a kick.
The only weird part is that it has been reported that the Jets were interested in bringing the 41 year old in? But they just resigned kicker Jay Feely, so retirement is most likely the answer
So where does this leave us now? Do we resign the kid, Steve Hauschka, who is currently one of our free agents? Or do we look else where?
Well, it will be hard to replace a player and person like Matt was for this team.

He could even make it through those uprights he's holding up!
He was very accurate and his distance was there a few years ago, but in this league now, you need to be able to hit it from 50 yards, and put it at least inside the 10 on kickoffs, neither of which he could do the past tow seasons.
I wanted them to sign the former Jet, Mike Nugent, but he signed w/ the Bucs. Stover will sit and wait for that call when some stupid kicker ends up celebrating a FG and pulls a muscle or tries to make a flailing tackle on Special Teams and breaks something. Matt will end up getting a chance this year, but where will depend. However, he won’t get a starting gig anytime soon.
Hauschka can’t be our full time kicker, as high school starts in late August and he can’t travel with the team w/o Mom’s permission.
Did love Stover’s nickname though – Matt “It’s Not Over ‘til It’s” Stover!

sad day indeed..he maintained a high level of play to the end..not many can say that. i wish we could have given him a massive retirement ovation or something for all he did. he’s up there with the B-more greats of all time. we were damn lucky.

I’m not a big Cam fan..yet..this year will tell. i don’t like how we kept forcing an injured McGahee out there and Rice sat. I was satisfied with them trying to stretch the field more. but, the verdicts still out for the most part. this year will tell a ton about our direction.

…He needs to redeem himself for that… BIGTIME. Honestly, I’ve lost all confidence in the man.

Welcome to the Beatdown
Where ball busting takes front stage, on the Ravens and anyone who is bold enough to post.
Consider yourself initiated. Now all you have to do is redeem yourself, of course. BIG TIME!

The last original Raven.
Matt Stover has always been one of my favorite Ravens. As a Christian man, I look up to him. I was always inspired that, whether he made a FG or missed it, he always pointed up to heaven after each try. It reminded me that, even when life is tough, we always need to be thankful for our abilities and life itself.
Thank you, Stover. You will be missed. I know that you will have success wherever you go or whatever you do!

I always thought he was pointing to the big man in the sky: Lando Calrisian.

Matt Stover
is a class act. Its going to be hard not expecting him every forth down in field goal range. Pretty cool that he played the last game in the stadium he used to sell programs as a kid at (Cowboys). I doubt that Matt is done with football, I could see him continue working with the Players Union. Like someone already said, its always tough seeing guys go in the off season. Great player…but even better person…

Not my man stover
he should be able to stay with all hes given to the orginization
ray lewis stayed why cant he

Cause Stover is 41
And cant make a field goal over 48 yards. I will still take him over anyone from 40 in, but getting a few 50+ yard field goals against some of the defenses we face is crucial. Stover just cant do it anymore from that far. Gotta let go someday.

Because it is just impossible to move the ball on the vaunted Browns defense.

Lol
I like that. 7th grade algebra is easier to figure out then the Browns defense.

well ~
yes he is 41 your right
well at least we should ask him if he would stay for jus a lil less money and well keep him for shot field goal situations or if it gets to crunch time like the titans game
the way they handled it was un called for to me
they didnt really discuss the situation with him

Can't afford the roster spot
Carrying two kickers every Sunday is poor roster management and Ozzie knows that. Tough decision to let the guy go, but something tells me he’ll appear on someone’s roster. Old kickers don’t die, they just sit around and wait for the call, while practicing witheir kids (or grand kids) holding the ball for them while their wives play the long snapper.

That's the nature of the system
And if Stover does play another year with a different team…it doesn’t take away from all that he has done. 41 freaking years old…You know that takes year round dedication. At 28, after six years in the military, I don’t wake up without cracking and popping shit out of joint. I really would love to know how the hell Stover does it. Who was the idiot kicker that wrecked his leg celebrating after an extra point a few seasons back? There is no way Stover’s NFL career is over on or off the field. If he could teach his skills of clutch kicking and maintaining his body…he could be the first ever kicker coach or some shit like that. Okay…its way too early on a drunken Sunday morning…

your right
I found it commendable that he was willing to stay away from the Jets when he received an unofficial offer from them to be respectful of his friend Jay Feely whose a UFA now. It’ll be interesting to see what he decides to do now. Regardless if he retires now or later I am sure he will be inducted into the Ravens Ring of Honor and we will be able to celebrate the man’s legacy in style which I hope happens sooner than later. If he chooses to continue his career, I’ll be rooting for him and wish him the best of luck. The media can nickname Matt Ryan Matty “Ice” but Im sure we all remember who really had ice in their veins during those countless fg’s that had us on the edge our seats.

The ravens had a chance
to grab former Jets and now Tampa Bay kicker Mike Nugent. That guy had a real strong leg and I would have loved to get him but we either waited too long or he wanted too much money. Now it’s either Hauschka or a draft pick.

Tampa
Is letting Nugent and Matt Bryant battle it out this year. The loser could be good competition for young Haushka, no?

I'll take the loser of that competition
over Hauschka any day.
