Underdog Card Always Perfect Card For Steelers

                          95554_feature_medium_medium

The “Underdog Card”, what a fantastic card it is to play. Some misconstrue it as the Bluff Card, for whatever reason, it seems to befuddle me.

The underdog card is used so to speak, to keep the players in check and away from complacency. You want the players to enter each game as if the opponent is a better team than yours.

The bluff card is used in terms, to force other teams to think that you are depleted. When I mean depleted, I mean that your team is so called playing without key players to injury. The message the other team should register into their minds is “Oh, it looks like we have this game in the bag.”

Take the Pittsburgh Penguins for example: In the 2008 Stanley Cup playoffs the Penguins used both cards to attempt to claim the cup. They went into each game of each series with the attitude that the other teams were way better, causing them to play at the highest level they could.

The coaching staff opened up the bluff card in the media expressing that they had several players injured. It was used to try and throw the other teams off balance and play down to a lesser level.

Now you see how people can sometimes misconstrue the two types of cards, “Underdog and Bluff.”

OK, getting back to the underdog card, that's the card that the Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot of familiarity with. It's the card that they are often comfortable using, because they are very successful at playing it.

Boy, the Steelers sure are awesome at playing the underdog card. In fact they win most of their games playing the underdog card.

If you look back at recent history, the Steelers played the “Underdog Card” to push themselves to be the ones at the end of the tunnel playing in Super Bowls XL & XLIII.

Back in 2005 everyone was talking about the Steelers not being able to make it to the Super Bowl. Why? Because they counted on Ben Roethlisberger to have a sophomore slump.

People were saying things like “Quarterbacks usually have sophomore slumps in their second year in the NFL.” Well did Roethlisberger have a sophomore slump? No. He went out there and proved everyone wrong.

Former head coach Bill Cowher used this to the Steelers advantage, to prepare his team to have the set mind frame that they are the underdogs. The Steelers played the “Underdog Card” throughout the 2005 season and it worked. So the they continued the use of the underdog card end-to-end in the post-season, they hit the jackpot with a gracious victory in Super Bowl XL.

Fast-forward to 2008, media members had the preconceived idea that second-year head coach Mike Tomlin could have a sophomore slump. Doesn't this remind you of what was said about Big Ben Roethlisberger? I bet it does. Well, anyways, Mike Tomlin took to account recognizing all of the above poppycock, he used it as an asset and rolled with the punches proving them wrong.

Mike Tomlin saw a use for the underdog card, he used it at will getting all his players on board with that mind frame. So, the Steelers went through the toughest schedule game-by-game playing the “Underdog Card.” It worked. They continued playing that card throughout the post-season, keno the Steelers hit the lottery, bringing home the sixth unprecedented Lombardi Trophy.

Here goes a quote from Mike Tomlin: “That’s been our story all year. We’ve got a team that doesn’t blink in the face of adversity. It’s never going to be pretty or perfect, if you will, but they’ve got a great deal of belief in one another. They’ve got a great deal of resolve, and it was put on display. Our defense gets a lot of recognition for what they’re capable of, and rightfully so, but what you saw from our quarterback and our offense at the end of that football game is what they’ve provided for us all year. When we’ve needed it the most, they’ve done it and done it big. That’s a rerun for us. We did that in Baltimore to win the division. We’re a team and that’s why there’s no division in our locker room, because those guys know that when the chips are down, number seven and company will ante up and kick in. I’m just so happy and proud of them. If I could win any way, it would be like that. All people being involved and having to deliver for us is truly special. As a coach, it’s special.”

I think this quote of Tomlin's well describes the Pittsburgh Steelers using the “Underdog Card.”

OK, now let's get to brass taxes, the Steelers actually play the underdog card for 95% of their games.

If you have noticed, the media hardly ever mentions the Pittsburgh Steelers as a Super Bowl contender at the beginning of the season, if not at all. You usually hear the media mention teams like the Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots, and Dallas Cowboys – being favored to win the Super Bowl.

The Steelers don't mind not being brought up in the Super Bowl ring of latent contenders. Yes, it's okay, they like it that way, flying under the radar playing the “Underdog Card.” The Pittsburgh Steelers are at their best on the gridiron when they play that card.

So, I believe Steeler Nation has embraced the underdog card, I know I have, and Mike Tomlin has likewise. Underdog Card it is, because it's the best card to play.

Just remember, the “Underdog Card” is always the perfect card for the Steelers to play.

So you post this shit over here

Because no one would comment on it over at BTSC.

This is a RAVENS blog, so please take this crap off of here.

What an absolute pile of garbage. Everybody in the Steelers Bandwagon and half of everybody else has their ass cheeks spread wide for Ben Roethlisberger. Don’t even get me started on their number one ranked — and well-publicized — defense. I think you need to go back to the drawing board and figure out what “underdog” means before you spread this bullshit around the Internet. Maybe the hillbillies and white trash that comprise Behind the Steel Curtain eat up this tripe, but sports fans that have more than half a brain could care less about those rare and painful thoughts you get wandering around your head.

Let me leave you with some (apparently) sorely needed wisdom: “It’s better to keep your mouth shut and have everybody think you a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.

WTF do you mean

“You know its true”???

Know what is true? Just because people say that they think Dallas and NE are going to beat you means that you are the underdog. When you have the #1 defense in the whole league, there is no way you are the underdog.

I dont believe in using underdog in this league. Cause any given sunday, anybody can beat anybody. Your argument is weak, just like you are. I still think its funny that you post this shit here because no one likes you over at BTSC, so they wont comment. We have more comments here telling you why you are a dumbass then people over at BTSC has actually discussing the topic.

You guys are missing the point.

The point is that the Steelers like to go in to each game with the mind frame as underdogs, even against you guys the Baltimore Ravens.

Uhh...

The Steelers were favored to win every game in the post season. How the hell does that make you an “underdog”. Oh and remind me what Ben’s QB rating was in Super Bowl XL. Ben did not win the game for you. You won in spite of Ben. :-)

by ryuu on Mar 30, 2009 11:46 PM EDT reply actions

So

You’rre saying if Ben threw for 300 yards and had a 158.3 QB rating in that game and they lost it would still be Ben’s fault. See stats mean nothing if do not win a game. A QB can throw 4000 yards a season and still lose every game.

Can i just say something as a Football fan

Sure im a Steelers fan, but i know how to look both sides and give credit where due etc, i have respect for the other franchises and youll never see me call out anyone or insult other teams blindly

I dont agree with this , i feel that when we bet the Bengals en route to XL, and then the Colts, we were strong favourites because everyone was in a love affair with Indy

We didnt play it this year at all, in fact we were in the top 3 teams for the near majority of the season by most peoples power rankings and opinions, and ended it with postseason victories and a superbowl win, each of which we were expected to win, and we did, although we got a run for our money in the AFCCG and SBXLIII

Every single team and coach uses the mentality of “underdog” in that it motivates the team. Have you ever seen a team get all high and mighty and have a coach say “Yeah we are going to destroy the team on Sunday blah blah”…..No!

Complacency and arrogance backfires (see Anthony Smith v Patriots) and being too cocky in ones ability (See Brady saying theyll score more than 17 vs Giants in XLII

Thats my 2 cents. I hate the Ravens on game day, but i have respect for your team and the way you play ball.

I agree in principle...

…but you have to understand why we’re pissed. Many Steelers fans come over here talking trash about the Steelers beating the Ravens three times on their way to the Superbowl. That’s fine. We can more than handle trash-talking, but to post this garbage over here is a whole new level of arrogance. HOW HOW HOW can you talk about being an underdog while being so arrogant as to post Steeler-worship posts on the blog of their bitter-rival? It’s ludicrous, absurd and insults the intelligence of every Ravens fan that reads this blog.

While I understand your point of view, I do not and refuse to pretend, in any way, that this post isn’t an arrogant piece of crap!

Underdog Mentality?

If you think you’re the underdog, you will be the loser on the scoreboard as well. That junk works great with the main stream media who have to write something everyday, but doesn’t fly here on the blog netowrk, especially on the Beatdown. NFW the Steelers go into games with an underdog mentality. They go on the field thinking "we’re better than them and we will beat their heads in to prove it!’ Any other attempts to make people think otherwise show that you just don’t get it.

I agree with you here as well. We have never gone into a game thinking they are better then us. You do that and you lose. Steelerschatpack is just your typical cock riding football fan who swallows anything the media says.

More trash talk please

i love it because we deserve it after we puckered up on national tv again like little bitches…it will make the turnaround much sweeter. unfortunately, Ben is a flippin general out there and we can’t wrap his fat bumper beaten ass up.

how to beat the steelers:

1. best cb on ward
2. don’t blitz ben, keep him in the pocket and make him pass straight up.
3. run the ball on offense using a larger back like mcclaine
4. screen passes to rice-take troy out of the game/bate him short
5. give up the run take away the pass
6. outscore them by taking deep shots beyond coverage-the middle game is not there.
7. take the playbook away from cam against pitt and sit mcgahee on 1,2 downs unless you plan to pass/draw.
8. find a man to take heaps place

We had a Ben

but Billick ran him out after the Super Bowl…field general who understood the game, had respect from his players and made just enough plays to win. perfect for our D and we spent years and a circus replacing him.

Geez, MaLoR

Surprised at you. See above comments re Dilfer. When Boller was available, I was all over that pick to take him. Came out w/ great number and skills. Yeah, weall know now that he was part of a system and sucked, but at that time, he was highly rated and seemed to be a great pickup. If Flacco had bombed, would you jump off his bandwagon like that?

Rexx

by Rexx on Apr 2, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Jump off in a heart beat.

I admit, I was excited for Kyle "I should have been a " Boller at first. Gotta love a guy who gets on his knees……………………and throws a ball 50+ yards through the up-rights.

But Rexx, IF for some god awful reason Flacco pulls a boller, which he wont of course, wouldnt you hop off the wagon?

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Apr 2, 2009 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but he still made the throws

Even with time, Boller and even Dilfer had trouble making them.

Rexx

by Rexx on Apr 2, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Are you crazy!?

Dilfer was absolutely nothing and had to go. Interesting how he failed everywhere else before and after us. We made the playoffs the next year w/ Grbac and w/o Lewis all season. NFW we make the playoffs w/ Dilfer, as Grbac’s arm was 10 times better. No one could have predicted Elvis would turn into a sniveling, crying baby, but Dilfer was nothing to complain about, much less remember. Trust me, he did win us that Super Bowl. Any QB who’s gameplan has to be “don’t f—- up” is not a keeper.

with that said- billick babied boller and took away his strength- the deep ball. billick’s chicken O actually made Boller tense up and fail..the kid had no chance..just like Redman. victim of jerk off play calling.
