Jason Brown

Steelers fan here.  Where do you guys see Jason Brown on your list of FA priorities, with Suggs, Scott, and Lewis needing new deals?  I haven't heard much of any talk about him, although that could be because he's not as widely known as your LB's.  Any thoughts on how much you guys would pay for him or what the chances are he'll still be in Baltimore next year?  What could you guys see him commanding on the open market?  We'd love to get our hands on some OL.

The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

Us Baltimore fans are keenly aware of Jason Brown's value

to the team. He is one of the top three FA’s on our board. Word is that they will give him a "First Round Tender (?), whatever that specifically is, and he will be paid around $2+ million in 2009 with the idea to get him signed to a long term deal shortly after that. Brown is not going anywhere. Sorry.

Is he an RFA? I thought he was a UFA. If he is unrestricted, he’ll cost you guys a franchise tag ($6-9M) for 2009, and you won’t be able to franchise Suggs or Lewis. If you had to pick two from Lewis, Suggs, and Brown, who would they be?

Jason Brown isnt going any where

Baltimore will get a deal done for sure. 5-6 years and about 15-20 million.

You cant ask us that question....

Because it is not a realistic situation. If you asked us, “If you had to pick 3 from Lewis, Suggs, Scott, Brown” Then I would answer Lewis, Suggs, and Brown.

There is no way Brown is leaving. We dont have another center to take his place that is anywhere close to his skill level. Keep dreaming that you had a line like ours.

You’re talking about 3 Pro Bowl caliber players that are free agents. Suggs is entering his prime and I can’t see him signing for less than what Porter (who was a lot older and riskier) got. I don’t know what Lewis is worth at his age, but to hear you guys talk about him, you’d think a lot. And Brown may not get the national recognition of guys like Faneca, but smart GM’s know that at 25, he’s a more valuable asset than Faneca. If he becomes a free agent, he’s going to get upwards of $50M. If he wants to take $15-20M with you guys, great signing, but he’s worth at least twice that over 5-6 years. As a Steelers fan, I wouldn’t blink giving him a 6-7 year $40-50M deal.

You can always do some cap shenanigans, but it will be pretty tight if you try to sign all three. I’m just asking, if you couldn’t sign all three, which is a plausible situation, which 2 would you pick? Where does Scott come into the picture?

At the tail end of the group

Whether you want to admit it or not, the Ravens are the NFL equivalent of Penn State uses to be known as “Linebacker U.” We have younger guys waiting in the wings, including last year’s 3rd round pick out of Miami, Tavares Gooden, who was IR’d ready to learn from his mentor, Ray. We’d love to get Scott back, but it would have to be at our price, not his. Watch if he goes elsewhere, how he flounders without having Ray to cover him and take the offense’s eyes off of him.

Yeah, teams like the Steelers and Ravens tend to find LB’s in the woodwork who go elsewhere and fade away. You need a high draft pick there from time to time, but finding decent LB’s who can complement the stars in later rounds, or even as UDFA’s isn’t uncommon. If only the Steelers could do that with IOL’s…

See the thing is

We already have a core group of guys who can win the superbowl. That is 100% sure. You have the mindset that every team has to get rid of their good players to go and pick up different players. I dont think my Ravens are thinking like that. We want to sign the men who have already brought success to our team. And if we cant get some of the bigger names from other teams, so be it, because I love the group we have now.

dude

I’m not saying you have to get other players, I’m saying that signing 3 Pro Bowl caliber players is hard with limited cap space.
