Hello from Pride of Detroit

I figured since Brian made his way over to Pride of Detroit to field questions from my readers, I would do the same for the readers of Baltimore Beatdown.  In case you haven't seen POD before, I'm Sean, the lead writer.  We Lions fans are trying to be optimistic about Sunday and the rest of the season, but who are we kidding, it's not going to be pretty on this week, especially with Daunte Culpepper starting at QB.  As you may or may not know, Matthew Stafford took a huge hit at the end of the Cleveland game (Sunday before Thanksgiving) but managed to throw a game-winning TD on the last play.  He struggled big time in the last two games and the coaches wisely decided to give him a week off.

If you have any questions about the Lions feel free to ask.

The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

What's up with Dan Gronkowski?

Had a chance to watch him in person the last 2 years of his college career as a student at Maryland. Will he make any impact for this team? I saw he was just recently signed off the practice squad. Why was that?

He was signed when Brandon Pettigrew went on IR.

He showed potential in the pre-season. And has a following on POD (Pride of Detroit). We’ve been pulling for him to make the roster, not only to see what he can do but he also rounds out the Whole Draft Class of 2009 making a 53 man roster. Which is something we are also happy about, Mayhew and Schwartz look like they know how to Draft.

To this point Will Heller has taken the majority of the snaps at TE in Pettigrews absence, and he has looked pretty good. But I think we all wanna see what we have in Gronkowski, as a TE and possibly on Special Teams.

Don't have much to add to that

Basically Gronkowski is still waiting for a chance to show what he’s got. He looked good in the preseason and was said to have the best hands while the Lions had a case of the dropsies, but right now Heller and FitzSimmons are playing well enough to keep him on the bench.

Supposedly, Gronks is built

like a Mack truck. At the Combine, apparently the ladies that check the players in before they work out went bonkers over him, according to the NFL Network.

Stafford would have been fine playing

as against our weak pass rush, he was in no danger of getting sacked onto the injured shoulder. Do you think Culpepper’s veteran knowledge of the game plus size make him a definite challenge for a pass rush? What is the Lions o-line like? Do you still expect Johnson to get his yards and TD’s regardless of the QB throwing to him?

Thanks!

Culpepper seems to have a poor clock. He doesn’t let plays downfield develop and likes to go to the check down receiver way too quickly.

Our o-line is sort of banged up. We lost our starting RG for the year, and Daniel Loper, who was filling in, has been banged up as well. Most of the time the o-line doesn’t do very well in protection, which is why everybody is so worried about Stafford.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Calvin did better with Culpepper stats-wise just because I could see Culpepper throwing prayers downfield (like the end of the Bengals game). On the other hand, though, like I said, he doesn’t let the downfield routes develop it seems like.

Lions fan

Our O-Line is below-average, and that’s being nice.

You’ll get a wide range of opinions on Jeff Backus, him being the first pick of the Millen era and our starter every single game since. I think he’s okay, he can hold his own most of the time, but will struggle against athletic pass rushers. Our LG spot has been a revolving door. Dominic Raiola has either been under appreciated by fans or overrated by everyone else, depending on whom you ask. He’s a little undersized, but the players and coaches appreciate his leadership on the field, and he’s one of those guys who has a high floor—you know what you’re getting and what he can and can’t do. Our RG, Stephen Peterman, is on the IR, replaced by Manny Ramirez, who’s been a backup for a while. Our Right Tackle, Gosder Cherilus, has been a disappointment this season, considering he was the 17th overall pick in 2008. He just doesn’t seem to employ good technique and makes too many errors. I still have hope for him, he’s a beast at about 320 with long arms and huge hands and I think he’s mean enough, but he just needs to fix a lot of problems with his game.

Overall, I don’t have a lot of confidence in our pass protection, or our run-blocking. Kevin Smith is a running back who does everything pretty well, but nothing excellent. He has good vision for finding holes and is a good weapon as a pass-catcher, but he needs an O-Line that can open holes for him, and we really don’t have that right now. Our O-Line needs to be improved in the coming offseason.

Just look at the 0-16 Lions of last year to see what Calvin Johnson can do irrespective of who he has to work with at QB. He caught passes from five different quarterbacks last year, and still managed to lead the league in touchdown receptions (12, tied with Larry Fitzgerald) and rack up over 1300 yards.

I think with Culpepper you can expect to get more sacks and fewer interceptions than if Stafford was playing. This year, especially in the preseason when he got the most playing time, it seems Culpepper has been playing pretty conservatively. Stafford has a great quick release and has shown a knack for getting rid of the football on time, even if it results more interceptions, it also brings out more big plays. Stafford takes risks. I think Culpepper’s decision-making is slower than Stafford’s, his upside is lower, and that will hurt us given our O-Line.

Throw deep often Lions. You will be surprised what we can give you. TE’s seem to have good days against us. Too bad Gronks might not play. He could get 150 yards or so.

We are down in the dumps over here so you will not hear a boastful word this week.

For your entertainment you migh want to watch a couple of our young rising stars: Webb, Kruger, JJ, Rice, Oher. They might be the reason I go to our last home game. I am digging to find positives on a team where everyone seems to of had a hand in screwing up the season. Mostly veterans.

Culpepper is more of a worry than Stafford. If you can put a cool verteran against our D this year you have a good chance of keeping the game close. With ball control alone you will be within striking distance in the 4th. Go deep my cold weather friends. Thars’ gold in them hills.

gronk— like some of the lions fans have said we all want to see more of him but i don’t see it happening unless we fall behind bad or some how we get a head by a lot lol…

c-pep— he is about as sally as the come you could tell that fat fuck the blitz is coming and he still wouldn’t see it

love ohar but i am vary happy with grew so o well cant have them all..

one your boys was talking about E. Sims on PoD page.. he would not fit your system but he would cost a 2nd..

you think you will trade for a WR or draft one this year to get flaco something more to throw to??

And I see it being 17- 32 something like that CJ getting at least one of the TDs having a ok game

Just Remember matt... what would Daunte do??

I was amused when I followed Sean's Link

that majority of the talk was about Gronk’s, who in my opinion was a steal in the 7th. But Culpepper starting this weekend is basically a safety measure for Stafford. Last time DC started he lead the team to a goose egg in Green Bay.

about Culpepper in a Cincy steakohuse before last week’s game and yelled “racism” accusations at the restaurant for serving others before him. See link in FanPost about Culpepper Starting.

Trade us Calvin Johnson

I guess that isn’t really a question though. But seriously, we offer our fifth round pick, it’s a good deal you want to accept.

Looks like we may see Gronkowski after all

FitzSimmons still has concussion-like symptoms and Gronkowski could be the #2 TE on Sunday.

Hey Detroit fans....

My biggest worry going into the Detroit game was a shoot out between Stafford and Flacco. Can Culpepper still air it out in a similar fashion if Detroit gets behind? Also, mainly cause I am too lazy I guess to do it, but what has been Culpepper’s record in Detroit?

Not really related to the game, but the team woes…Is it fair to place it all on the Ford family or is that just an utterly retarded question to even pose? Does Rob Parker still have a job out there?

Culpepper is 0-7 as a starter in Detroit

In the two games he started this year, the Lions scored 20 points (against Pittsburgh) and 0 points (against GB). He didn’t do anything in the GB game, and against Pittsburgh he went 23-37 for 282 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. I guess anything is possible, but I would expect something more like the GB game.

Considering how bad the franchise has been since the Fords bought the team, that’s fair to do. And Rob Parker still is on TV and last I heard was writing for our NBC affiliate’s website. Somehow the douche still goes on ESPN regularly, but he is out of the big papers in Detroit thankfully.

What are the fans expectations going into next year?

I mean, it looks like Stanford is the real deal if they can keep him health and well…Calvin Johnson is just a beast. Are you all expecting a coaching change or are they going to go with continuity? And speaking of continuity, can we expect more first round draft picks on wide receivers since Matt Millen’s underlings are still running the place right?

unlike we go WR in 1st drez brayent is top WR and he is about 15tth at best

kwan is only coach that might go and even he is unlikely

it really depends we have a tough season next year but if we get at lest on

O-line up grade hoping for
OG Mike Iupati in the 2nd

2 D-line upgrades i think if we draft McCoy or suh and then grab DE Kyle Vanden Bosch in FA we will be ok there

then 2 CB 1 S in draft and maybe a few FA pick ups

All so need a better num 2 WR but that’s not as high on my list as other parts

Just Remember matt... what would Daunte do??

I’d love to have Suh and Ngata together.

Troy Smith, Foxworth and McGahee for Calvin Johnson?

We need a pass rusher!!!!

Peppers to go w/ healthy Sizzle? All of a sudden our DB’s will be better!

Agree

The more and more I watched this team, the more I want a pure DE. Peppers would be perfect for us. Him and Suggs with their hands in the dirt, Pryce come in sometimes then let Ray, T-Good, JJ and Ellerbe run the outside with Kruger coming in often.

Favorite moment this year and thoughts about your defense?

Was curious which one of these moments was more exciting for fans? Beating the Redskins or Stafford’s winning-td? Let me know if their were any more positive moments I missed out on besides the obvious beast that “Megatron” C.Johnson is. I was wondering also what you thought about your defense this year? I saw some pretty good effort out of them at times but want to know from your view what you think about their development. So far I know Foote and Delmas have been looking good for you guys.

"We don’t have any rearview mirrors in our car,"- John Harbaugh

by purpleonblack86 on Dec 11, 2009 11:22 PM EST reply actions

favorite moment

was definitely Stafford’s game-winning td against the Browns.

Our run defense is way improved compared to last year. Getting rid of our undersized, soft defense and upgrading at the linebacker position (Foote, Peterson, and Levy) are a big part of that. We’re about average now against the run :-) Our pass defense is still a train wreck, but you can’t fix 0-16 in just one offseason.

It looks like we finally have a competent front office who can evaluate talent and draft. Stafford is the real deal. He’s a leader. Pettigrew was really showing how good he can be as a pass-catcher and an elite blocker until he got injured, so we’ll have to wait to see him further develop until next year. Our top two defensive picks look like they will be really good in this league—Delmas and Levy appear to both be home-runs. I’m excited to see those two for the next 8-10 years. Sammie Hill, our 4th round DT looks pretty solid too, but he’s been slowed by an ankle injury.

But, we’ve been hit hard by injury and really lack talent at a lot of positions. We can almost field an 11-man defense with the names from our IR. Our pass rush is nonexistent, and our corners can’t cover anybody. Every QB seems to have a big day against us. That, and our O-Line, should be the two biggest priorities for the offseason. We’re deep at RB, but pretty thin at WR after Calvin.
