Ravens Lose for 2nd time to the Bengals 7-17
- Nothing clicked for us today. Flacco was rushed all day long and the line couldn't seem to stop a pass rush that was missing their best player.
- Defense played well in the second half, but screwed up big time for us in the first half. The whole game plan was thrown out the window because of a 0-17 deficit at halftime.
- Penalties killing us again. This time, it was not because of the refs but rather our selves. Leading the league in pass interference calls is a terrible stat to have associated with your team.
- At least we got the Browns next week......

I’ve said it many times, but i really like when we play the ravens. Your fans are incredible and by far my favorite in the division. It sucks to have lost twice, but I personally can’t complain as a bengals fan.
Anyway, hopefully we beat the steelers, then you sweep them and can take the wild card away. Good luck the rest of the season.

just sad
I wondered what is stronger here, the support for the Ravens or the hate, envy & jealousy of the Steelers. Now I know. Congrats on writing for Beatdown. May I suggest a topic of how penalties kill the Ravens.

i've been saying that our penchant for penalties has been a killer for a long time
and honestly we’re not jealous of the steelers, we just want to beat them. Keep telling yourself we’re jealous, its fine.
And for MaLoR, you can bet Pitt will have a successful season. The way they’re playing right now a repeat is quite possible. We all hate to imagine it but I prefer to live in reality.
Our best hope at this point is 9-7 coupled with multiple implosions of other wildcard contenders. If we finish even with Houston and SD at 9-7, its possible that we get the WC. Having said that, I doubt that outcome very sincerely and I expect SD to win at least 10 games while we win at most 9.

Good game
I’m backing up what I said in a previous thread here on Baltimore Beatdown and coming here to say good game. I think the Ravens are still a dangerous team once they get their chemistry together- but it just wasn’t working today. I don’t know how you blowout Denver and then have a offensive performance like that. Anyway, good luck with the rest of the season. Us Bengal fans will be routing for you to beat the Pitstain Steelers.

Pitt has a TEAM. We have 2 superstars and their playbooks and then a bunch of star watchers with their playbooks and to top it off we have coaches who take their cues from the superstars. i think mattison, harbaugh and cam ask permission from certain players to start and end practice.

A bit less controversy this time.
But both offenses sure were flat for the majority of the game. Defensive struggle in this one.
Do us a favor and beat Pittsburgh next time you see them. Best of luck the rest of the way!

don’t play offense. While the defense didn’t have their best game, considering the amount of time they were on the field, the Offense needs to overcome a f-ing 17 point deficit.

I can't possibly agree with that
We are a better team. We were out of sync today. T. Gooden miss-judged several tackles. We had like 80 penalty yards. Also, toward the end of the game we had a couple of bigtime inference calls that weren not thrown. I likewise have to mention Ochocinco crying and getting the interference call in the endzone, too. There isn’t enough to complain about, but overall we really gave it to them this week.

Unfortunately, you are correct
Our o-line played horrible, the defensive line was pushed around, our LB and DB’s couldn’t cover or tackle and the offense was inept with Flacco missing receivers who couldn’t get open or holding onto the ball to long all day. Add in a sad, sad kicker and we have the recipe for future failures on a team that we all thought was poised to make a super Bowl run and now looks to have significant holes on both sides of the ball. We need a corner, pass rusher and wide receiver, plus a placekicker.

He played really well for the most part
Except that one block in the back on the punt return – but of course I would rather have him returning punts than Carr anyway, until he is a starting corner, then I don’t want him on special teams.
I think Foxworth, Webb and Washington actually make a pretty good cornerbacking trio, we just need to get consistent pressure on the QB. Would be nice if Washington could catch the ball on should be interceptions though.

Don’t BS me, we all know with 6 mins left and you guys down by 7 things would have been different. There wouldn’t have been so many mistakes by Flacco later if he had more time and less points to make up. Lets just say the rookie cost you the Vikings game, Stover is a lifetime 84% kicker.

Absolutely
I really think that was pivotal for the Ravens morale. If he makes that the Ravens look at the rest of the game with the mindset, “We are making the comeback”. Sure it wasn’t over when he missed, but that’s a huge confidence killer.

In a tough spot now
Well as I said earlier this week a loss in this game would put us almost out of the division race, and certainly makes things tougher for the playoff race too. But the way I see it we have three tough games left (two Pittsburgh games and vs. Indianapolis), and historically (although not last season) 10-6 has been good enough for the playoffs, so one out of those three (preferably Pittsburgh) might be ok. Two (again, preferably Pittsburgh), or all of them would be great though. All the other games are games that I think need to be wins if we want to be considered a playoff team anyway, so losses would be unacceptable (especially considering the Bears recent losses and the packers losing to the Bucs).
As for today’s game I don’t really know what to say other than the Bengals just outplayed us. The defense came out a stiff I guess and did not play well in the first quarter, but played really well for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. As for the offense, to me it seemed like the Bengals defense just played really well. There were a lot of throws where Flacco put the ball exactly where it needed to go, with great timing, but the Cinci corners (Hall or Joseph, both played very well) made great plays on the ball. Flacco made a few bad passes – the one pick he wayyyyyyy underthrew the deep ball – and had a tough time against the rush but I just think the story was the play of the Bengal’s corners. Hauschka missing that field goal really hurt, because I think the team saw that as had he made it, the comeback was going to happen. He has to get these misses out of his head, because important games often come down to field goals at the end.

Also want to add I though the officiating was actually exceptionally good today. Ravens need to stop committing penalties, or the referees will never give them the benefit of the doubt.

Yeah you guys would think that the officiating was good because you won both challenges
I thought it sucked.
by St. Esiason on Nov 8, 2009 5:25 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And both of them were correct. Did you not see Chad’s foot on the line, or are you blind? I thought the other one was a bad spot on the field, so that actually kind of sucked we had to use the challenge. Even so, the Ravens had so many penalties called against them, and rightfully so. I don’t really understand how you could be upset with that.

Better team one...
across the board, the Bengals played a better game. I think since it happens only once every 12 or 14 years (not trying to knock any Bengals fans but lets be honest….Mike Brown is going to milk this season for another decade of ass backward management), it feels so shocking that the Bengals are actually fielding a quality team. The losses on defense in the off season have hurt us. Why even try to deny it? And while our offense can get going at times, we still are not a team that can consistently be carried by the offense alone. I know I may piss people off here, but we were spoiled last year. Everything went our way. From losing week 2 and having a forced Bye, which at the time looked bad but then when we did face Houston, they didn’t have their QB, to the Titans playoff game, which we lost in every facet of the game except for take turnovers and the final score. This year we aren’t getting the bounces like we did before.
I am just sick of the penalties and I am not blaming the officials. The Ravens play too emotional at times and its getting irritating seeing the same people do the same stupid things. The secondary needs to just get blown up and start over from scratch in the off season. We need a shutdown corner for Reed to be effective and without one, and I am sure I will get heat for this, his play is a liability. The defense no longer has the players to play the same way we did last year.
I am also sick of hearing the Stover comments. Not from this site but from all over. We had to move on. Its similar to the Packers finally moving on from Farve. Yeah its sucks, but eventually we had to get a new kicker. Now is Haushka the answer? I don’t know. But if anyone really things that making that field goal was going to change the game…I just don’t agree.
What kills me about losing to the Bengals isn’t their fans, nor the players (some of whom I have a lot of respect for like Palmer and even Ocho Cinco), it’s losing to that jackass Mike Brown. I hate the fact that this season appears to validate his way of operating his team on the cheap, screwing over the locals, and doing all the shitty things he does year in and year out. Its the opposite of losing the Steelers. I tend not to like their bandwagon fan base, I tend not to like some of their players, but I respect the Rooneys a lot. They do it the right way and more teams need to emulate them. I think my pure hatred of Mike Brown comes from the fact that Irsay did the same shit to us for so many years and turned one of the greatest franchises in history into a joke and robbed an entire generation of football from a city. I see a lot of that in Mike Brown.

I'm a Bengals fan, and I say ban this guy
This attitude does not represent all Bengals fans, and it’s embarrassing that all teams seem to have at least one douchebag fan that feels like the actions of 53 guys he’s never even met have bestowed upon him some “right” to act like he’s better than other fans.
Ravens fans – as a follower of a team with a long and mostly pathetic history, all I can really say is the odds against this small dip in football fortune for the Ravens matching the long term ineptness of, oh, the Browns, Lions, and for most of the last 2 decades, the Bengals, are very long indeed.
You have a good team with many good pieces. They got pushed around a little today. Some probably had an off day. But you know (and have seen) that they can play with anyone if they put their efforts together and play like a team. For the first time in a long time the Bengals are doing that.
I’m happy as hell the Bengals are playing well. It’s been too long in coming. But the Ravens have too many good pieces to think they’ll slip off into football irrelevance for years. There’s a core of talented youth to build around, and any deadwood will turn over as the seasons do.
I won’t insult you guys by saying it was a good game because I think you’d think it was a platitude, considering the Ravens performance. I think we can all call it as it was – a poor showing on their part. Those suck, but they can be overcome. Trust a Bengals fan on this – they can be overcome. Instead of good game, I will instead wish you a successful rest of the season that, if nothing else, allows the team to grow and continue its success in coming years. This rivalry is too good to hope for ill fortunes on each other; it’s best when two good teams square off.
I look forward to our 2 games next year. Now go kick some Steeler ass!!

Agree with most of this
I don’t enjoy complaining about the refs. Some people love to. My buddy Zach calls holding on the other team on just about every play. He’s usually right of course, but you could call holding any time you want. These games aren’t being called evenly though. The refs badly missed a delay of game in the first half (the play clock clearly said 0:00 for a full second) on third and 10 that the Bengals ended up converting (and scored later in the series). Harbaugh had to challenge two plays (and was correct on both) while the Bengals didn’t have anything close to a bad call to argue about. Mason was clearly interfered with in the end zone on the series when Hauschka missed the field goal. That’s a HUGE play. It should have been first and goal from the 1 yard line. In a game that the Ravens played as though the whole team was out drinking until 5 a.m., I can’t blame the refs for the loss. But man, I’m getting sick of how one-sided it is most weeks.
But the refs are not the ones scoring the points and allowing the yards. Sure, they mess up here and there and calls do not go our way what seems like every game, but we SHOULD be good enough of a team to overcome penalties, whether they are our fault or the refs. The refs made some bad judgment calls during the Broncos game, but we OVERCAME those calls. We did not overcome the calls today and it lost us the game.
We have to stop blaming the refs, because there are 31 other teams in the league that hate the refs as well.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
by Mr MaLoR on Nov 8, 2009 10:16 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yup
Refs have been bad league wide this, and this game the refs were good. Us Ravens fans have no right to complain about a missed delay of game penalty since last year in the Titans playoff game that is pretty much the only reason we won. So the only bad call yesterday was that missed call of PI on Mason. The missed calls where we challenged were overturned, that is why the challenge system is in place. However, I do like the college challenge system better, where anything can get reviewed by the booth and the coach gets one challenge (reuseable if used correctly). Either that or you shouldn’t be limited to three challenges – if you keep getting it right, why should you run out? Getting every call correct is more important than worrying about five extra minutes of game time.
by klunker18 on Nov 9, 2009 1:01 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
How can you say the refs were good?
We had to use two challenges for calls that they completely missed. The refs in the NFL still suck, but that is not why we are losing games.

Rays lack of respect
After hearing Ray refuse to give respect to Benson, the Bengals & the officials on NFL Network this morning, I wonder what he has to say now? He continued to mock the officials & the rules & still refuses to change his style of play. He is the leader of the most penalized defense in the NFL, that is a fact. By refusing to play within the rules he is setting a standard where the secondary is over reaching & drawing some of the stupidest penalties I’ve ever seen. Why isn’t Harbaugh sitting his team down & going over the rule book instead of letting them play back lot football. Whether anyone likes the rues or not, you must play by them to win. When Ray says he will continue to play his way & not worry about penalties, what is he teaching his defense. He is not bigger than the Ravens, or the NFL. How is he helping his team to win? There is no discipline on this team right now & it is Ray’s & Harbaughs fault.

where was Ray after the game?
Ray had a lot to say to NFL network before the game, this from the Balto Sun after the game;
“Middle linebacker Ray Lewis, the unofficial spokesman for the defense, got on his cell phone when reporters approached him.”
Mr MaLoR, I promise no more trash talk from me, & I promise not to mention that team from Pittsburgh. But I gotta ask, doesn’t yesterdays play back up my views on what is hurting the Ravens? Immature play resulting in a lack of discipline that translates to penalties & losses. I can’t believe that coach Harbaugh gets up in front of the media & tells the world he needs an explanation on what pass interference is. I know he was trying to be sarcastic, but doesn’t the play in the secondary reflect on his poor coaching? Does he need to read the rule book? I’ve mentioned previously that this team doesn’t need another cheerleader, what they need is a coach who can take control back from Ray & instill some disciplined play. When Harbaugh stands behind his players & indicates that it’s not their fault, that the officials have a bias against them, he is reinforcing Ray’s stance of continue playing your way (the Raven Way) & let the flags fall where they may. Well, they fell yesterday. I got a lot of heat on this forum for questioning “the Raven Way”. Maybe a few of my points were backed up yesterday. No trash talk, I hope you have listened to my views & don’t consider me a troll anymore, but I would love to hear the views of the most die hard Raven fan on this.

Ray is playing the way he always has
And like he said, full speed. You sound entirely wrong in your tone, seeming like each and every penalty is Ray’s fault. Ray is at fault for very few of our big time penalties this year, why is it all on him? I do not think that the NFL has a conspiracy against us, but I do in fact believe that we are watched a little more closely than most other teams while playing. This is because of our violent, relentless and ruthless style of football we have given the NFL since 1996. Yes, Ray is the leader of this team and has always wanted to lead by example. He does that for the most part and many people are failing to realize that our defense is in the middle of a HUGE transition. And when a team is in the middle of transition and revamping their whole style of play, mistakes occur.
Discipline is a problem right now. But many of the reasons for our penalties is because we are just simply getting beat by the opponent.
Honestly, I am sick and tired of this penalty talk. It makes the Ravens look like whining pussies, which just causes more stress on myself. You can take away every penalty the Bengals got and give us the ones we should have had called against the Bengals, and I STILL think we lose this game. We were outperformed yet again by the Bengals and did not deserve to win that game with our play.
Penalties were not the reason the offense could not get a single point in the first half. Penalties were not stopping Cedric Benson from running it right down our throats all day. This was actually one of the better officiated games I have see the Ravens involved in this year. I rarely noticed the calls today as I constantly saw our players getting out performed by the Bengals all day. Many times earlier in the season, of course I was upset to see some of the calls and non-calls against the Ravens. And it is idiotic by anyone to think that we were not screwed over by the refs in NUMEROUS games this year.
But the penalty talk needs to stop, and you bringing up the topic yet again is not helping the cause. The refs are not scoring points, gaining yards or coaching the game. We failed in all aspects of the game today and proved to many that we are not the team that much of us and the rest of the league though we were after week 3.
So drop the subject please and focus on our players if you want to talk about my team. If not, please go back to the Steelers blog and worry about the Broncos, not where Ray Lewis was after the game. Let the man be. He lost, no need to have the media and the rest of the world make him feel even worse because his showing of confidence in his team was demoralized for one freaking week.
Peace.

same old nonsense
“So drop the subject please and focus on our players if you want to talk about my team. If not, please go back to the Steelers blog and worry about the Broncos, not where Ray Lewis was after the game.” by Mr MaLoR
Nicely worded but still the same old Raven do or die nonsense. Why the Ravens draw so many penalties is THE most important topic this forum should be discussing. but you don’t wish to discuss that because you’re sick & tired of it & want me to go away? If Ray is the leader & inspiration of this team, what is wrong with calling him out when I believe his leadership is hurting the team? I’m sorry, but the lack of respect he showed before the game & hiding after the game is small in my opinion. I’ve offered an opinion on why the Ravens are leading the NFL in penalties. Those penalties cost us, you may choose to overlook that fact because of your feelings for Ray. I don’t choose to do so. To each his own my friend, but I have as much right as you do to offer my opinion here. I welcome yours, why do you keep insisting I go away?
Peace, my friend.

You asked for the view of a die hard Ravens fan
And I did that to my best effort without getting out of line. That is my opinion yet because it comes from me, a person who is not hesitant to speak my whole mind unlike others on these blogs, you treat my view points as if they are irrelevant and pointless to the topic.
All I read now on the other blogs is “oh here comes another week of complaining about the refs by the ratbirds.” You want us to just keep discussing the penalties, but then all we hear is “let me guess, the refs lost it for you?” I’m tired of that stuff. All teams get unfavorable calls, but the good teams can overcome it with solid play.
So if it’s alright by you sir, I would like to discuss problems in our scheme such as the lack of a passing game, poor pass and run blocking, lack of a pass rush, and so on. It is better as a team to worry about fixing aspects of our game that you can control and fix after a game, you cannot correct penalties that have already happened. So we need to let them go and focus on next week rather than flags from the week before.
If we keep worrying about penalties, an aspect of the game which cannot be reversed once those 60 minutes are up, instead of how we couldn’t one single drive going until the game looked out of reach, we are going to get no where.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Penalties are on the Ravens, it's part of their tradition
“you cannot correct penalties that have already happened. So we need to let them go and focus on next week rather than flags from the week before.
if we keep worrying about penalties" from MaLoR
but if we focus on eliminating those penalties next week, won’t that give us a better chance to win?
& you’re failing to grasp my point. I’m not saying the Ravens get the penalties because of bad calls by the officials, some are, all teams get an equal share of those. I’m saying the flags come from poor play! The Ray Lewis led Raven Way of overly aggressive football that is unrepentant & goes beyond the rules. The Ray Lewis hit/penalty/fine on Ochocinco. The endless pass interference calls. The unsportsmanlike conduct, even called on OUR COACH!!. these penalties can be corrected, but not until the Ravens recognize the problem & stop blaming the refs , the NFL & a conspiracy.

Why do you keep saying us?
You represent all that is evil and wrong. Please don’t associate your self with us. Don’t take that wrong way. Sleepless night cuz of a test this morning.
Listen I could care less about talking about the refs. Jesus Christ! Even with those flags, there is no excuse we should not of overcame that 17 point deficit. That’s what we are trying to focus on, not what the refs are going to do.
Create a fan post if you, as a steeler fan, have so much to say about us rat birds.

get used to losing
I want the team to play better because I’ve lived in Baltimore since I was born except for a short time I left for work reasons. I want this city to have a team it can be proud of. I don’t think the Ravens are that team right now & I’ve explained in a reasonable way why. You again resort to the insults because I don’t support the team the way you would like me to do. I won’t hold it against you though, IT’S JUST THE RAVEN WAY!! You’re the one who keeps bringing up the Steelers, I haven’t once mentioned them. You brought them up in your 1st reply to your own article. Hilarious! As long as the Ravens refuse to look in the mirror & try to correct their own faults, they & fans like you will never be more than the .500 team they are. What is so wrong with trying to make your team better by eliminating stupid penalties? Anyone here have an answer to that? & btw, I’m not going anywhere unless Bruce bans me. If he does, I would like the courtesy of being informed why.
Peace Brothers!

Worrying about fines and all that, I'll let that take care of itself.
Ray Lewis “But the bottom line is, when I turn to go, I’m like a missile. When I’m locked in, I’m locked in. Whatever’s there is there. Worrying about fines and all that, I’ll let that take care of itself.”

Heads up
Hey Ravens fans. You guys have a great football team, so I’m not counting you out of anything at this point. You all have taken the toughest teams of the year down wire, so I don’t see any reason why you can’t do the same with the likes of Pitt and Indy. I’ve got a lot of respect for your team, so to be honest I’m a little shocked at the talk about the draft and missing the post season. I’m pretty sure that if your team goes down, you’ll go down swinging. AFC North style.
That’s exactly how it should be.
This is our year!

Thanks for the fairr remarks
when you have every reason to point laugh and gloat. Right now, it just doesn’t look promising, but this is the NFL, so who knows? Certainly not me, by the looks of my predictions!

from your own report
From your initial article
“Penalties killing us again. This time, it was not because of the refs but rather our selves. Leading the league in pass interference calls is a terrible stat to have associated with your team.”
from your replies to my post
“But the penalty talk needs to stop, and you bringing up the topic yet again is not helping the cause.”
“If we keep worrying about penalties, an aspect of the game which cannot be reversed once those 60 minutes are up, instead of how we couldn’t one single drive going until the game looked out of reach, we are going to get no where.”
You can’t have it both ways. It’s OK for you, but not for me!

fair moderator conduct?
Bruce, it’s one thing when Mr MaLoR slings the insults as a poster, but as a moderator I think calling someone evil goes over the line. I’ve kept my posts reasoned & civil. I don’t expect behavior like this from a moderator. I think we should all have the opportunity to share our views in a civil manner without the insults or constant ’go away" requests. Just my opinion.
Have a good day Pal & enjoy the game next week. I don’t have to ask who you’re rooting for in Monday nights game ;-)

I kept my replies as civil as I could also.
You asked for the opinion, yet all you are doing is piecing together each and every single comment I have said about penalties or the game in general and trying to make me look bad, rubbing the loss in even more. I hate the Steelers and all their fans, along with each and every blogger around here, even your hero Bruce. It’s an internet sports blog, and you are treating it as if we are in Supreme Court.
I am not a moderator. I can simply write a front page story, that is all. Man, you are strange and starting to become psychotic it seems like.
