Greetings (again) from Cincy Jungle
Hey gang. Long time no see. We're a few days away from our rematch where both teams are coming into Sunday looking pretty good. If anything, it should be a great divisional game. For those of you that don't know me, my name is Josh Kirkendall and I'm the head blogger at Cincy Jungle -- The SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blogger. We're here to offer any answers to questions about the Bengals you might have in anticipation for Sunday's game.
The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

Cedric Benson
Whats the general consensus among Bengals fans – is Benson going to top 100 rushing yards again this week, or will the Ravens’ run D bounce back with a strong performance and turn him into a non-factor?
In other words, I just want to get a feel for the confidence level Bengals fans have for Benson – is this a guy who could be your franchise running back for years to come?

RE: Benson
I know it’s really damn obvious to say this, but Benson is the reason why our rushing offense is finally effective — it’s been dreadful since Rudi Johnson started collapsing after 2006. The thing about Benson right now is that he’s motivated. He’s comfortable and happy in Cincinnati as opposed to Chicago — a lot of which was his fault. He’s taking advantage of his second chance and he’s only 26 years old.
It’s still questionable though if he’s in our long term plans. He’s only signed after next year and if continues the pace he’s on, he’s going to ask for a really good contract. And if the money is too high, I’m not sure it would be wise for the Bengals to splurge. But that has nothing to do with Benson; just big-time contracts going to running backs after a few years in the league. It doesn’t seem to work out for the team once the RB gets his career deal.
But Bengals fans really like him and feel that he could pick up a first down anytime he touches the football.

Seconding Kirkendall on this one
I think the Bengals have all the faith in the world in Benson as the #1 back. The number of touches he gets is among the highest in the league. In an NFL world where almost everyone has a 2 back system, Benson and then Bengals are bucking the trend either because he’s really really good or because they don’t have anyone else. Given the numbers he’s putting up, one has to lean towards the former, but I think (as do most Bengals fans), if they used Bernard Scott and Brian Leonard a little more, there might be some great production from all three, keeping that #1 healthy and fresh for a playoff push.
Will he break 100 Sunday? We all hope so. Everything we have seen says he can. Hell, the Bengals line up in many formations where the opposition knows it will be a run, and they still can’t stop it. That has more to do with inordinate and surprising depth on the O-line, which has only gotten better with Andre Smith and his notable run blocking skills. Now, if the Ravens sell-out on the run early, they open up the passing game. With the Ravens secondary, that’s a risky play, and with the way Palmer and the WRs are clicking, it’s even more dangerous. I’d say the only way they keep him under a 100 is to successfully run blitz early, force incompletions in the passing game early due to pressure/blitzing, and then force us to pass because we’re behind. Not impossible, but it requires both Ravens offense and defense to be successful.
Will Benson be the #1 franchise back for years? Maybe. But the way they’re using him now, they’ll use him up. Overpaying for 2011 would then be, I think, an unwise move. I’m just happy they have some time to wait and see and evaluate before making that decision.

Andre Smith....
is he going to get any playing time? I thought I read somewhere that his foot is basically healed and he may play in this game.

Also....
Is Brad St. Louis still on the team as long snapper….
and as a follow up to that one….Why on god’s green earth is he still on the team?!?
I kid, but has there been improvement in the long snapping and special teams as that seemed to be the only aspect of the game at our last match up that the Bengals didn’t look good?

Hope Josh doesn't mind if I answer this one
Brad St. Louis was cut a few games ago- I don’t remember exactly when but there hasn’t been any botched snaps since. Coincidence? I don’t think there was a Bengals fan out there who didn’t want him gone after the Pittsburgh game. When he was FINALLY released a collective sigh was aired all across Bengal nation.

Yea, we couldn't figure out why it took so long for the team to let him go.

you could see the coaches chewing him out on the sideline. I almost felt bad for the guy. The writing was obviously on the wall.

RE: Andre Smith
Yea, he’s expected to play, but not start. We’re expecting to see him in big-formation packages, where the Bengals line up three offensive tackles with Smith outside the right tackle. He should make his NFL debut this Sunday, but his playing time will be limited.

In regards to Smith...
Not to keep harping on the dude but he was at least to me, the most interesting pick in the draft for the Bengals, have you guys been able to see anything from him in practice and what are your impressions of him. All boob jokes aside, the guy had tremendous talent in college and I thinks its not if he makes an impact, but when.
Also, what are you guys collectively feeling about the “No GM” thing now that Mike Brown has achieved some success during this season. Is there still loud calls for him to make changes or has this one half of a season dampened the calls?

Yeah, we all like to joke about the boobs.
But when you look past the boobs and the shady combine circumstances and look at the tapes of him in College… he was only on his back maybe once the whole season in the toughest conference in college football. I agree with UMBC that he will make an impact. The only question is when. If the Bengals O-Line wasn’t playing so unbelievably well I would say he would be getting a chance to start right away. But fortunately (for us) the O-Line has been playing way above their heads. Still, Cincinnati fans are excited about seeing Andre in limited action this Sunday against a tough defense.

NO GM
Despite economic excuses, I feel last year was the last straw for many Season Ticket holders. IMO, that’s why the Bengals have faced all the Blackouts. Now, the team is relying on selling single game tickets to avoid these Blackouts, due to big drop in Season Ticket holders.
For many Bengal fans, a few wins still haven’t swayed their opinion. They’ve been down this road before. They’ve seen the owner suddenly work his tail off to put together a decent team to lock up ticket sales for a while, only to end up back where he started a couple years later.
Don’t get me wrong, this is the best team we’ve had in a long long time. Marvin Lewis never really wanted all that finesse crap of a few years ago, and now he has more of an ideal team.
Us diehards are just trying to enjoy these wins while we can, but we definitely want a Front Office improvement, and not just a Yes Man. But we know it isnt’ gonna happen as long as Mike Brown is at the helm.
So enjoy Ozzie Newsome, trust me, we’re envious.

He could get time in big packages, replacing a TE next to Whitworth on the edge.
They enjoy stacking tackles on unbalanced lines. That, or if injury sets in, is the most likely scenario that Smith gets on the field. He’s not going to start, but he’s been healthy for a couple of weeks.

Ravens fans come to Cincinnati Sunday
I need some help this Sunday In Cincy cheering on our RAVENS. I hope that we have many fans coming into town like we did last year. Bengals having trouble selling out PBS again, I say lets help them out and cheer on our RAVENS in Cincinnati.

Not that I know of, this is the only time I go to PBS is when Ravens are in town. It’s Ravens week in my house, nothing better.

Not that I've heard.
In fact, I’ve heard that opposing fans were standing for an entire game that some friends of mine went to, blocking his view. Also, a few visiting fans (of a team that I won’t name) sucker punched a Bengals fan before running away. This was last year, mind you, when the Bengals were waful.

Hi Kirkendall. Thans for stopping over again.
How’s Travis Henry doing. I haven’t kept track since our game. With the focus on Ocho, do you see Henry getting even more passes than he did in our first meeting. Thanks.
by raven on Nov 6, 2009 1:07 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
you mean chris henry?
he’s been spotty. lewis really likes coles and caldwell because they’re solid run blockers, so generally henry only gets in when someone needs a breather or we’re running 4-WR sets.
however, henry has always played really well against division opponents and i don’t think this game will be any different. the bengals know they need to stretch the field and he’s the best option we have to do that.

also, hows your rush doing without your star DE? did they have to juggle the line to get more push on that side?
by raven on Nov 6, 2009 1:09 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
the jury is out
it’s only been one full game since odom went down so the sample size is small. however, frostee rucker looked like a beast in the game against chicago, and he’s always had that potential if he could keep himself healthy. fanene is also interesting because he can line up inside or outside and has 3 sacks on the season, in limited time. the last factor is michael johnson who is our 6’7" rookie man freak and has the chance to really break out if he can get the playing time. i think this will be a good test for our DL as gaither is back and your line has looked really good all season. I don’t see us getting to flacco a ton, especially with all the max protection the ravens give him, but i think they can pressure him enough where our corners can capitalize.

This doesn't have anything to do with the game...
but what is the consensus amongst the Bengals fanbase in regards to Katey Blackburn. Am I wrong to assume that she will take over the team when either Mike Brown steps down or he passes on? My opinion of her wasn’t all that great in regards to what little of her was seen from “Hard Knocks” but then again, other than the players, your defensive coach, and his wonderful wife (may she rest in peace), I came off with a rather poor impression of the organization.

The Bengals are a family business, so you are not wrong to assume she will take over. I don’t think anyone was super-impressed with her from Hard Knocks, but then again she has the job of being the cutthroat negotiator. When you take a hard stance there, it’s tough to come out looking like a nice person.
The biggest major problems with the organization are that it is way too small and has very little outside perspective. To keep payroll down, too many jobs are split between too few people (primarily scouting comes to mind), and very few people with outside ideas, perspectives, and plans have come to the team, which resulted in such a long period of doing things the same way (the bizarro world opposite of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” – the team was very broken, but nothing new was done). The coaches can only do so much with a crappy product, and it took so long to turn it over and turn it around with their way of doing things (it also helped we actually got some competent coaches in Zimmer and Fitzgerald – Lewis can’t do it all alone).
The real test of this organization is if they can keep this glimmer of success growing and stable for awhile.
