Ravens Win Ugly in OT, 20-17
Wow, as the headline says, the Baltimore Ravens did whatever it took, as ugly as it was, to win this game in overtime, 20-17. The Ravens and Steelers are now tied for second place in the AFC North, but the Ravens own the tie breaker for the time now and are still in the playoff hunt at 6-5.
However, the Pittsburgh Steelers didn't just roll over and give this game away, as their third strong QB, Dennis Dixon had a very good game with both a touchdown pass and run to keep the Steelers in the game until the end.
Any way you want to look at it, the win no matter what, is certainly a heck of a lot better than what it would have felt like had the Steelers pulled this one out in the end instead of our Ravens. Time to put this one in the back of the file and move on to next week as soon as possible.
At the same time, a win is a win in the NFL and with this ugly game behind them, the Ravens can now focus on another prime time game next Monday night when they visit the Green Bay Packers in what will be the first night game in December in Green Bay history.

All I can really say...
…is that it was a hell of a game. You often hear the analysts constantly going on about what a brutal match-up these Pitt vs Balt games are, but you know in the back of your head, that they’re just trying to talk up the game and keep viewers interested. (I’m sure they say the same crap during Cleveland games). I often wonder if they even believe half of the crap that they spout.
However, tonight, both of those teams proved them right. The game was played at a high level of intensity throughout, and I’m glad that I watched it, even if my team lost.
Congrats on the win and a great game.

It will be an interesting race between our teams.
We are surprised as well that we are at the hunt. We have 13 rookies and 27 new players since last year.
Yet we have a TOp 110 RUn offense and defense. And our guy MJD scored to most TDS in the league.
We have one major player(REggie Heyward) on IR; and currently 1 injures on the active roster (Rashean Mathis( and 3 home games in a row are coming up…and the Jags are 4-1 at home…)

tough loss for us, but the game lived up to every bit of my expectations for a Steelers/Ravens game..tough defense and low scoring. Gotta hand it to Dennis Dixon, he played a great game, and damn that Ray Rice is a pest to stop:) Looking forward to the next meeting in Pittsburgh….congrats to your team, let’s crank it up again in a few weeks! Fun game to watch… exciting. I’m really happy with Billy Cundiff right now. The man appears to be a legit kicker. Holy crap. To come up at the end like that and almost make a 56 yarder in a rush was pretty sweet.
Paul Kruger actually making a play was fucking awesome.
Oh, and I’m not to worried about how we got the win… this team has lost plenty of close games to good teams. They have the talent, now they need the opportunities, and they got one today. In addition, we know own the tiebreaker over Pittsburgh. They can’t beat us for a wildcard if we have the same record. In addition, we have wildcard breakers over the Broncos, which is another needed boost.
by math_geek on Nov 30, 2009 2:07 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Ummm....we're not out of the woods
yet. We play the Steelers again, in Pittsburgh, on 12/27. If they beat us, then the head-to-head is tied. I believe the next tiebreaker would be Division record, then Conference record, followed by wins over common opponents. (Am I right? Can somebody help me out with this?)
Anyway, my point is that this is not the time to get overconfident. We still gotta win each game one at a time, and hopefully overcome the disadvantage of playing in PA.
by Psychropod on Nov 30, 2009 12:25 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Okay. Division record obviously comes before head-to-head…but I think the rest is right…

Steelers win over us in December will
only tie us in division record (both 3-3). They head to head is a tie but then common opponents and conference record. We beat KC while they lost. We lost to Vikes while they won. If we beat the Bears, that’s another in our corner, as they lost at Chicago. We both could make the postseason thru tie-breakers but it all won’t matter if we don’t beat the Packers.
aka 'Rexx'
by Bruce Raffel on Nov 30, 2009 1:21 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Solid Bruce, but the better way to look at common games is to see who has the worse record in uncommon games. The Ravens lost both games that don’t count towards uncommon games (Indy and New England), where the Steelers beat Tennessee. Therefore, the Ravens will have a better record in common games if the two clubs are tied overall.

nice win! i couldn’t watch the game (it started at 2am our time, argh), so i only watched the highlights this morning, but it looked pretty awesome. Kruger FTW! :)
i almost had a heart attack when watching the cardinals-titans game (cardinals being my GFs fav team), and that was really heartbreaking at the end, i was hoping this time it would turn out better for the ravens. And it did, which is great!
now let’s focus on green bay, which is a good, but beatable team.

Swept you in 2006, but you guys were not good then. Actually, in 2007 our last game of the season at home against you guys and we were on like a 8 game losing streak. Snapped that with a win over you guys. Then again, Ben and Troy were not playing, much like last night!

Very entertaining game, with a less then entertaining outcome, but c’est le vie. No excuses, a win is a win, and you guys got one on us. Good luck from here on out, except for December 27 of course. It will be a scrappy finish, it should be worth something for each of us, see you then.

still not sure why webb isn’t returning punts. Carr looked good, but you guys make every PR look good.
another scenario is that the steelers’ skid continues while the ravens’ doesn’t, giving the ravens more to play for in the second meeting.
I also didn’t like our playcalling last night. We over-blitzed and Dixon was able to use his feet to buy time and figure things out. See how he screwed up once we went to a soft zone? I don’t understand why we didn’t do that earlier. we could have picked him multiple times.

yeah he's pretty bad
i think he did well last night though, given the circumstances.
A common problem among coordinators is their inability to recognize and adjust to their own offense’s strengths and weaknesses. They have this dream scheme in their heads and they keep working to get their offense to run it their way when in reality their offense would be better suited to a different style of play. Arians might be a great OC if he had the Cardinals, but he doesn’t. He has a team that should go run-and-gun, which would probably result in more big plays out of his passing game.

I really do. I don’t like playing against teams with high profile injuries. I don’t like playing with high profile injuries either, but oh well.
I don’t whine about injuries (sorry Baltimore Warrior, I know you really want me to, haha) so I don’t want anyone else whining about them to me. Everyone has injuries, this isn’t pee wee football, I think there are talented players all over the place in the NFL, coach one up, and shut up. If you can’t do it, that’s a you problem. That’s how I see it.

i agree
you’ll notice that since losing suggs we’ve only given up 17 points in each game. i’d say the committee replacing him has done well. Either that or Suggs was badly underachieving in the first place—I’d say its a bit of both.
To be honest, I don’t mind missing Suggs for the time being. Considering that we’ve done OK without him and its getting Kruger more reps, I think in the long run this will make our bench players more prepared for game situations.

You guys could still beat us at home. We’ve been too up and down recently. It’s all going to come down to Flacco though. If he can have success in the air, and get a good game out of Rice (whom I covetted coming out of Rutgers. He originally signed to play at Syracuse, and backed out) recieving and you’ll be right in it. I have little doubt Rice will keep us honest, at the least, running with the rock. We know your D isn’t running away from us that’s for sure.

no not at all.
I understand that we CAN beat you, but you want to talk about up and down? We also had a 3-game skid earlier this year and we haven’t won back-to-back games since. One game the offense is unstoppable but the defense gets trampled, the next game the offense looks Billick-ish and the defense looks like classic Ravens defense. Last night you nearly beat us with a 3rd string QB who had never started an NFL game in his life, in primetime, IN BALTIMORE. While I’m glad to have won the game, I still think we should have put the dagger in you guys much earlier in the game.

After the season ended last year I, like most other Ravens fans, had just accepted the sweep and moved on. You know you’re gonna beat them sonner or later so there’s no point in focusing on the streak. Our head-to-head over this decade is pretty even.

I think most fans would just give you some rambling nonsense at this point. Most are blindlly angry at someone, and some of them aren’t even sure who yet. They’ll figure out someone to blame soon enough. My guess is a combo of Madden (some people really buy into the curse) and Ariens.
Ariens will get ran out of town on a pole by the fans if we lose to you guys at home.

It always is a battle of intensity when the Ravens play the Steelers. Last night was no exception. It was everything the media build up said it would be and I couldn’t have been a happier (and tired) guy this morning. Dixon showed a lot of moxy out there. He was poised and played a good game. It was even nicer for me to see three rookie Ravens on defense show there stuff too… Way to go Webb, Ellebee, and Kruger!
