Ask a Steelers fan

Apparently, we have some big rival game this week.  I believe both of our fans thought this game might mean a little bit more at the beginning of the year (i.e. 1st place in the division).  However, I don't want to take anything away from the importance of the game.  Both of us need to win if we want to keep any sort of playoff hopes alive.  Whoever loses might start looking towards the draft.

I think Tomlin had a nice quote from his last press conference:

This is a competitors’ business and we’re competitors, but Redemption Sunday, if you will, is coming for us in the form of the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football ... That medicine is just what the doctor ordered when you look at where we are, having the opportunity to play our rivals on prime-time television.

I am sure your team is looking at Sunday's match up exactly the same way.  We can expect one hard hitting physical match up.  Oddly enough though, I would not be surprised if this game was a shoot out in the high 20s or more for both teams.  That would definitely make it interesting.

Anyway, shoot away with questions and I will field the ones I can, or another Steeler blogger will help.  I generally won't field trash talk, but since this is our arch-rival I will shoot some trash talk (avoid personal attacks).

The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

I'd expect a relatviely low scoring game

The Ravens offense has been almost worthless and our dfefense hasn’t given up more than 17 points in over a month, averaging allowing only 10 points a game during that span. So for those offensive minded football fans who don’t appreciate suffocating defenses, I’ll recommend going to bed early Sunday night. Otherwise, if you love a war, this is worth staying up for. Regardless of the stakes in the division, a possible playoff berth has a lot more on the line, because as you said, more than likely, the loser is out of that race for this year.

while i have no doubt that ben will play

I still think that franchise is absolutely daft for letting him get smashed like this every year. this is what, his 4th concussion? Ummmm…. that’s a problem. He better not pull a Kyle Orton when JJ is coming off the edge or he could have a serious medical problem.

Not sure what you expect the franchise to do. He holds on to the ball too long, and no linemen can hold their blocks that long. Sometimes it has a bad result, a la concussion, but most often it produces big plays, remember the SB?

Our line is good this year, not like it had been in the past. I’d say 65% or more of Ben sacks are on him this year.

What Johnny said

Plus, he sustained this latest injury on a scramble, trying to gain a first down, and dove head first.

fair point

the line does look much improved. but the guy needs to go have a sitdown with steve young or someone else who had a concussion end his career and figure out how he’s going to change his game to prevent that. I mean when you’re talking concussions you’re talking about life-changing injuries here, not just football.

Hey Bruce, has the site gotten slower because of the losses?

Or is it just due to the holiday?

Is it really certain...

that Big Ben will play? Considering the bad press the league has gotten over the concussion issue.

well its no shock that they're saying he's playing

because they want the ravens to prepare as if he’s playing.

it’s conceivable that he could dress but not take the field.

But they said he was asymptomatic the next day after the hit, so that would pretty much satisfy the rule-of-thumb that you need to be asymptomatic for a week prior to playing again. Plus, I seriously doubt that a 6-4 steelers team that is clinging to life will like the idea of starting Dennis Dixon against the Ravens.

Ben's a tough dude

Say what you want, he is a warrior and will absolutely be in there as long as he can see straight and walk, which is sort of up to us, right?

No dissagreement on Ben's toughness....

I respect the hell out of the dude. But the NFL is not doing enough to prevent careers being shortened by concussions. You know that there is a mouth guard, utilized by boxers, that drops the occurrence and severity of concussions significantly. But because it’s a double sided mouth guard, QB’s would have a harder time doing hard counts….so they don’t force its usage. It makes as much sense as the NHL not forcing the usage of goalie masks because it would effect peripheral vision.

It sounds hollow that I am harping on this so close to the game against them, so obviously I must have arterial motives or whatever… I seriously don’t want to see great players get knocked out of the game early over something that can be better prevented and managed if people would just look at the larger picture.

Just read a very interesting article

in GQ Magazine about the concussions and dementia that led to deaths in many past NFL players. The NFL did whatever necessary to discredit the doctors and even had their own committee, but without a single head injury doctor on the panel! Finally, due to the embarrassing things that the committee was overlooking and the obvious evidence, the NFL has just recently began to admit there might be a connection between the incredible violence and concussions and dementia and other horrible behaviors that has led to early deaths among former NFL players.

i have a question?

Would it be possible for the Steelers to cover a kick return or can we just watch him run by like it’s another day at the races. Look out Ravens we’ve got a mean special teams this year! Pfffffffffffffff………..

Bring a towel to the game. Black or gold or yellow. If you don't have one buy one, If you can't buy one, dye one!!!

by SoCalSteelerFan on Nov 26, 2009 1:49 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, Steeler's ST's suck

but then again, if they could stop just half of those returns, they might be in first place at 8-2 instead of 3rd place at 6-4 (for now).

how is Flacco's decision making ability right now?

Has he improved this year? I’ve heard about some bad interceptions. Then again his nemesis # 43 won’t be there to confuse him.

oh wait we’re asking Steelers fans in this thread, not vice versa. oh well too lazy to change it now

Inside the Red Zone,

it has been awful, by my thoughts. Three times he has been picked there in close games and I think he has regressed to deciding to throw the ball regardless of coverage to a specific receiver.

next step for Joe

In my humble opinion. Joe has as good an arm as anyone in the NFL. His composure is astounding. His heart is enormous. What I don’t see are the leadership skills. The ability to adjust & think in that split second that turns a passer into a Quarterback. For some reason Baltimore does not ask their QB’s to think, & seem to be afraid to ask them to lead the team on the field. Obviously he is still in his 2nd year. But like Billick before him, Harbaugh coaches his QB like he is playing a video game. Manage the game, make the plays & don’t take any chances that will lose us the game. True Quarterbacks need to have the handcuffs taken off & given a chance to win the game. It’s an old story here in Baltimore. Playing to not lose. Playing to win is a different game. Mistakes will come as will losses, but it’s part of becoming a QB. I hope Joe gets his chance here.

If Dennis Dixon does have to play in this game, do you guys really have faith in him to lead you to a victory?

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Nov 28, 2009 1:32 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Not sure

I have not seen enough of him to judge how I think. I think since your pass rush has been down this year and your secondary is not up to par this year, it is not completely awful. I expect Mendy/FWP/Moore to get a lot more carries this weekend. Also, look for a lot of quick releases from Dixon in the flat, to the RB, and across the middle to Heath. I will be surprised if he takes a lot of shots down field. If our D can hold you under 14, I think Dixon could pull it out for us.

3rd stringer

That’s a lot to ask of a guy who is your 3rd string QB & his 1st NFL start. I couldn’t tell you if he’s left or right handed or anything about him. I see a lot of runs in this game & clock management. Still, all you need to do is look at the Detroit game last week to see anything can happen. Also for the kind of quarterbacking that I’m talking about. That guy (I can’t even remember his name right now) took over his team & the game like a veteran QB. Sorry, MaLoR, I’m not trash talking Joe now, but I still am looking for that quality in his play. There’s passers & Joe is among the best & Quarterbacks, I think Joe can become a great one, but he hasn’t shown the take charge leadership it requires yet.

Ready for some Football!!

Playing in Baltimore gives the Ravens an edge & with Troy out some of the pressure will be taken off of Flacco. If Ben is not 100% that will also hurt Steelers chances. However, believing in the football gods, who determine which way the ball bounces, the Raven towel promotion being instituted Sunday may even things out. Who ever approved this idea needs to be smacked down & it may come at the teams expense. I hope the commentators don’t make Baltimore look too silly for more of the Steeler envy they’re displaying. Have fun & enjoy the game to both group of fans & I hope we get through it injury free. ;-)

Actually the Ravens organization did a good thing with this towel promotion.

The Wounded Warrior program is outstanding. Yeah, they could have gotten a little more “creative” in their efforts and did something besides a towel, but even us Steeler fans (who can look past your Steeler envy..lol) can appreciate the sentiment behind the effort and salute the people who will benefit through this promotion. I second the hope that both teams get out of this game injury free.

When the tailgate drops, the BS stops. Shut up and play!
