Ravens' Win Follows Last Year's Gameplan
Watching the Baltimore Ravens complete domination of the Denver Broncos in yesterday's 30-7 victory had the team looking just like the one that went 8-2 in their last ten games to make the AFC Championship Game than the one that had blown the previous three by a total of 11 points.
Everything that most fans have complained about here on The Beatdown, on the airwaves and across the internet, seemed to disappear on a day that started off rainy and ugly but finished bright and beautiful. Whatever happened during their Bye week must have sunk in because the guys who showed up certainly improved in so many areas that were blatantly obvious issues prior to the game.
(Click on the 'Jump' to read more on "Ravens' Win Follows Last Year's Gameplan")
Going into the Bye week and up until gametime, the fear that most fans had was that we were not able to put pressure on the passer and even Kyle Orton would be able to pick us apart and use the huge Brandon Marshall to embarrass our secondary. After allowing two straight 100+ yard rushers, our defense faced the brunt of the fan's criticism and combined with he lack of the pass rush, needed to come up with the big plays to change those jeers into cheers.
Well, they all responded in a huge way. Denver's Kyle Orton was only 23-37 for 152 yards and while he did not throw an interception, he didn't complete a pass over 23 yards for a QB rating of 71. Speaking of Brandon Marshall embarrassing our DB's? Marshall had only four catches for 24 meaningless yards, including a long of nine measly yards. His best play was the ridiculous long pass interference penalty called on the Ravens after the referee right at the play called it incomplete only have another ref from the complete other side of the field run over and throw the yellow flag. Two more penalties kept the drive alive as the Broncos scored their only points of the day. Take away that pass interference penalty and the penalty at the other end of the field after we had a first and goal negated by a sissy personal foul call on Michael Oher that took away a possible TD for a FG and the score could have been as bad as 34-0.
The Ravens defense held the Broncos to 200 yards of total offense and totally shut down the Broncos running game, limiting them to 66 yards, holding starter Knowshon Moreno to just 39. The pass rush may have only had two sacks for the day, but seemed to have constant pressure on Orton all day. LB Jarret Johnson got it started on the Broncos first possession by rushing in untouched off the edge and slamming Orton to the turf a la Bart Scott's hit on Ben Roethlisberger three years ago. Amazing how much better the DB's looked with a decent pass rush, eh? Remember how many times I kept writing that for the past month or so? The Ravens pass rushers were in Orton's face all game and that showed by the hurries that caused incompletions and totally domination in the trenches against what was considered one of the top offensive lines in the entire league.
Offensively, the Ravens weren't rolling all over the Broncos top rated defense, but we were efficient and effective. Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron stuck to his game plan and kept pounding the ball into the Broncos athletic yet undersized defensive front seven, finally breaking through as the game progressed. Denver's vaunted pass rush did little to faze Joe Flacco and their top pass rusher, Elvis Dumervil was held sack-less.
Speaking of efficiency, I heard that Flacco complete his final 14 passes in a row to finish 20-25 for 175 yards, the one beautiful 20 yard TD pass to Derrick Mason and a stellar QB rating of 109.2. WR Kelley Washington made the most of his four receptions, each resulting in a key first down. Denver's Champ Bailey pretty much shut down Derrick Mason for most of the game, necessitating key plays from Washington and a couple of acrobatic ones by Mark Clayton to pick up the slack.
Lardarius Webb proved why he continues to deserve to get the ball in his hands on kickoffs and may be closer to doing the same on punt returns as well. Camera shots of Head Coach John Harbaugh on the sidelines imploring the fans to get out of their seats and cheer on the defense got huge reactions throughout the stadium as it was as loud as it have ever been, proving why this stadium is among the toughest places to come to for visiting teams.
Make no bones about it, the Denver Broncos are a good team and for real. You know all Ravens fans will be rooting for them as they host the Pittsburgh Steelers next week in the Mile High city on Monday Night Football. However, the Ravens proved they were a much better team than their 3-3 record indicated and yesterday were a much better team than the Denver Broncos. The Ravens have scored over 30 points in five of the seven games in 2009 and if their defense continues to play at the level they did yesterday, which was a lot like last year's one, this team could very well reel off a string of victories to get us firmly back in the hunt for the AFC North lead, starting next week with a revenge game at the Cincinnati Bengals.

Amen to that!
They’re a tough, physical team too. but I guess I’m not telling you anything. It’ll be a good test for the Broncos, seeing hoiw they handle adversity. I hope the Broncos do as well as your Ravens did yesterday.

Great game
Hopefully the defensive issues have been sorted out permanently, because next week at Cincinnati is a huge game now. Win that game and we could be tied for the division lead (with a Pittsburgh loss to Denver, which would also be excellent), lose and we will effectively be three games out because of the tiebreakers.
I think something about the game that really deserves mentioning is the special teams play. Obviously there was Webb’s 95 yard return, but what really impressed me was the kickoff coverage. Eddie Royal is a very good return man and it seemed we were stopping him inside the 20 every time (I think the first return of the game he brought out to around the 30, but after that it was nothing).
Has anyone heard about Ngata? He went down at one point and I heard that X-Rays were negative, but I would like to know more.

Kick Coverage was Great!
and here is what is being reported about Ngata on BaltimoreRavens.com by Mike Duffy:
Mike Duffy
Ngata Sprains Ankle
Posted by Mike Duffy on Sunday, November 1st, 2009 at 7:55 pm | Categories: Mike Duffy, Week 8: Broncos Game Notes
Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata’s sprained ankle was the Ravens’ only major injury Baltimore’s 30-7 victory over the Denver Broncos.
Ngata underwent X-rays that were negative.
"It was a goal-line play, and I was holding up an O-lineman," Ngata said. "Right as I threw him off, somebody hit me from the side or something. I felt a little numbness. I could have stayed in throughout the game, but I think since we were winning, we’re being more cautious with it. We’ll look at it tomorrow and see how it is."
Ngata was injured on the Broncos’ first drive of the third quarter on Baltimore’s 3-yard line. Two plays after Ngata left the game, Denver running back Knowshon Moreno bulled in for a touchdown.
The fourth-year veteran tallied three total tackles and a pass deflection. Ngata was also a big part of holding the NFL’s seventh-ranked rushing offense – one that came into Sunday averaging 132.7 yards per game – to only 66 yards on the ground.

lol…
It had been fun talking Bronco fans. Good luck throughout.
B-more is a tough place for you.
We have outscored the Broncos 81-25 over the last 4 home games. I’m not sure if we’ve ever lost to the Broncos at home. Your cryptonite.
The obscure:
Clayton’s amazing sideline catch that wasn’t shown on replay on TV for some reason. It was just short of the 1st down/ may have been negated by a penalty but spectacular. This guy has great hands. That drop against NE was such a fluke.
With Webb’s size it looked like he was carrying a medicine ball on his kick return. He looked like he was holding groceries.

He was also running out of steam and
heading towards the corner as he was getting ran up on by the Broncos coverage. Ten more yards and they would have caught him.

Love it
Funny to think that we were just a few stupid penalties away from blowing this game out of the water with 41-0 or 34-0. But we overcame those big time penalties and just destroyed them.
Is anyone else not getting tired of seeing the highlights on ESPN over and over again? I just cannot get enough of Reed’s hit on IDontKnowshon Moreno. I could hear the hit from my seats.
Reed also had a killer game on special teams. He was super close on blocking two punts.

Thought this might add more to our hate towards Peter King
Calm down Mase
Peter King thought Derrick Mason overacted when the referees missed a defensive holding penalty in the first half.
"For a veteran who’s surely been mugged on more than a few pass routes, Derrick Mason of the Ravens went way over the top on a jersey grab by Denver cornerback Alphonso Smith," King said. "He deserved the 15-yard flag for unsportsmanlike conduct after throwing his helmet. Calls get missed, Derrick. Relax a bit."

Mason’s been in the game long enough that he should know how to handle himself on bad calls. We’ve all had bad officiating. I didn’t freak out and get T’d up every time I got fouled on a layup in basketball. Mason shouldn’t be getting Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalties—ever.

If refs were consistent, maybe players would know how to react
The blatant inconsistencies in what constitutes a penalty is maddening for fans and I would have to assume it is worse for the players and coaches. It seems to me that the press (who depend on the NFL for a living) rarely discuss the issue, and this is another cop out in that regard. Coaches and players get fined for griping. My guess is the writers will catch some kind of flak if they do as well. They pretend it is not an issue, but the fans know it is.

The thing that pissed me off the most was that all the refs refused to look at the jumbotrons, which were showing the replay of the missed call. The replay showed Mason’s jersey being pulled back a good ways. The refs just stood there staring at the ground.

If the ref right there had thrown th eflag
perhaps I could deal with it. But for the ref all the way across the field calling it while the one right there said no call, that is what ticked me off!

by Bruce Raffel on Nov 2, 2009 5:26 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
don't get me wrong
it was a TERRIBLE no-call. seriously, one of the worst. But treat it like a court case—let your LAWYER do the talking. Mason should let Harbaugh be his voice because he’s plenty vocal with the refs and you know it won’t end well when a Ravens player starts jawing at the refs.
Did you see when Mason almost walked back onto the field and Harbaugh got in his face? For one, Harbaugh seriously looked like an intimidating figure for a moment there, and for two, Harbaugh was totally right to tear him a new @$$hole for losing his cool like that. What did Mason do after that? He chilled out. He should’ve just chilled out in the first place because Harbaugh was going to complain anyway.
"Just win baby. Yeah, I stole that."

Not only that...
but let’s be completely honest here, if Mason takes the helmet off on the field and chucks it, or the helmet traveled back onto the playing field after he chucked it on the side line…Mason could have gotten kicked out of the game. He can’t lose the war over one little battle.

you aren't making a point
the point is that nothing good will ever come of mason throwing a fit over a bad call. it doesn’t matter how bad the call was. you keep cool. you’re more than a decade deep in this game, you’re a vet, you need to control yourself. When you don’t control yourself, you hurt the rest of your team.

I'm not griping about calls against one team
It’s a league-wide problem. King in particular is an NFL sycophant. After the Ravens-Patriots Brady fiasco, he wrote some baloney about guaranteeing the league will always call any touch to the QB lower body or helmet a penalty. OK, fair enough, the word is the NFL is going to be very strict here. I watch MNF that very night and see Sanchez pounded in the lower leg and QBs get whacked in the helmet multiple times. No flags. I see teams trying the deep pass multiple times a game just because you’ll get a penalty once out of three (or so) incompletions. I watch receivers initiate contact with the secondary and draw penalties when the CB reacts. Seemed the in vogue move was to run directly at the CB, run into him and then cut. Penalty! Every once in a while the receiver will get flagged if it is too blatant. It’s bullshit and quite often makes me turn off the game. The national sports writers mention nary a word, but the emphasis on helping the offense, especially in the passing game is a league-wide problem. Too bad no sports writers have the stones to call the NFL on it.

Well Bruce you are probably half right
Just playing the odds of a maturing Bengals team beating an established team of the quality of the Ravens twice in a season puts the probability in the Ravens favor. I see a real potential for a loss here on Sunday. But if the Bengal team that showed up against the Bears is on the field I don’t think it will be easy even if the Ravens team from the Broncos shows up. Both team playing a full complete game on both sides of the ball seems to me to have the makings of a hard fought game to the end. I think we have a 7-3 record since Marvin took over if memory serves me well. Just a little humility could be in order don’t you think? I don’t make excuses when you beat us. I don’t say we would have won if. You know what they say about the dog and the rabbit.
Hey, I think you have a very good chance to win on Sunday, but not if the team thinks it will be easy. If your team thinks it will be easy it will be- but not for the Ravens but for the Bengals. We are the under dogs this weekend and the only game we have lost were games where we were favored to win. As underdogs we have a perfect record. I’m just saying.

I noticed he doesnt like hurting peoples feels or putting himslef in a situation where he could put down a player. Every quesyion he answers about players he’s like they’re good players, even Frank Walker after L. Webb got time and he didnt.

i agree
i’d consider dropping D-Will for chambers but that’s it. And i doubt harbaugh would do it.

They bring the same things. Both are underachievers at this point in their careers. Chambers is just way older. Williams knows out system and Chambers doesnt. Just does not make sense to me to bring him in and cut Williams who is not all that bad.

Chambers is an underacheivers. Yeah I mean he was only Phil Rivers’ top receiver for a few years, no big. I mean, D-Will has accomplished at least as much…. right?

Lol
His best season for the Chargers was 35 receptions for 555 yards and 4 TD’s.

Look for yourself. Totally a top WR. He was pro bowl caliber for SD, which is why they cut him.

Williams just has not gotten the chance
Behind Mason and Clayton, he does not have the opportunity to put up 50 catch seasons. Chambers is better than Williams, no doubt about that.
But saying he was Rivers top WR is crazy. He obviously was not, as you can see by the 77 total catches he had in the 2 and half years he was there.

we’ll split on this one. not rivers’ best WR, but better than D-Will
in any event, I have no expectation of the Ravens signing him. I just said I’d dump him for D-Will for arguments’ sake.

Not true, JJ
raven is just a misunderstood escaped slow person. Most of his posts are fair and balanced, although many were tilted AGAINST the Ravens in actuality. However, he is incredibly funny if you can read thru the sarcasm and cynicism and certainly not nearly as offensive as Who-Dey.

OK Bruce, I trust your judgement. I agree that who-dey is a bit of a jerk.
I do however find sarcasm to frequently be the last refuge of the uninformed and intellectually challenged.

I have said and I repeat Whodey is a jerk
I would have no problem with you guys banning him. If a guy came into my house and acted like a jerk I would show him the door using as little force as possible and as much force as necessary. Who dey is a couple of tackles short of an Oline. If Bruce says Raven is ok then thru my respect for him I will give Raven a pass in the future. There is a slow relative somewhere in everyone’s family tree.

Raven fans have never been known for their civility. Having not given you “the power” he has confirmed to me his wisdom. We will see what we will see Sunday MrMalor. Your posts prior to the last game looked pretty stupid after the last game. Why am I not surprised you havn’t changed considering you have to beat us just to break even this year.

Is it because this is a raven’s board that he gets a pass. He is just as much of a troll as who-dey. In my house guests, as long as they act accordingly, are treated even better than family.

Maybe I should make my point a little clearer
I welcome guests into my home and treat them with courtesy. I also expect my family members to do the same. If they don’t I, as head of my household, deal with them and apologize to my guest. I also show discourteous guests the door. IMO a mod such as yourself should do the same.

Ravens..strong hard finish to this season
With the Defense starting to come around for the first time all season; I strongly believe that there is a chance for almost a perfect finish to the 2009 season. with Flacco, Rice and the WR-Trio doing what they do best, if Ray/Reed and the D start to come around I will put money on an almost perfect finish to this great year.
There is no doubt that we could be 7-0 if we had our defense from a few years back. I just think that it’s good to see Baltimore Offense starting to put the team on the map.

Gee, I seem to remember reading this before
I think it was about 3 weeks ago. The game is Sunday and we will see what we will see. You guys were waiting for your D to step up and we were waiting for our O to step up. You beat down the Broncos with a dominating performance. We beat down the Bears in an equally dominating performance. These were the last games we played. Your team is excellent but the Bengals are pretty good too. Frankly I don’t know how it is going to turn out. In fact I have it down on my schedule as a loss. But I also had the first game with the Ravens down as a loss. I think games like this coming one is the reason real football fans love football. It has to be the game of the week. I would not be surprised if either team won. I give us a slight edge as the game is in Cincy and the possibility that Ngata won’t be 100%. If Ngata is 100% I actually give you guys the edge simply because beating a team as good as the Ravens twice in one year is a long shot. I really don’t see a 27 point spread by either team. 10 points at the most and possibly another forth quarter finish. If the Bengals lose or win neither team is on the ropes. Both teams should be in it in December and maybe all the way to the end.

Lets just say
This should be a good game with two worthy opponents fighting it our for the victory. May the best team that day win. No officiating controversy. No major injuries. Both teams need the other to be in good shape after the game so we can give a common foe, the Steelers, the best game we can. Clean and hard nosed play with no real injuries is in both of our interests.
I would agree that the Broncos > Bears but lets not put too fine of a point one it. The Bengals and Ravens both played complete games in their last competition before this big game coming up. I am looking forward to it. How about you? Either way I won’t feel too bad. We have already met my expectations with a split. The pressure is on the Ravens to win just to even the series this year. A win would be great but I could live with a loss a lot more than you guys can. You have 3 tough games coming up with the Steelers and Colts and you still have to beat the Bears though I admit you probably will. The Steelers have the easiest 2nd half and we IMO have the 2nd easiest. At this point anything is possible in the division. Anything can happen. Injuries are the wild card and can throw a wrench of all three of the teams. We are too close in competitive level to expect to compete if we lost one or two relatively major player – and it could happen all too easily. If any of the QBs go down that team would have a hard time finishing it off. There are just too many factors that can go right or wrong which could have major effects. It is usually a 2 team race in our division. Now it is a 3 team race, at least to this point. and that is making this season pretty fun IMO. I really don’t know how really strong Cincy is. It is not out of the question that our best foot is behind us or ahead of us. I am just hopeful. Have a good day MaLor

Jeez, John
That should have been an entire FanPost! What do I know, I picked the Ravens to crush the Bengals in the first game and still think we’re the better team, but until we do it, you are indeed one up in the rivalry for 2009 and a game better than us in the AFC North. I posted a FanPost and would like to see you do the same here with a Q&A from Cincy Jungle. I’ll try to keep my boys in line and you do the same.
Thanks for the posts and traffic, though.
