Saints ink McCalister for stretch run

Preparing for a stretch run into the playoffs and trying to shore up a secondary so depleted that the Rams almost eeked out a victory against the Saints in St. Louis last week, the Saints picked up Chris McCalister.  McCalister was highly touted as a top corner with the Ravens.  What should New Orleans expect?

Star-divide

So the Saints know that McCalister is coming off major knee surgery.  But it's been almost a year of rehab so McCalister is likely back in business with the knee.  The real question is can this guy cover?  Was he actually a good cornerback in Baltimore of was he propped up by one of the best d-lines, the best linebacker, and one of the best defensive schemes in the league?

I'll appreciate any insight from you guys.  I'm a Saints fan and am hoping that this is a diamond in the rough, but there is plenty of reason to remain skeptical.  We have to believe that there is a reason McCalister was still available.  Most of the NFL news media talk seems skeptical of the move.

Also, if y'all want to come on over to Canal Street Chronicles and make a fan post about McCalister we would definitely welcome the insight.  http://www.canalstreetchronicles.com/

Best of luck for the remainder of the season!!!  -xc

If healthy this is a great thing for the Saints secondary.

McCalister is a bum who will contribute about as much as Deuce McCalilister (no longer on Saints) this season.

I rec'd an email from SB Nation's Saints' Blogger

These are his questions and my answers:

Question: The Saints just signed CB Chris McAlister. I had two questions I was hoping you could answer about him that I might be able to use for a post.

Why did the Ravens let him go?

Does he have anything left in the tank?

My answer:

Based on the problems the Ravens had a CB this year, a ton of fans around here were clamoring for his return. However the Ravens didn’t want him, which should say a lot to other teams. He never bought into Coach John Harbaugh’s leadership and was pretty much a distraction in the locker room, qalways late for practices, not following assignments and getting burned by the better WR’s in the league going for the pump fake, always trying for the great pick rather than playing tight defense. More importantly, was that he had a severe knee injury and was not thought to be healed enough to make the cuts necessary to cover. If he is healthy and in a better state of mind than he was at the end here in Baltimore, then you’ve got a big corner who can play real good. If not, well then you will see why no one else wanted him. Plus I also heard he only wants to play safety and was holding out for the right money and team. Perhaps the Saints have both to offer. Good luck, we’ll be watching closely.

Great pick up

He can definitely still play ball, just needed to change his attitude. Smart move by NO.

Yeah

I also think he will do well, if healthy and with a good attitude. I always thought he still had a few years left in him.

He’ll give you exactly what Benson gave the Bengals.
A few good games to prove everyone wrong and then out with the injury.

Might want to pick and choose his few games wisely.
Avoid using him against any receivers who can run under a 5.0 40 time.

Also, have a teammate wrap him up after the whistle so he doesn’t cost you 15.

Good luck and don’t pull all your hair out.

Oh, C-Mac also said

Don’t mention it….have fun counting little yellow flags.

by raven on Nov 18, 2009 7:23 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

ha, hopefully not...

but those yellow flags have def cost you guys the game defensively in the past…including the NE game this year. Refs hate Baltimore almost as much as they hate the Saints.

Ahmen! Finally, an outsider see’s our pain. We are totally over-officiated. But, it’s a small price to pay for the bad ass rep. Even when we’re not so bad ass.

I think the last time we played the Saints C-Mac cost us the game with a 15 yard penalty on a late scoring drive. I remember he had a big part in the loss. May have been 2 Saints games ago..not sure.

last time we played the Saints was in 2006 in the Superdome and we destroyed them.

stupid refs

have destroyed so many games for you guys. But the players have made some bone headed moves, too. Regardless of the cause it’s painful to watch. If the other team is going to win they should have to earn it…not be given it on a silver platter by the refs.

I hope McCalister has his head on straight. I think he knows he’ll be out a job if he screws it up with the Saints. We’re the only team to call and he just can’t afford to f this up.

I'm glad he went to NO

And not some of the other teams. He can really help you guys, just has to keep his cool.

I like to see our castoffs do well. good luck c-mac. may the force be with you.

Keep C-MAC far away from Bourbon Street

Brian Billick was on a local B-more talk show and when he was told that C-MAC was picked up by the Saints, he half chuckled and said “Chris in New Orleans, interesting” .
For somebody as PR conscience as Billick that comment speaks volumes. He commented that he felt that C-MAC didn’t like playing football . Translation he does not like doing the little things during the week that you make you better on Sundays.

Great corner when he was younger and had lots of talent.

Not sure what you will get in NOLA now, but heck even a half hearted slower C-MAC is better than at least one of our current CBs in B-more. So what do we know??
