Where's Graham Gano Now That We Need Him?
After deciding not to re-sign longtime placekicker Matt Stover in the off season, the placekicking competition came down to current kicker Steven Hauschka and rookie Graham Gano during Training camp this summer. Hauschka was sort of the incumbent, having kicked a 50+ yarder in 2008 as Stover's sidekick, while Gano was the Lou Groza Award winner, given to college football's best kicker. Gano made 24 of 26 kicks for Florida State University in 2008, a pressure packed stage every week in the ACC and the rest of their tough national schedule.
While it appeared that Gano had the stronger leg and was outkicking Hauschka in Training Camp, that did not necessarily translate into the pre season games, where Gano only made one of three attempts while Hauschka had more attempts and converted most of his chances. However, just like Training Camp is not the pre season, the pre season is not the regular season. Hauschka has proven that he cannot handle the pressure since the opening game of the season when he missed a 41 yarder that set the tone for his poor season. At the same time, where has Graham Gano gone since his release?
Graham hooked up with the Las Vegas Locos of the United Football League. The Locos are in the UFL's Championship Game on November 27th and then along with the rest of the UFL, those players will be free to sign with any NFL team that contacts them. However, the Ravens probably won't wait until then, much less another week, before signing someone else to take Hauschka's place. Gano has had a stellar season with Las Vegas, converting nine of eleven FG attempts, with a long of 53 yards , including three FG's in their 16-10 semi-final victory to put them in the Championship Game.
While it's probably too late to grab him at this point of the season, it definitely is obvious to me that the Ravens made the wrong choice at the end of Training Camp and never really gave Gano a fair shot to win the job in the pre season. However, if the team's next kicker doesn't make a huge difference, I just wanted to let them know here that Gano will be available shortly. Hint, hint.
NOTE: Graham returned my email to him, and you can see his response toward the end of the comments below. Last night, his Las Vegas Locos defeated the New York Sentinels 41-7 in the final regular season UFL game and Gano was 2 for 2 in FG's and made all five of his XP's.Las Vegas plays in the UFL Championship Game next week and then all UFL players may sign with any NFL team that contacts them. Are you listening Ozzie...?
The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

Wrong decision indeed
We continue to live with the mistakes of Hauschka. Long live Matt Stover.

Stover is just grinning at his opportunity next weekend to come back here and stick it to us

That would hurt!
and make the team look real bad. How about Hauschka or hopefully the next man up hitting the game winner for us while Stover misses the long FG that could tie or win the game for them?

I would give Stover nice round of applause if he nails a game winner against us. To be sent packing for an unproven “rookie” in the NFL. Throughout that entire great NE/Indy game I was hoping for Stover FG’s. Kind of nuts wishing for that.
Unfortunately, Stover will be desiganated to drilling 5-6 extra point attempts and discussing union matters with assistant coaches.

Stover wasn't sent packing for an unproven rookie
He was sent packing because he couldn’t hit the longer FG’s and his kickoffs died at the 15 yard line and we had to keep two kickers on the roster to compensate for his shortcomings. Sure he is a decent substitute but you think he’s going to stay on the Colts roster as soon as Vinetieri is healthy? Nope!

The Colts have 2 kickers and are undefeated.
Dump Stover when you have nothing else? You can’t find one other guy to leave off the roster for an automatic kicker and fan favorite.
His kick-offs died at the 15 for 10 years.

Wrong
With Vinitieri injured, he is not part of the active roster. So the Colts only have one kicker and a punter who also kicks off, which we don’t have.

Stover's kickoffs were just about the same as Steve's
Hauschka seemed to never be able to kick it into the endzone. They always got to about the 5-10 yard line, same as stover.
FEAR THE NEVERMORE DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed
that his leg was stronger than Stover’s but not as strong as Gano’s.

Why couldn't Ozzie just listen to us, Bruce?
Gano was a hot topic here around BB, and we knew that Shankska was not the answer. Look where we are now. Bringing in a guy who we have very little trust in and was out of a NFL kicking job for a reason, whoever it may be.
Everything would be fine and dandy had we stuck with Gano. We would be at least 6-3 right now with him.

Wow, love your optimism
and Graham would love it as well. Can you imagine the s-eating grin on his face today?

more like the grimace on his face today as he considers the fact that he got beaten for an NFL contract by a guy who obviously sucks.

Where's Graham Gano ?
He had his chance in pre season and blew it! Turns out neither him or Hauschka were the solution.

Kicking it in the UFL Championship Game
for the LV Locos, and hitting almost everything he attempts, including a 53 yarder, dealing with the pressure as well. What a novel idea, eh?

According to Aaron Wilson
of the Carroll County Times & National Football Post, Nugent’s people said he wouldn’t be the one signed today, but we will see what happens today.

Oh man am I scared of the direction this team is heading this year.

i'm ready for 4-down offense
unless field goals are 30 yards or shorter…
I’m not exaggerating. I’m dead serious.

Loo at it this way
We will be more exciting and more dangerous as we wil only be kicking those 30 yarders and going on fourth down from the 40 in!

yeah but we’re not a great 3rd (or 4th) down team. I agree that we probably should give more 4th downs a try in enemy territory, but for that you need receivers who can get open no matter what. We don’t have those guys.
My 2010 Draft wish list includes:
Dez Bryant (the christmas gift you know your parents won’t buy but you ask for it anyway)
Julio Jones
AJ Green

Julio Jones is only a Junior
So he won’t be in the draft this year. But I would LOVE to get Dez Bryant. Grisham the TE from OKLA would also be a great fit.
But my list of needs as of right now that we need to fill through the draft in the first 3 rounds is
1.CB
2.WR
3.DE
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

My list looks more like
1. CB
2. WR
3. CB
4.WR
5. CB
6. WR
7. CB
AND, if we can trade for more picks, I say we look for a CB or a WR…

Nice list
I agree. But Ozzie will go in this order.
1.OLB
2.RT
3.S
4.MLB
5.LG
6.RG
7.OLB
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Probably a good guess
But I’d bet on a RB and another S appearing from 5-7.

Graham just sent me an email
in response to mine. Here’s what he said today tp my ststement to him that we need him back:
Subject: Hey!
“Hah I wish they would take me back! That would be awesome. But hopefully I keep kicking well and get a shot somewhere. Quite a few teams are showing interest so it should be fun! I hope things are going well, take care.
Graham”
