Ravens @ Browns: 2nd Half Open Thread
Wow, this is getting scary, much less embarrassing. The Ravens are now part of the 2009 history, as along with the Browns, now have the only non-scoring first half of the 2009 season. Great, just great. In fact, I just looked at the team's stats and see that we have not scored an offensive touchdown in the first half of a game since the New England Patriots game! That was week four when we had just finished off the Cleveland Browns to start the season 3-0 and looking like one of the top teams in the NFL. Since then, we have lost four of our last five games and the only first half TD we scored was on Ed Reed's interception return in the first of two losses to the Cincinnati Bengals. Since then, nothing but offensive troubles.
Wow, what a difference a few weeks makes, as this is week 10 and the Ravens 9th game. The Ravens look tentative, slow and out of sync. They used all three of their timeouts early in the first quarter. Lucky we didn't have a need to challenge a play. The longer Cleveland sticks around and keeps the crowd in the game, the riskier this gets for the Ravens. Considering the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts played one of the best games I've ever seen last night on prime time TV, this one is one of the worst. Combine that with the fact the Colts come to Baltimore next week, this game is looking as ugly now as that one could be next week.
Let's see what happens in the final 30 minutes. Ouch.

Typical MNF Appearance
The rest of the league, especially the Colts and Steelers are laughing and salivating, waiting to play us to pad their schedules. Ouch!

1. It’s nice that all 3 backs are getting carries.
2. Clayton and Kelly can’t get open. Kelly did and was missed.
3. 2 penalties on the Harvard grad.
4. Can’t blame the D. Old man Price>Sluggs
5. Rice 4 times in a row can be tiring -for him.
6. Edwards and Gooden haven’t screwed anything up yet.
7. We’re moving the ball but Cleveland is holding the ball for fair amounts of time thus cutting our time on O.
8. We need to just keep running and we’ll start busting them. The point of 3 back attack is to wear them out. I hope Cam stays with the run run philosophy.
maybe the flood gates have opened

About time, but
we needed the Browns to only have ten players on the field to score. HAHA!
aka 'Rexx'
Now why couldn't we do this
in the first half? Notice how close Hauschka came to missing the XP? He barely kicked it he was so nervous.

by Bruce Raffel on Nov 16, 2009 10:26 PM EST up reply actions
Steven Hauschka is not NFL material
can’t handle any pressure
I was watching Ron Jaworski's breakdown
of Flacco’s passing and so many of the replays he drew on had absolutely ZERO Ravens in the middle part of the field on pass patterns. Why is the middle of the field always empty to our game plan?
aka 'Rexx'
Now, let's demoralize them
with a defensive turnover right now and put this game out of reach and make everyone wonder why this didn’t happen BEFORE halftime!?

Look at my previous post,

Steven is kicking his way out
slowly and surely
SLOWLY?!?!
Short of him running on the field and tackling Landry himself short of the end zone, I am hard press to imagine how Hauschka could f- up more…

Graham Gano's season ends
after the UFL Championship Game this week. I say we sign him right away. I know they won’t but even Mike Nugent is a better choice than giving another stupid vote of confidence for him.
Seeing Matt Stover come here next week in a Colts uni will just be killing us, huh?

interception. Illegal low blow by Quin on Suggs. Suggs limps off the field.

Gotta admit
the Browns are doing everything they can to give this one to us. Horrible playcalling and poor defensive substituting, plus no plays downfield for Cleveland. They are terrible and we still might put up 30 on them w/o scoring in the first half.
However, this should in no way give us an additional thoughts of an upset next week, as that is the difference between good and bad in the NFL over two weeks.
aka 'Rexx'
Yeah you guys should only be up 3-0 if it wasn't for two deflected picks
Your offense is in trouble.

and our defense is not that bad, so we should be doing this to a bad team.

I'm lovin Brady as the starter for the Browns
He makes them virtually the worst team in the NFL. Just in time for the Bengals to play them again.
Mangini is a horrible coach
and did nothing with the Jets and the Browns hired him right away w/o looking elsewhere! I’d hate to play for him as much as Jamal and everyone else secretly does!
aka 'Rexx'
Stupid gimmick play!
That would be okay in the first half on 2nd down, but not now. Run the damn ball down their throats. Jeez!!!!

I've never felt so bad about being up by 16 in the fourth quarter
Watching the browns is painful. I’ve stopped.
Koch's punting and Special Teams
coverage has been excellent tonight.
But once again, even though we’re winning, we are still not utilizing the middle of the field nor ramming the ball down their throat with McGahee and McClain.
A shutout will still be good for the defense though.

See, what I don't understand is
why isn’t Rice on teh sidelines for the rest of the night and why isn’t Willis and LeRon taking turns punishing the Browns defense for the rest of the game?
aka 'Rexx'
You know everyone's complaining about the Browns
refusal to throw the ball long to try for the big play or the penalty, but…
have you seen the Ravens even do that as well? Where is the long ball that Flacco throws so well and has Clayton even caught a single pass tonight?
aka 'Rexx'
Nope no catches for Clayton
This was your problem in the Bengals games. Its clear Mason and Clayton can’t get open or Flacco is too quick to check down. I’ll go with the latter.

brilliant strategy
Everything that got us to the afc championship last year……lets not do that and start over with a new strategy.
Yeah, take what got us to 3-0 this year
Using three guys to run the ball and blitzing and throwing long, then stop doing all that and giving it all to Rice so Joe can throw to Rice and Rice can run then Joe can screen to Rice, then…

Shutout is still nice
for the record books and stats.
Speaking of stats, Cleveland gives up an average of over 400 yards a game and tonight just under 300. We’ve held them to under 150, which is damn good regardless of the team.
Our defense played great, it’s just that our offense couldn’t do squat for the most part. See you!
