Ask A Bengals Blogger: Q & A with Cincy Jungle

Hey Baltimore fans. I'm glad to see our relationship is civil enough (unlike that with many Steeler and Browns fans) that we can have a dialogue leading up to our sporting contest in Maryland this Sunday. I'm jsl413, a blogger from Cincy Jungle, and I'm here to field questions and the like, as Bruce is doing over at Cincy Jungle.

Let the conversation flow, my friends, and here's to a quality game in Baltimore in what's sure to be an intriguing match up this weekend.

The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

welcome JS. you’ve got us at a bad time. we are still aching over the Brady Law game. i hope we come out angry on sunday and not humbled. both cities need to get a better idea of what kind of team we have. at this point, i can’t trust this team because when we get something going we get away from it.

Hey Raven,

I dunno if there’s ever a good time to catch the Bengals this year. They’ve been hell for the opposition in the 4th quarter, be it a good team like the Broncos(??), Steelers(), Packers(??) or the abysmal Brownies. That being said, they’ve been close with teams all year, for the most part, and haven’t had to deal with massive comebacks (I don’t count 13 points) to this point. If one team happens to score early and take advantage of an untimely turnover, that might be it.

But, like you say, this shuold be a very telling game. Here are two 3-1 teams that we don’t know much about – the Ravens have beaten the Chiefs and Browns, who aren’t very good. The Chargers don’t seem very good. And we all heard about the “Brady Law” game. This should be a good matchup, and it should (could) tell us a lot about these teams.

I think the AFCN is gonna come down to the wire between the Steelers (who have the softest schedule ever for the next few weeks… Detroit, Cleveland, and KC I think), Bengals (who I’m hoping don’t fade over a stretch where we play you twice and the Steelers again), and Ravens (who everyone in the national media loves). Unfortunately, only 2 teams are gonna make it out of this division, with the other wildcard looking likely to come out out of the loser in the AFCE race between NE and NY.

Probably right about the Wild Cards

but beating us in our crib is going to be a ridiculously difficult task and I’m not convinced you can do that on the road, especially since you will seeing an angry team that has zero intention of leaving this game close enough to have the refs affect it.

I'm not in the business of making predictions.

I find it to be an exercise in futility, and it just gets a bunch of average Joe fans riled up because some other fan said something about their team. What I think fans need to realize is that their predictions don’t bear any impact on the game itself!

That being said, maybe an angry Ravens team has an advantage. They’ll certainly be favored by 7-10 points given that they’re playing at home and everyone thinks they’re a better team. I think we’ll learn something about both teams and have some interesting things to talk about after the game. But what’s going to happen during that game? No idea.

For the Bengals Blogger...

1)A lot of the Press said you guys had a stellar draft…
Ignoring of course Andre “Double D’s” Smith, who has had the largest impact out of your draft? (I am assuming its Rey Magalu….damn it, I should be able to spell Samoan names by now…)
2) Back to Super Tits, is he expected to start anytime this year? How has his recovery from his foot injury progress and what is the expectation of him this year?
3) Out of your receiving corp, who has been excelling and who has been disappointing so far?
4) I believe that Marvin Lewis is coming up on the end of his contract, right? Aside from one successful year and this rather surprising start, it seems he’s been really hampered by…well the same thing that has hampered the Bengals since he took over, Mike Brown. What is the opinion of your fan base as to whether or not Marvin gets his contract renewed? If not him, who would the fan base prefer?
5) I know a lot of people have heard how the Redskins sued that poor old lady about her inability to continue to pay for her season tickets. Hasn’t Mike Brown done something similar in which he is suing, getting sued, been sued, whatever, by a bunch of season ticket holders in regards to changing the seat licensing agreement or something?
6) Suddenly the Bengals seem to be able to get to the opposing QB with more frequency this year. Is it certain personnel, different scheming?
7) Assuming you guys watched Hard Knocks, what was your response to Mike Brown suggesting they turn a defensive end into a tight end..(or was it vice versa). That had to be the most insane thing I ever heard….although at least he didn’t float turning a kicker into a kick returning I guess….

RE:

Hey UMBC, thanks for the questions.

1) Kevin Huber, our 5th round punter pick, has been one of the best punters in the league this year. He’s made a huge impact for us, more often than not helping us win the field position game. Rey Maualuga has been pretty good too, but he’s lived up to his aggressive, undisciplined billing. Once he learns how to play football instead of just running around instinctively and hitting things (think of it in terms of Pitching vs. Throwing), he’ll be one of the best in the league.

Outside of those 2, late-round RB Bernard Scott and 3rd-round pick Michael Johnson have flashed extreme athleticism and promise, as expected.

Guys not making an impact include Mr. Smith, 3rd-round TE Chase Coffman, and a variety of other late round guys that didn’t make the squad.

2) Andre Smith might be ready in November. He’s out of his walking cast, and preliminary reports are that he’s in decent shape. The man simply needs to learn to condition himself. As far as expectations go, the right side of the line has been very lackluster in run blocking. He will probably be an immediate force in the running game if he cracks the lineup.

3) Chad/Esteban Johnson/Ochocinco has returned to form this season. Andre Caldwell has been a pleasant surprise as well. I think we all expected Chris Henry to be a little more involved, but I thnk that’s a coaching issue – he’s not getting very many reps in game. FA acquisition Lavaraneus Coles (talk about a hard to spell name) has been pretty… absent. He’s dropped some balls, but he’s also made some big plays. I think the offense misses TJ Houshy’s production, but not his attitude.

4) Initially, there were some calls for Marv’s head. Some people wanted to see him demoted to defensive coordinator and see current d-coordinator Mike Zimmer and his fiery yelling promoted to head coach. I think the fan base is cautious in its opinion of Lewis, who is clearly better than anything we’ve had in Cincinnati in the past 20 years, but has not taken this team to the next level. Personally, I think he’s a terrible clock manager, but he’s learning. If he leaves Cincinnati, he’ll get a job elsewhere.

I think he struggled because at first, a lot of the payroll was dedicated to offense. Now he has a decent defense, and he’s working on building his team that way.

5) I think he was being sued by some residents in the city of Cincinnati regarding stadium construction, and he was recently sued by former players. I haven’t heard anything about legal run-ins with season ticket holders. Someone else might know more about this.

6) I think it’s both. Our defensive line is probably a lot better than most people think it is, especially when Tank Johnson is healthy. We rotate 6-7 guys: DEs Antwan Odom (+30 pounds), Robert Geathers (healthy) and Michael Johnson (athletic superfreak) have been doing a pretty good job on the edge. On some passing downs, Odom has moved to a DT spot along-side pass-rush DTs Pat Sims and Tank Johnson.

Domata Peko has been extraordinary in terms of occupying blockers and demanding double teams. Offensive line coaches are clearly game planning to take him out of the game and trying to force other defenders to make plays in the running game. But really, the improvement in the passing game is a result of 1) more blitzes and 2) healthy, better defensive ends.

7) We were, and are, pretty outraged that Mike Brown has that much clout in personnel and decision making. The guy clearly has no idea what he’s doing, and has absolutely no business suggesting how different players be used. If that’s what he let the cameras shoot, we get nauseous thinking about what decisions he might make that no one is aware of.

I would love to see a breakdown...

of the entire Bengals front office, with special notation of everyone related to Mike Brown either by blood or marriage. There are some really shitty owners throughout sports, but old Mikey makes it a family affair.

Well, the top 3 are all related to Brown.

Beyond that I’m unsure, but I’m sure there’s some Brown-hater that could tell you.

by jsl413 on Oct 7, 2009 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I think this shows a major issue hurting the bengals....

According to the Bengals official website:
Greg Seamon Scout
Earl Biederman
John Cooper
Bill Tobin Scouting Consultants
For the Ravens:
Joe Hortiz Director of College Scouting
Chad Alexander Southeast Area Scout
Joe Douglas East Area Scout
Jack Glowik Southwest Area Scout
Milt Hendrickson Midwest Area Scout
Andy Weidl West Area Scout
Lonnie Young West Area Scout

Granted there are a lot of people that do scouting for both teams that will never show up on either teams web page but I think its a real eye opener and a possible explanation for the likes of Akili Smith (although the contract hold out sure as hell didn’t help the kid out…boy that’s like a theme with the Bengals it seems).

And this is after...

Marvin Lewis came out and said that Mike Brown promised him to increase the scouting department. God I hate to imagine what it was before Lewis showed up. Scouting is the one expense that pays huge dividends in my opinion. I hate to sound like a dick or something…but my god its got to be frustrating to love the Bengals while dealing with Mike Brown in charge…

Bengals had a great off season

and you have to like their draft with the OT and USC’s Maualaga, who I thought the Ravens were trading up to grab when they took Oher instead. Also like the pickup of former Cowboys safety Roy Williams, who was a bust in Dallas but seems to fit in good there in Cincy. Defense is better, offense healthier, makes for a dangerous Bengals team that has had close games against iffy competition so to me there’s no way they can win on the road in division here, after barely beating the hapless Browns!

As I mentioned, I avoid predictions.

As a fan, they only gear you up for further disappointment or undue egoism on game day. So I’ll summarily decline comment on predictions or rationale as to why a team “can” or “cannot” win a future game.

Got another question for the bengal fans

To what extent was Palmer’s elbow injury? I thought it was ligament damage and was shocked that he never got surgery. Have you noticed a loss in distance in his throws? As well as a loss in accuracy in the deep throws? I can’t recall any long distant throws by Palmer since he has made his return. How you noticed a drop off in his production?

"The ball always seems to find Ed Reed...The man is a menace"

by UMBC Oriole fan on Oct 9, 2009 5:36 PM EDT reply actions

to be honest, we havent seen Palmer throw the deep ball

He threw 1 last week against the Browns and it was intercepted. And im serious, there havent been any deep throws. So personally i wonder if he did lose some arm strength. Against the Packers in week 2, Palmer threw and out route to the TE and it was picked off by Woodson for a TD. Normally Carson throws a beautiful ball with a lot of zip. But we havent seen it this year. He flashes greatness instead of showing it all the time like he used to.
But that could also be rust. He missed 12 games last season, and 3 preseason games this year

"Ghiaciuc's play was a distraction"

by Joe Goodberry on Oct 9, 2009 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt he has lost alot of his arm strength

Maybe some, but not enough to not be able to launch one 50 yards. If there is a way to beat us on Sunday, it is to complete passes over 25 yards. I cannot see you guys winning the time of possession game, but if you can hit a couple deep passes consistently, you will be right there with us in the 4th.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Oct 9, 2009 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that one of the things that confounded me...

was that the Bengals weren’t more forceful in getting Palmer surgery. The whole episode seem to play out like they were hoping against hope that Palmer would be able to return so they kept off doing the surgery. Not to continually harsh on the Bengals front office, but the vibe I got was that they were being extremely short sighted to the long term productivity and health of Palmer. I’m sure though that the local media covered it more in depth. From what I understood, he needed Tommy John surgery due to a torn ligament and tendon…how the hell did he effectively heal his arm with just rest? I have a hard time believing that the Patriots, Giants, whatever, would allow their QB to wait and see if they could just come back from such an injury on their own. Do any of you Bengals cats have info on just how extensive his injury actually was?

"The ball always seems to find Ed Reed...The man is a menace"

by UMBC Oriole fan on Oct 9, 2009 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

extent of his injury

was a partial tear, more like the ligament was frayed. So it would heal without surgery.
