Patriots Hold Off Ravens 27-21
In a game that the Baltimore Ravens could have won despite playing poorly and being hit with so many untimely penalties, the New England Patriots held off the Ravens when Mark Clayton dropped a fourth down pass inside the ten yard line that would have been a first down. Until that point the game was in question and a Ravens vicoty would have been an incredible ending.
Alas, that was not to be, but the Ravens are still in 1st place in the AFC North and come home next ot face the Cincinnati Bengals.
Here's hoping that LT Jared Gaither is okay after that head injury and having to be carted off the field earlier in the first half.
Let's hear your thoughts on a great, but sad ending and don't be so hard on Mark Clayton, guys.

The important thing...
is the health a Gaither. I still haven’t heard anything other than he was at a local hospital and he could move his extremities.
We weren’t blown out, we where one play away from winning. Despite the mistakes, the piss poor officiating (seriously, why not just have Brady wear a goddamn flag belt if every damn this is going to get called for him). At least Mike Preston has a chance to really rip on Flacco this week.

I seriously
saw Brady yell at the ref and get a roughing the passer call. I think I could shoot him in the face at point blank and feel nothing. Also, I’d like to extend my hand to Clayton for sucking big time. I guess he will just continue to slip down the depth chart, I’m ready to temporarily give up on him and see more of D Wil. Damn, I’m not a coach. I believe it’s his contract year too, so he should be cheap to hang onto next year by this underachieving garbage.

Oh well, we can’t let it get to us. We were playing Patriots ball all day (we can’t let their offense have the ball that long).
I’d also like to see a game between these two teams where the refs don’t have a major impact. Every time we stopped them on a third and long I was just waiting for the flag.

Pass coverage was...
absolutely terrible, they couldn’t cover the Patriots recievers at all, and when we needed a stop on 3rd down we couldnt get it done. We need to get our cornerbacks going or help them out with a better pass rush. The penalties and the spots hurt us a lot and clayton should have caught that ball, but overall the problem was still that we couldnt stop their offense when we needed to or run the ball enough even though it was still early in the game.

by Bruce Raffel on Oct 4, 2009 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Coverage was not terrible.
We got the stop when we needed to at the end TWICE! We ran an all out blitz on Moss’s TD which left our 5 10 guy to cover Moss who is a foot taller. The refs gave the Pats two HUGE first downs on plays that we covered well. This is the Patriots. We only gave up 234 yards of passing compared to San Diego where we gave up 421 yards.
If I had to criticize anything, I would say we probably could have used more running. We averaged 6 yards per carry. Rice only had 11 carries and had over 100 yards. Plus it runs more clock which keeps Brady off the field. I also was furious of the playcall on 3rd and 4th and 1. We didnt run a QB sneak and we ran single back without McClain on the field. Anyway, cheap calls hurt but we played good enough to win the game. Lets take care of the Bengals. Go Chargers tonight.

I'm gonna go ahead and be hard on Mark Clayton
He lost that game. Yes, the offense played like crap. Yes, we committed stupid penalties. But to drop two perfectly thrown balls on the final drive? Let’s just say Derrick Mason would have caught them. No question.

Give the guy a break. If Flacco didn’t throw that interception at the end of the first half we wouldn’t have needed a TD at that point and we could have run the ball to either score or kick the tying FG.

Im not down with the "if that didnt happen game."
But its true, eliminate the 2 turnovers and we won the game. But oh well, on to the next. Patriots got a lucky break, they didnt beat us, we beat ourselves and the refs stomped us while we were down (which never helps). But as i was saying, lucky break Pats, they better pray we dont meet up again, because it will be different, its a guarantee.
And how about John Harbaugh, it sucks he had to flip out, but it had to be done, and he stood tall for us.

This is the kind of loss that leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
A few things:
First, the playcalling today was nothing short of terrible. We cannot run the ball 17 times vs. 47 pass attempts and expect to come out on top of good teams. Even when we did run the ball, a few questionable decisions (say, running it with Ray Rice instead of Le’Ron McClain on 3rd- and 4th- and 1) absolutely killed us.
Second, other than a couple throws, Flacco played pretty well. The INT he threw was not a particularly good throw, and he should have hit a wide-open Mason for a second touchdown, but didn’t get enough zip on the ball because he threw off his back foot. That last drive was a thing of beauty, for the most part.
Mark Clayton should be ashamed of himself for dropping those last two throws. He dropped one TD in the first half, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt because he really only got one hand on the ball. However, dropping another TD on basically the same route as the first one is not acceptable, especially since he got both hands on the ball. Dropping that 4th-down pass, though- there’s no excusing that. A ball that hits you square in the numbers should be caught every time. EVERY TIME.
Defensively, we definitely didn’t get as much pressure on Brady as we needed to, and he picked us apart when given the opportunity. I feel like Foxworth has problems staying on his feet, like when he was beat by Moss for a TD.
On special teams, Chris Carr continued to stink. Fumbling the opening kickoff, taking kicks out of the endzone and not even getting to the 20, etc. I’m not sure I see what the Ravens saw in him when they signed him, because he was terrible today. Why isn’t Ladarius Webb returning all of the kicks?
As for the officials, I felt we were definitely shafted on a few calls- the Brady intentional grounding non-call, Suggs’ roughing the passer call, Flacco’s mysterious intentional grounding call, etc. I don’t understand how we get the short end of the officiating stick so often.

wow what a game
first time I’ve ever gone out to watch a game that wasn’t a Steelers game. That shows how huge this was. I’d hold my head high if I wore purple (shudder to think). Still in the AFCN lead, and played a TIGHT game against a good pats team. Flacco to Mason appears to be unstoppable. Excellent performance from the ancient wide out. I’m not sure if the Steelers can count on Flacco’s inexperience anymore.
Hopefully the Steelers can take advantage of this faltering and begin to close the gap. Tonight is time for the big boys to play.

Here is Mark Clayton after the game, saying that his dropped pass on 4th down lost us the game. It was a critical pass that Joe threw perfectly and Mark should have caught, but I will never put the blame of a loss on one player. There were multiple aspects that we needed to do better on. Keep your head up, Mark.

yes the ravens lost
PPL can say whatever they want about refs, play selection, Clayton, or whatever
but I liked what i saw from the Ravens the poise of Joe Flacco in the last drive, the defense stepping up to give the offense a chance, and the the fact that the Ravens fought and fought till the end. All of this shows promise that the Ravens will have a good season and that we have a QB for the first time 8)
In my book the Ravens are up there in the “elite teams” in the AFC b/c they hung in there

We took them to the edge, and every Pats fan in the nation knows that they came extremely close to losing that game. Really, it was a coin toss, and the Patriots had luck on their side. If the rest of the NFL wants to put the Ravens to bed, let them.
In all honesty, I’d rather lose to the Patriots now. It’s waaay too early to have our team peaking. I’d rather have an honorable loss to a quality opponent at this point in the season. It will probably keep the team grounded. That’s the Raven way. Let the Pats have the spotlight. That’s what they want. We’ll take the victory in the post-season.

I’m not blaming the officiating for the loss, but you guys have to be happy that the officials were pissed off at the Ravens. There were many “judgement calls” happened to consistently go in the Patriot’s favor.
1. Roughing the passer on Suggs
2. Roughing the passer on Ngata
3. Horrible ball spots (for the Ravens) all game
4. Phantom interference call on Carr
5. Unsportsmanlike conduct on “Raven’s bench”
It makes it look even worse when Brady is asking for the flag before it’s throw, and when it’s thrown, Brady starts laughing about it. It’s like Ray said after the game…
After we go three-and-out and we stop them, we see a flag. And Brady’s laughing! There isn’t no personal foul if you’re still smiling.
Mike Preston had an interesting take on it…
It’s even worse when Brady is gesturing to the official to throw the flag and then the official throws it, which draws laughter from Brady.
That really looks bad, or as Lewis says, “it’s embarrassing to the league.”
Lewis went off in the locker room for about five minutes after the game about the officiating.
The segment will be played repeatedly for the next couple of days, and the Ravens and Lewis will be blamed for having sour grapes. But that’s not the case. Lewis will also be fined but I suggest the NFL review the tapes, and then start handing out fines to some of the officials for missed calls. It was a bad day for the NFL.

Don’t get me wrong, I hated Keith long before this (I find his “Lets make insulting comments about teams” coverage annoying as all hell) but this is basically the final straw.

Oberman has to go
We were all disgusted with his comments about Gaither. Despite the news that hospital report was positive, the whole experience was pretty sobering and needed to be treated with gratitude and grace – not the inappropriate drivel he was spouting. He’s like the guy at a party who throws out insults and belittles everyone, claiming he was “only joking.”
He’s not funny at all. Just mean-spirited.

Yes, it was a joke, and Harrison was stunned to find out that viewers thought he meant it
Here are Harrison’s comments on that:
“My gosh, it’s unbelievable, the kind of backlash with this,” Harrison told hosts Dale Arnold and Michael Holley. “Tom and I we’ve been friends for years. There’s no other person, no other football player maybe other than Junior Seau that I have more respect for.”
I texted Tom and told him, ‘Hey, Tom, I’m going to bust your chops a little bit at halftime.’ It was a joke, and everyone’s getting all bent out of shape," Harrison said.
“This guy’s directly responsible for me having two Super Bowl rings on my fingers, and you think I’m going to call him out? It’s one thing to criticize a guy out if he’s not playing well. But to question a guy like Tom Brady, who I feel like is one of the toughest guys I’ve ever been around . . . It’s totally absurd, ridiculous, that people would actually think that I would take a shot at Tom Brady.”

I actually liked Olberman
he and Dan Patrick were the best part of SportsCenter that has now gone down the drain with a fat old Chris Berman and an overhyped Stu Scott. However, to joke about a serious injury is just not cool.

NFL Rules Committee
Obviously the Rules Committee needs to set some rules for themselves. They have taken the game away from the players and put it squarely on the shoulders of the referees. It is a travesty to see so many games decided by the interpretation of the rules of football. On any given play a “hold” occurs. On any given play a receiver is “bumped” beyond the five. Intentional grounding, ground can’t cause a fumble, knee down, roughing the passer (or in Peyton or Brady’s case, just glancing at the Passer) no wedge formations, what a bunch of BS. It’s high time to give the game back to the teams on the field not the idiots in stripes who are interpreting the rules!
Oh and don’t get me going about the Challenge and Review process. It does nothing more than slow the game down, waste two minutes of my life that I’ll never recover and yet again, allow the referees to control the game! Scrap it, it sucks!

I have no problem with the rules
that were designed to protect the QB, and I’d want Flacco protected as well. It’s the interpretation that I have issue with, especially when Suggs was violently and obviously pushed into Brady’s knees and it was pretty noticeable to everyone. How is Ngata supposed to freeze at the last second and even when the Pats guy hit Joe, how is supposed to pull his hand away at the last second. It’s the intent of the hit that should draw the penalty.
