Media Split on Ravens-Pats Winner
While the Baltimore Ravens are getting a lot of respect as they sit at 3-0 going into today's key matchup in New England against the Patriots, they are looking at a tough game and the media is pretty much split on who they see winning.
On nfl.com, Joe Theismann and Sterling Sharpe see the Ravens winning while Brian Baldinger is picking NE. On ESPN, Mike Golic, Merrill Hoge, Chris Mortensen, Mark Schlereth, Mike Ditka and Tom Jackson all like the Ravens while Keyshawn Johnson, Cris Carter, Ron Jaworski and Adam Schefter are going with the Pats.
Peter King of SI.com likes the Patriots in a close game while over at Yahoo, Jason Cole and Charles Robinson picks Baltimore and Michael Silver takes New England.
Back here at home, the Baltimore Sunpapers still seems to think their hometown team will lay another clunker like they wrongly predicted in San Diego. Those picking the Patriots include Mike Preston, Peter Schmuck, Kevin Cowherd, Edward Lee, Jamison Hensley and Mark Viviano, while the only guy to take the Ravens is Ken Murray.
Up in New England, all four writers on the Boston Globe's sports staff pick the Patriots to win today. Wow, imagine home team writers actually backing their team in writing, much less in a public forum!?
The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

are you predicting today's game?
Um, Bruce, the Ravens are still 3-0 as of this writing. Are you clairvoyant?

The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

Purple colored lenses
please excuse the above test. I was banned for a while yesterday & wanted to be sure I could post.
Bruce writes above “Wow, imagine home team writers actually backing their team in writing, much less in a public forum!?”
Bruce, If you are an Oriole fan as well as a Raven fan you may remember when John Miller was calling games for the Orioles. He was fired when the owners decided they wanted a more Oriole friendly broadcaster. Miller moved on to work nationally & enjoys universal respect & a great career. Discussion about a team & how they are playing should be open, frank & honest. John Miller knew that was his job & lost his position with the Orioles when he refused to color his commentary to a fan based Orioles can do no wrong point of view. If he had he would have been doing true Oriole fans a disservice. Writers owe it to their readers to give opinions based on facts. When the Sun writers you mentioned above give their honest opinion you have a problem with that honesty. Would you prefer they pick the Ravens to win every game & look foolish?
I found my experience on this blog very disheartening yesterday. After pointing out that I thought Joe Flacco played poorly Sunday & having his stats to show he performed below previous levels, I was called a moron & an idiot. The trash talk escalated, & I was shortly banned. For this blog to be taken seriously you must allow honest critique of your beloved Ravens. When they fall short & someone points it out, they should not be attacked. If this is a fan based cheerleading squad, then pick the Ravens to win every game, pump up the crowd & cheer your team on. However there are those who like to see the game with open eyes & call it like they see it & when the home town team plays well, will point it out, & when they play poorly, will point it out. I find it unfortunate I was not given that opportunity . Same for the Sun writers, who by the way, were absolutely correct in their predictions.
I believe you do the Ravens a disservice when you see the game through purple colored lenses. You lose all credibility as an honest journalist & become a mere cheerleading fan boy. The Ravens don’t need that.

Word it like this and we have no problem
but unless the words you wrote meant something other than “trolling” to all of us, much less the overloards at SB Nation, the comments you made yesterday were well worth the warning for the future. Feel free to disagree and back it up, pimp your team and beat ours down, but do it like you did in the above comments, not the way you did yesterday. What do you expect when you come to a home team’s site and disparage the team and its fans all the while spouting off about our team’s biggest rival?
Not too sure what yuour point was about John Miller. He was the best voice of the team and one of the best in all of baseball. Hos owners wanted himnto be more of a homer. I’m a homer if you will, on my own accord and do not require you or anyone else to be one here. Just looking for fair and balanced opinions with credible backup. As far a the local writers, my problem is that they never think this team can win the close games and that is not always true and if they write all week about how good the team is, then why do they never give the team a vote of confidence when it’s time to pick a winner. Unless of course, they’re just writing what they’re told to do all week and then pick a team at the end of the week on their own., In that case, they’re controlled robots without any self respect, which has always been my problem with the main stream media, as well as their lack of respect for what we do.
So keep it well said like that and you are welcome to trade banter with us. Otherwise, take a look at your previous posts and don’t blame it on our responses. Okay?

Rivals can be friends :-)
Bruce, as the single Steeler fan in a family of Raven supporters I appreciate how tempering my comments are the key to reasoned discussion. So, agreed, my posts will hopefully be fact based & gently expressed. The Steeler/Raven rivalry can get out of hand for sure & I hate to see that. I don’t hate the Ravens or any sports team. I think Harbaugh is the best thing to happen to them & I have a lot of players I respect the hell out of.
About my previous posts. If you review them you will see I gave an honest opinion without attacking anyone & was called a moron & an idiot. That started the trash talk. So, I hope this works both ways & attacks on me will be discouraged for simply giving an opinion.
Peace to you Bro’

WhereHaveUGoneJohnnyU?
I had a rocky welcome to this blog yesterday. I was called names & taken off for a short while. I apologize if after the trash talk began I broke any rules or hurt any ones feelings. I am very sincere about this & will keep comments from being personal.
I am born, raised & living in Baltimore. I am also a Steeler fan. I hope that does not disqualify me from membership here. I am also a Colts fan. I find it hard to root for the Ravens. I don’t base my support for a team on mere geography, a team must earn my loyalty. The Ravens have yet to do that. Am I entitled to those feelings here?
I base my feelings on the fact I believe this team lacks character. They have tremendous talent for sure & can compete with any team out there. But for me, it’s not all about winning & losing.
Pointing fingers when they lose, placing bounties on opposing players, trying to inflict injuries on opposing teams & then bragging about it are classless acts in my book & I believe embarrass my home town of Baltimore. Blaming officials, their team mates, their coaches, all things I’ve seen from the Ravens.
I grew up idolizing Johnny Unitas & Brooks Robinson. They conducted themselves as men on & off the field. Maybe I’m just yearning for the golden days of sports in Baltimore, but I believe the Ravens could learn a few lessons from these true Baltimore icons. Where Have U Gone Johnny U?? You are truly missed.

This is a different era. Sadly, the escalating salaries, media and suffocating fans have taken the players away from the reality of the real world have a lot to do with it and to compare it to the far past is just unrealistic and unfair. I understand and support your frustrations in comparison to the Colts and don’t support the whining but all teams do it when they lose, including yes, your Steelers. It’s just that it seems to happen to our Ravens more often.

“to compare it to the far past is just unrealistic and unfair.” So I’ve been told before. Maybe I’m living in the past, but I teach young kids & do my best to teach a higher standard. There are still wonderful role models out there today, it’s just that the hot dogs & thugs capture too much attention. growing up is difficult & we owe it to the next generation to pass on the best qualities of those who have come before us, such as Johnny U & Brooks. I’m not willing to give a pass to a player who acts like a thug. It’s called being an adult.

Johnny U. was a great player
but had sme issues off the field in is rough life compared to what the players get now, both on and off the field, starting with pension benefits, but we don’t want to go there w/o talking to the former Colts Bruce Laird and Tom Matte.
However, as a parent ofthree kids, all sports oriented, I still hope that their role model is me, not any sports figure, no matter how good of a person they are. That’s the problem today and even Charles Barkley said it well, “I’m not a role model.”

role models
whether we like it or not, sports figures are role models & have to carry some responsibility for the violence in today’s culture. Look at what’s going on with the U tube fights, the violence in our schools. Mr MaLor is a great example, following the lead of his role model Ray Lewis & wishing to inflict injury to an opponent during a game. I agree with you it does come down to the parents to be there for their kids & I applaud you for your efforts. I ask you this question in all seriousness & I hope you don’t take it the wrong way. What would you tell your children if they came & asked you if it’s OK to place a bounty on an opposing player? Like Suggs stated in his interview before he realized he would get in trouble for & then danced away from his comment.

Ouch!!
you said it. Too many issues you Steeler haters are dealing with for civil discussion here. I guess you’re trying to bait me or chase me out or whatever. How pathetic when a fan will allow himself to be defined by his hate, envy & jealousy of another team. I guess the Ravens have lost to the Steelers too many times & you can’t stomach being beat down so many times. I have to remember the Steelers are the champs & have handed the Ravens their asses on a consistent basis. So I guess as the Ravens chase the champs & go about their wannabe seasons, year after year, I have to understand that the obsession the Ravens have with the Steelers is caused by your agony of finishing 2nd so often. To the Steelers, the Ravens are just another wannabe team, dreaming of more rings. To the Ravens, the Steelers are a huge hole in your gut that you just can’t stomach for their success & the constant beat downs inflicted. This is my last post. Don’t let the hate eat you up. 3 & 0 against the Ravens last year. GO STEELERS!!!

See this is where we are different. I LOVE this about our team. I LOVE that each and every team in the league hates us because of this. I can only hope this is trash talk & you don’t really feel this way. OK, Big Ben has beat the Ravens, I think the record is 6 & 2. Last years 3 losses must be hard to stomach but to wish a career ending injury on a rival QB is extreme by any reasonable standard. The Ravens have modeled their team after the Steelers, media is comparing Flacco to Big Ben. They play great games against each other. I don’t understand this kind of hate in SPORTS! It’s a game! Steel Curtain here long before Raven way
Bruce, C’mon Man, Steeler football has been around longer than the Ravens have been a team. Steel Curtain goes back to the dynasty years of the 70’s. Strong defense while running the ball down their throats. The model is the Steeler team of the 70’s. I’ve had the most die hard Raven supporters acknowledge that fact. I’ve heard Raven broadcasters acknowledge it. Of course, it’s just my & their opinion & you are entitled to yours, but the model of play the Ravens have built their team around has been around a while, & it’s called Steeler football.

No. I think it’s winning Super Bowls ;-) 4 in 6 years! Todays Steelers, 2 in the last 4 years. Ravens way is to fire the QB who helped win you your only ring & replace him with the only QB I ever saw sit on the bench & cry! If you want to take the 1970's route, ...
I’ll trump you and take the 1958 route, or ‘59 or ’69-’70 Colts teams. I was talking about the recent players who watched the Ravens be one of the first teams to ever win a Super Bowl basically on the shoulders of its defense. Even Pittsburgh, with all their rings, didn’t do that.

it's too easy
I’m trying to stay away, I’ll be banned soon enough, but I’m having too much fun dealing with the purple pantied cheerleaders here. My apologies to those seeking fair discussion, but I will defend myself when insulted & attacked, merely for not supporting my home town team thru their purple colored lenses. I wish all of you the best, sincerely. Peace Guys!!
