Why the Ravens will beat Denver........
If you have followed the ravens over the last decade, they have always struggled with the elite quarterbacks. Peyton Manning comes to mind first. Tom Brady, Carson Palmer and a few others for a day. Jake Dehlomme, last year. My point is, the very stong arm Quartebacks that make pinpoint throws seem to carve up our secondary. Even the good teams with pretty good quartebacks. Chad Pennington last year, Donovan Mcnabb, Tony Romo, and even Kerry Collins who slowly picked us apart could not sling the ball into tight spaces through our secondary. Ok. Where do we rank Kyle Orton? Middle of the pack at best. I do not believe Kyle Orton can beat the ravens. Yes they are 6-0. But that surley isnt because of Orton. I think Orton will throw at least 1 pick, maybe 2. When the ravens win the turnover battle, Who Wins? Arent the Ravens like 70-5 when they win to battle? Therefore I see Ravens Winning. 24-16

I think we turn it around against Denver. I saw some team bonding against the Vikes. I think we are gettting closer to playing as team and players getting used to their roles. It might be the game we have it all together.
Some things we need straightened out:
1. No Edwards in pass coverage LOL.
2. Landry needs to tackle.
3. CB’s need to get between the ball and receivers and not climb backs. Favres bomb was in the air for 60 yards and the best a faster Walker could do was climb Rice’s flippin back. Turn the hell around.
4. Protect Joe.
5. Stop screwing up the 2 minute drill.

Landry
Did you see the way Bronco’s tight-end Scheffler exploded against the Whale Vaginas whenever a safety was forced to cover him? I hope there’s some scheming going on in Owings Mills to make sure our safety is a lot stronger than he’s been these past few weeks…

Landry is certainly "strong" enough
but he is just out of position and can’t make the tackle when he’s standing 10 yards away from the receiver every time. He has looked lost but then again when Ed was out a few years ago (Landry’s 2nd year), Dawan looked lost w/o Reed. Hmmm…wonder how a good Ed Reed makes an average safety next to him look so good. If Ed ups his game and we get any semblance of a pass rush, the Dawan along with the rest of the secondary will look a heck of a lot better.

It was a play on words from our “strong safety” being so far out of position. I would never question a professional football player’s manhood seeing as I don’t even bench the bar (my drink would spill). I did it again. Sorry.

that's a good point
it’s like watching a movie just once for a film class. you watch it again and on the second time you notice things you missed earlier.
Like I was too hard on Foxworth and not hard enough on Fabian. Foxworth did get exposed vs. cincy but really only on long plays. When the plays were short enough (in terms of time) foxworth is a serviceable cover corner. But Fabian these last two weeks has jumped out at me on second viewings. He gave up a lot of quick short routes against cincy and let’s just say against Minnesota, they didn’t bench him without reason. He was backing so far off WRs you would’ve thought he’d taken the over bet on Sidney Rice’s receiving yards.

For the most part, Foxworth is on the opposing team’s #1 receiver while Fabian is on their #2. Not apples-to-oranges comparisons.

all the more reason its inexcusable how Fabian played on sunday. Foxworth played like he had something to prove, which was good to see (although his performance wasn’t perfect). But Fabian? come on

i really liked lewis’s game on sunday after watching the replay. i blame him to much when pass coverage breakes down. he made 1/2 dozen freakish hits sunday. that goal line stand was unreal and ray had two huge hits. how weard looking was rays sack on favre. favre seriously looked like a rag doll. its was pretty comical.

The Broncos will be similar to the Pats
They’ll try to force the long ball to Marshall (Yes, Orton can do it). If you take that away, he’ll go under to Gaffney and Royal.
I like you chances stopping the run. If they bracket Marshall, that should take him out of the game. Orton is innacurate enough on the long ball, that he shouldn’t throw into double coverage. Pressure on the line is needed on Gaffney and Royal.
It should be a good game.
The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

yeah but to jump on Bruce's bandwagon
it’s PASS RUSH PASS RUSH PASS RUSH.
that needs to improve over the bye week and we need to give WRs less time to beat our CBs. While our CBs do need work, they aren’t worse than a lot of other duos in the league who’ve given up much less yardage, with the reason being that the QB has to throw sooner and doesn’t have as much time to let his routes develop.
If our pass rush comes out against Denver and looks even 50% better than it has, it will screw up their gameplan royally because they’ll be watching tape of a team that gives up 5 or 6 seconds before a QB has to worry about getting hit. If that happens, it changes all the routes Denver will want to run against us because they’ll need to adjust to routes that develop much sooner.
Problem is this: i saw the stat of the Broncos second-half performance in games. It would seem as though McDaniels is quite the student of his opposing coaches, as his team has outscored opponents by some absurd margin in the second half. I don’t have the number off-hand but Dilfer was harping on it the other day on SC and it was an impressive difference.
The best thing for us is that the bye week has to help a team on a 3-game skid more than it can help a team on a 6-game winning streak.

coaches watch the other coaches calls on key plays. like 2nd and 4’s. cam will almost always run on 2nd and 4. the ravens are also never ready for the run after a big penalty. teams always seem to hustle to the line and rip off a sizeable run. i think those quirky things prepares a coach for the 2nd half.

You're right
I always seem to think the Ravens line up for the play a little too late to get set for the snap. I guess it’s on purpose to not give away the scheme until the last minute but they may be hurting themselves more than confusing the offense.

Greetings from Denver, all.
Bronco fan here, but will openly admit that as my sig testifies, I am much more knowledgeable about baseball and hockey than I am about football. That said, I frequent www.milehighreport.com quite often and am constantly amazed at the amount of knowledge John, the MHR Staff and the MHR contributors are consistently able to impart upon the community.
I can’t wait for this game! For the Broncos, I think it’s yet another test against a quality opponent. But snikin, I must disagree with your assessment regarding Orton. While I look forward in the next 12 days to reading much back and forth between the two fan-bases, I can say without hesitation that to expect the Broncos to lose because of turnovers, especially Orton interceptions, might indicate you haven’t seen many Bronco games this year.
These aren’t the 20008 Broncos with out previous “strong-armed franchise” quarterback (and no, I’m not trying to open that can of worms again). Kyle Orton has thrown exactly 1 interception all year—and it was a Hail Mary pass at the end of the first half against the Patriots. He has been quite efficient at getting rid of the ball when all options are covered. But he hasn’t been one to try to force the play and end up with the INT, especially in the opponent’s Red Zone, like us Bronco fans saw last year.
This years’ Broncos aren’t about just one player or position. Yes, I’ve always heard that today’s NFL is a “quarterback-driven league.” But the Broncos are all about the team. One of Coach McDaniels’ favorite quotes has been “we took advantage of what they(the opposition) gave us.” The coaching staff has done a very good job at game planning so far, and the 2nd half adjustments have been phenomenal in every game so far. The Broncos have been dominant in the 2nd half of games all year.
Take care, should be a fun couple of weeks. I can’t wait to see how the Broncos and Ravens match up. Ed Reed scares the crap out of me.
Love Flacco’s game and the ex-St Louis Browns (Orioles) will always be my favorite AL team (the amount of loathing and hatred for the Yankees and Red Sox I posess cannot be adequately expressed….).
Blues. Cardinals. Broncos. Rockies (when not playing St. Louis!).

You're exactly
right – the Broncos don’t beat themselves, unlike the Ravens. Furthermore, I’ve been impressed with the way Orton has been playing. This should be a good test for our Ravens. Suffice it to say, this is pretty much a mid-season must game for our Birds. You guys can afford a loss; the Ravens can ill-afford another setback. We’ve had good luck playing at home against the Broncos in the past – let’s see if it continues.

Unfortunately for Baltimore
Good luck against Denver in the past….has certainly not helped anyone else this year. I mean the chargers have had our number since 2000 or so giving up only 1 real Victory….if you can even call it that. But they didn’t have what it took last week. This by no means is an attack on baltimore, and I fully intend to Drive up from Va to catch the game….if anyone has two cheap tickets I’m looking to scalp some at the game……but would be open to taking offers here lol. (don’t mean to be a jerk, just really wanna see my boys play you and don’t have a lot of money) but I expect a great game, and its one I’ve feared all season.

Thats also
what SD said. We can’t afford to lose. We need to win. They had a bye and their backs to the wall and lost by 11. granted I give Baltimore much more respect in terms of overall playability than the Dolts. But Orton has not thrown a legit INT this season (can you really argue that since his only one is to Randy Moss?) so I don’t see any way possible that he throws 2 against you guys. I’d give 1 is possible, and a legit 1 at that. But if we don’t fumble, and don’t throw a pick……I just don’t see you getting the V. or W if you prefer.
Denver has the #1 D in the game right now, and second half is a complete shutdown. I’m sure you all have seen that we have only allowed 10 total points in the second half this season. One TD in the 4th in game 1 and 1 FG in the 3rd to SD. I won’t say NE is playing as elite as they have in years past….certianly missing their OC…..but I do believe that beating them gives us hope at beating any single team this season. We most assuredly won’t go undefeated, but I don’t see us losing to anyone outright. and I love that.

Good post snikin2, and Rec'd
Just a couple questions/observations for some Ravens fans. Regarding Flacco, who is VERY impressive for a sophomore…How is his mobiliy? He seems like a pure pocket passer? If so, this game could come down to QB play…one way or the other. Look, both front sevens are incredible…so, which QB can make plays under pressure should determine the winner of this game.
I don’t see turnovers…either way, being a factor.
I think we may have a slight edge in the running game, but that too will be a challenge against your front seven.
Oh, and snikin…don’t look past Kyle as a “middle of the pack” QB, he has been getting better and better every week…and can pick you apart.
Lets talk, Ravens.

in his first game flacco ran for a 39 yard TD
so while he’s not especially agile, once he gets his momentum going he can actually eat up yards at a surprising pace. What is more important though is that he’s vastly improved his pocket movement since the Pats game. I was on him for that, but against Minny he was much better at feeling that blindside rush and stepping up to buy that extra second in the pocket.
I was telling people before this year not to be surprised if Orton went out there and had a good year. he was serviceable at Chicago with an extremely questionable WR corps, and now he’s in Denver with a much better O-Line and a beastly WR group. Not to mention he’s been much better at changing ball speed and such, as trent dilfer was showing me the other day.
I think the obvious mismatch is going to be our anemic pass rush vs. your O-Line, and your receivers vs our CBs. Marshall’s size is especially worrisome and we’ll probably need to bracket him.
What you guys should look out for is Ray Rice, who might be the most dangerous man when the ball is in his hands who you’ve played thus far. Without him, Cincy and Minny win by much larger margins.

Agreed, Jack
Actually, I didn’t want offend…but you said it first. Your pass-rush against our O-line is a huge advantage for us. Kyle could be eating sandwiches while progressing through his reads. Additionally, with the exception of your safety play…your secondary is porous. We do have a lot of weapons for Kyle to look for, and honestly…with our O-line, I don’t understand why we aren’t putting up 45 on everyone. I’m happy with our results, although we tend to be pretty conservative.
Ray Rice is a stud…trust me, McD is game planning him as we speak.

Actually, no they're not
Get YOUR facts straight. Orton has played really good and your team has done great, but win here in a tough environment and we’ll give3 you your props and respect. Until then, we think we’re better than our 3-3 record and plan on beating you next week.

Actually, this should be a good game.
We are undefeated right now, however this game will not be a cakewalk. Flacco is playing with poise. He never gets flustered. If we don’t get him to the ground with the blitz, he is going to pick apart our team like Brady did in the first half of the patriots game.
I do like our chances on the defensive side, but Ray Rice and Flacco scare me.
On offense (ravens defense), I’m pretty worried. The only reason that the ravens have been dismal statistically on defense is because of big plays. Adrian Peterson had a bunch of yards, but if you take away his runs of 20+, he averaged about 2 yards per carry.
The broncos have not had a lot of big plays. We have had a few short passes that turned into long YAC and a few run plays with Buck breaking free, but for the most part, we have relied on consistent yardage pickups and 3rd down conversions to keep the offense on schedule.
I do not think that the ravens are going to give up a lot of third down conversions.
This will be a tough football game for both teams. The winner will certainly have earned it.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
by kentuckybronco on Oct 23, 2009 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
unfortunately for us,
we haven’t been great on 3rd downs. We’ve had our moments, but it hasn’t been the traditional ravens feeding frenzy that the NFL is used to seeing on 3rd and long. Your O-Line will hold our pass rush at bay and Brandon Marshall will garnish Dominique Foxworth’s salary.
That is, unless, we can revitalize the pass rush during the bye week. We need to force you guys to play from behind and DO THE LITTLE THINGS RIGHT. Tiny little mistakes can cost games!

Another Bronco fan here
Since this is your site, I thought I would give my 2 cents on the Bronco’s weaknesses. If you want to see our strengths, check mile high report, it’s loaded with info or ask another Bronco fan as I’m sure they will be happy to oblige.
Weakness #1- Short yardage problems. We have trouble with short yardage 3rd downs. I think both teams have stellar D’s so I really believe clock management will win this game. With that in mind, 3rd conversions are critical to keep the clock ticking and we have not done well running on 3rd and short.
Weakness #2- Screens and passes to the flats. Rice scares the crap out of me for multiple reasons, but screens and flat passes will be where he shines against the Broncos. We’ve had trouble with them all year and the Chargers really exploited it early in the game last week. I believe both Heap and Rice will have good games.
Weakness #3- Special Teams No, I did not forget the two amazing plays by Royal last week. I just think one good week is not enough for me to declare our Special teams problems fixed. Before last week , we really struggled with getting a good field position. Because I believe this will be a close, low scoring game, Special teams will play an important role.
So there you have it. Of course I still think the Broncos will win, but the Ravens stand a chance if they can exploit these things.
by rollinthunder on Oct 22, 2009 6:28 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Welcome to The Beatdown
Fair assessment and I’ll pass this on to the Ravens. Do you think the Broncos would still have won w/o Royal’s success at returning those kicks? The score would have been a lot closer without those TD’s but what makes you think you would have pulled it out w/o the Special Teams’ play?

Always an excuse
Week after week Bronco haters find an excuse to why the Broncos won!! Kinda funny their D is ranked #1 in the NFL.Whats ur excuses 4 that? There a good football team and some fans cant exept that.. That to bad Cuz they are not going to fall apart and just means ur love 4 the game isnt true. Just bad sportmanship on the part of bad fans. That is not adressed specificaly to u Raven fans just fans in general!!

I think the Broncos are for real
I picked them to beat both the Cowboys and Pats. I have Marshall and Dumervil on my fantasy team and said they’d be as good w/ Orton as they were w/ Cutler. But they were an 8-8 team that choked big time last year and while UI thought they’d fight for the AFC West, I was not expecting THIS – and neither were you or any Denver fan.
So yeah, you are for real, as a fan of the Ravens and in another division, we’re not “haters” just opponents, and since we’ve pretty much always beaten you here, regardless that it’s a different year, we believe we are a better team than the 3-3 record shows and expect to win Sunday. Not gloating or hating, but just a confident fan. However, if we lose, we are gracious and respectable and you will see us on your site giving you the props you deserve. Hope you guys do the same as Mile High Report is one of the best on SB Nation. See you next week!

Nope..
Pretty sure it’s where Flacco will be after 4 quarters of pain.. lol
Looking forward to this game.. two good teams both coming of a bye.. both play tough, physical football with agressive D.
I have really like what i have seen from the Ravens on Offense this season.. Cam seems to be doing a really good job.. and Flacco is playing great in only his second season..

4 quarters of pain?
I feel good about our pass protection, since Oher only allowed one sack to Jared Allen (and it was on a mistake play where he didn’t even initiate contact) and Gaither will be back. Add to that a dangerous screen game with Ray Rice and your pass rush will become more hesitant.
Cam Cameron isn’t Norv Turner (just ask the SD bloggers, heh). If the screen hurts you, he’ll keep doing what hurts you.

Yes those screens have been a problem for us at times this year..
You feel confident in Cam’s play calling.. I feel confident in Nolan’s ability to adapt and bring pressure in many different ways.. If we can at least reduce the time Flacco has it will limit the long ball.. plus our secondary is awesome..
This is just one part of the chess match that this game should be.. after a looooong bye week i can’t wait for game day!

Interesting question
The “what if” game is a slippery path, but I’ll try my best to answer your question. IF Royal hadn’t scored twice on returns, I believe we still would have won and here’s my reasoning
A) our defense would have had some much needed time to rest and strategize. B) After the game, many of our skill players on the offense mentioned they had trouble getting a rhythm going early on because they simply weren’t on the field that much. C) Unlike his mentor, McDaniels is only interested scoring enough points to win the game. Once the game is strongly in our favor, we become very vanilla in play calling on the offense. Had we been behind, I think the play calling would have been much more aggressive.
by rollinthunder on Oct 22, 2009 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Probably right
you would have found another way to get enough points as you’ve done that every game and you just have to win by one point.

less time for SD offense too
and the game was one by 11 points, almost 2 tds given wed score on one of those O possessions
wed also play differently in the second half, more aggressive, point hungry

Without a doubt, these are two solid teams
I think it would be foolish to underestimate either team. I remember an interview with McDaniels earlier this year, he alluded to the fact that he planned on making several changes and additions to the offensive play calling during the bye week. I’m very curious to see how that plays out against the Ravens. You guys are the first of three teams (Indy and Philly) we will really have play hard against to pull out another W.

When it comes to the Ravens their are certain teams we can beat and certain teams we can’t. Take for instance we the Titans and Texans just an example and of course we know we will beat the Raiders. Then there is the Dolphins just to name a few and on a good day we can beat the Steelers too.

Depends where the game is
So many of these games are decided based on where the game is. For example, if you play the Steelers in Denver, I’d take you. But if the game’s in Pittsburgh, I say you’d lose. We’ll see about this and that game soon, huh?

broncos – 24

You wouldn't like it here.
There are these huge mountains that block the view of the horizon. Then there’ s all kinds of snow and then the sun comes out for days and days and can make you go snow blind. My house is miles from the nearest town. Rabbits and deer and the occassional antelope get into the garden and the coyotes can keep you awake at night. In the nearby town we have bears (not the ones from Chicago) wandering around town and getting into the trash.
I tell you it’s just awful.

my friend got the iPod application that lets you listen to police radios. We were channel surfing, from Detroit to DC (where I live) to Baltimore. While we heard our fair share of mayhem going on in Detroit, when we tuned in the Baltimore, LITERALLY the first thing we heard was “shots fired, shots fired.”
Note on Detroit: We heard the dispatcher explaining to deputies en route that the situation consisted of “four men in a green ambulance threatening to shoot up a house.”
just repeat that out loud and see how it sounds. “Four men in a green ambulance threatening to shoot up a house.” Amazing. Can we just sell low on Detroit and let Canada have it?

North Ave is gutter but my boys live down by Aisquith (near the BP station, u KNOW?) and while I wouldn’t pick any fights with the locals, it’s not the worst place in B-More I’ve been to. I would not count on Orton throwing picks
In response to your comments regarding Orton, and esp the expectation that he will throw 1 or 2 pics – don’t hold your breath.
Orton is not going to scare you with 60 yard lasers down the field, but he has been great at avoiding turn-overs and efficiently managing the short-passing game. He has exactly 1 interception this season, and that was a late hail mary (Randy Moss actually got the inteception:)).
Looking forward to a tough-fought game, and hoping for 7-0!
