Suggested Remedies
Even in the victories, the defense's short comings were glaring. I believe radical changes are needed to give us a fighting chance down the stretch. Here are some thoughts.
Webb should replace F. Washington
Gooden should replace Landry
Ellerbee should replace Gooden
Kruger/McKinney should replace Pryce
The trade deadline is today. My thinking is that they either go after a cornerback or a wide receiver. Both if possible. This team has proven it can compete with the best in the league. If the defense had only played marginally better, they could be undefeated. A few changes and a key trade might make us just good enough to win those nail biters and put us in the playoffs!
The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

well if im wrong
but didn[t landry get like three or two inceptions so far so how is he bad he got one on the chargers they have a really good offense i just htink people need to shut up about what we need and have patience for what we got the ravens may need another cornerback but these things happen we do have a new defense cordinatoe and things just have to work out im sure it will

Gooden for Landry?
How can you replace a safety with a linebacker? Who knows. At this point, Im ready to Ngata at cornerback.
Ellerbe impressed me with his open field tackling of AP.
Im not giving up Pryce. They just need to keep a good rotation going.

Yea, Gooden for Landry? How does that work? Rather see Ruki or Zbi back there now.

Gooden could switch to SS
but that’s a position change that takes at least a full offseason to complete. he’d never be effective moving back there midseason. Ruki would definitely be preferably.

I'm not sure about Gooden at SS
According to NFL.com – he’s 6’1" and weighs 242. Don’t know what his 40 is, and he’s obviously in better shape, but I’m 6’3" and about 250 and I’d have trouble outrunning my grandmother after half a block. Isn’t he too heavy for SS?

Let's stop with switching positions as a pro
CB to safety is one thing, as can be DE to LB or guard to tackle. But DE to TE (E. Jones) and LB to SS (T-Good) ain’t gonna ever be successful enough to get in te way of a kid who’s played the position all his career. If Gooden can’t hack it as a LB, then buh-bye, say I.

Slight agreement
in some areas. Agree we need to replace Gooden at LB, with either Jameel McClain or Danell Ellerbe. Landry should sit and try Nakamura at SS and take out Ngata and Gregg on passing down, move Pryce to the middle and put Kruger on the end. Like to see D-Will and K-Wash on the field at the same time. However, Mason still has the best hands and yes, even Clayton still makes the longer plays (Great catch Sunday for TD).

The problem with wild substitutions on passing downs is that teams will game-plan to exploit them over time. Taking out all of the run stuffers is a good idea on third and really long but will make them susceptible to draw plays, which is already a problem.

true indeed
but we need to do something. A pass rush of Ngata, Gregg, Pryce, and Suggs, has yielded poor results. We need to do something.
That’s why I’d like to see some plain-ol 43 defense. Ngata and Gregg in the middle, Pryce and Kruger on the ends. Rush 5 with either JJ or Suggs coming off the edge on 3rd down. Man-to-man coverage with one safety high.
It’s not rocket science but time and again teams have trouble blocking it. I don’t see why we couldn’t do it.

Okay by me, except
Gregg has to be off the field on passing downs and move Pryce inside and put Suggs’ hand in the dirt.

Re: The trade deadline aspect
You think they should go after a CB or a WR. My guess is they do nothing. Ozzie is known as the great drafter, more or less deservedly. That’s where he makes his changes. Seems to me they’ve always had the ego thing going when it comes to trades. Basically, “Oh, a trade? No, I’m sorry. We don’t engage in those…” They always seem to think they have the personnel in place to get the job down, no matter how apparent it is that they don’t. Is it a good, proactive method for dealing with the changing tides of a season – NO. But it is what they seem to stick to. So, I’d say don’t get your hopes up to see anyone new on the active list who’s not already on the practice squad.

We have 3 1/2 hours left
Ozzie is too busy looking at the best players available in the later rounds, so he does not want to give up a 1st and 5th for anyone. Ozzie has never made a big time move for a big time player since TO. Even before that, I cannot not think of anyone???
There are no CB’s out there really that we could trade for and they come in and start. Oakland isnt giving up Ndamdi. Houston isnt giving up Dunta.
So I would like to see us go after Bowe in these next few hours, he would help us put up 48 points while our CB’s allow 45 points.
Go Ozzie!

Mcgahee
I think thats the only really big trade we’ve made in the past few rears
by On3 Man Army on Oct 23, 2009 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And that trade for McGahee is the reason we do not have a big time WR right now. 40 million to an underachieving RB? We could have just used Musa Smith for 2 more years and went after Boldin or some other big name.

Why stop there?
We sent Gano packing to the UFL where he scored the first points and currently holds the distance record with a 53 yarder. Hey, just because he kicks in Vegas, doesn’t mean he has to stay in Vegas…

hee hee hee…
I agree that Ellerbe should get a shot. I’m not a Gooden fan. He reminds me of Tommy Polley (a little lean to be a LB). I’d like to see Kruger and JJ as book ends on passing down. Maybe Sluggs should be a run down guy along with Price?
by raven on Oct 20, 2009 1:03 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Gooden made a GREAT play when he chased down Peterson from behind. It ultimately saved the touchdown. Gooden is a good linebacker to have around, especially if the Ravens continue to run the 4-3 looks. He’s definitely fast enough to play a 4-3 outside linebacker. There is no doubt that he’s wicked fast.
I agree that Ellerbe is the better inside linebacker. I just think that Gooden is useful in certain looks and sub packages.

Chasing down a guy who just burnt the defense
is not a great play. stopping the guy from breaking the run in the first place is a great play. Pursuit is just effort after the screw up!

agreed
i think what he’s saying though is that Gooden has value in a rotation but not as your starter, which we all seem to agree with. I’d go for some more Ellerbe.

Very simple fix to ALL defensive problems
Trade for Julius Peppers NOW!
Adds huge difference to pass rush; defenses can’t double Suggs, makes QB’s get rid of the ball quicker and less time for our CB’s to lose their assignments. Peppers makes everyone better right away.
Trade and re-sign Peppers to a more cap-friendly deal and we go to the Super Bowl – NOW!
No other moves necessary.

A first rounder for Peppers?
Does not sound Ozzie like. Draft picks to Ozzie are like the new bike that Johnny got on your street and is showing off. He loves them too much to give them up. I honestly feel that Ozzie thinks a rookie in the first round is better to have than a guy in his prime who has dominated at his position.

Never said a 1st rounder
and besides, with Peppers being Franchised and still due $12 million for 2009 and a FA after the season, they wouldn’t get much for him at all.

I was just going by what I heard from others
Adam Schefter was talking about the Cowboys maybe making a move for Peppers for a first round pick, so I figured that would maybe be our offer as well.

I actually think Webb would be a good replacement for Landry.
Fast, Aware of most of the field, and tall enough to go after the ball. I tried this in Madde’10 5 INTs in one game.

And when I played with the saints
I threw 7 TDs to Reggie Bush. And Lost. True Story.
I saw Webb try to arm tackle this guy named Adrian Peterson on Sunday, and that Adrian guy kindof broke his tackle. So um… he could use some work before we go throwing him in at SS. I could see him at CB or Nickel, but they need to work on that tackling…

What’s with McCrary. He’s been sitting in MaLor’s section the past 2 games. Poor guy is trying to enjoy his Bud and there’s a line of dopes blocking the aisle entrance trying to get in his grill. The 2nd game McCrary moved deeper into the section and away from the aisle. Smart move. Regardless, get the man some seats on the fity or in Bruces bling box..

Thanks for the offer Bruce. I do appreciate it but I have to sit in my seats to make sure my “guests” don’t get too drunk and cost me my PSL’s. Gotta keep an eye on those friends of friends…

Actually, what I like about my Club Level Section
is that it’s made up of real fans who have been there for years. They stand and cheer and just don’t sit there like the other sections who complain if you stand or cheer too loud. We look over a few sections and see everyone just sitting there and golf-clapping. I got a pair of extra tickets for my daughter and they moved over into our section because they said it was too boring in their “nicer” section.
