Ray Rice = Best playmaker in NFL.
I think the Ravens finally figured out what they have in Ray Rice. A dynamic NFL playmaker. Please give the ball to Rice 20-25 touches a game. I have been saying this to friends for weeks. Sorry Willis, Your pretty good, but you are not Rice. I would also like to see Rice lined up more in the slot. He is a receiving threat like no other back in league, except maybe, Tomlinson. I think also Ravens need to run the Hurry UP offense more. I see a Indy type offense when they do. Personal mistakes. Biggest offseason mistake. JIM LEONARD. WE MISS YOU.

Super point. I said this all year last year. If we had given the ball to Rice against Pitt we take 2 of 3. When he touched the ball in those games he ripped off big runs only to be benched again.

To be honest
You might be experiencing the exact same WTF sentiment us Vikes fans did in AD’s rookie year. AD would come in, rip off a 70-yarder, and then get 2 carries the rest of the game in favor of Chester Tailor. Its almost as if NFL coaches are trying to see if young starts are for real by making them prove it or something. I think it is idiotic. Play Ray Rice more eh?

Huh?
Game 1: 1 rush 0 yds 0 recs
Game 2: 0 rushes 0 recs
Game 3: 1 rush 2 yds 3 recs 43 yards
0 big runs, and 1 big rec (22yds)
Nobody ran on the Steelers last year. Not even Ray Rice.

see, we didn’t even get him the ball in the first 2 games. 3rd game he averages 14 yards a reception on screens. proves my point just fine. if we used him in the first two games in that way we take 2 of 3. he was ready before his injury but not used.

He didn’t touch the ball and had 0 big runs. Only a 1 big rec.

His point was that we should have given him the ball more in those games. It’s an interesting thought, but Rice simply wasn’t the same player last season. He bulked up over the off season and is running with better vision. Last season, he was still a weapon in the passing game but wasn’t running like he is now. I’m not so sure that he would have made a difference in the Steelers games.
Now… this season is another story all together. I can’t wait!

I can’t wait either. Should be great games, although both defenses don’t look as good as they were last year. Both offenses however…should be good.

yeah he was also a rookie. and now we’re getting him the ball via the passing game much more often. James Harrison better get used to chilling in flat zone coverage when we play you guys. I’m not saying he can’t do that, but flacco has been good about dumping to the blitzing side to Rice, which has often resulted in big plays.
I’m not saying your defense can’t handle Rice, since your defense can handle most of anything, but you’ll be facing a far more developed Ray Rice and Joe Flacco than you remember from last year. The numbers from those games won’t continue.

I never argued against any of this. I was responding to the fact that raven said he had big runs against the Steelers last year when he did not.
Ray Rice is a very good player, probably not the best play maker in the NFL, but he is a special talent. I’d expect Timmons to be watching Rice more than Harrison will be.

That would be a mistake IMO
As solid as Timmons may be for you all right now, I am not sure if a LB in the league right now besides a hand full could contain Rice. Now, the guy I am worried about handling him is Troy. Troy is the only DB in the league that I see go right at the player for the tackles. He makes Ed Reed look like a kicker trying to tackle people the way he flies at RB’s and other offensive players.

I don’t think LeBeau will use Polamalu to spy Rice, because he is too dynamic in the middle of the field confusing the QB.
We shall see in a few weeks.

Agreed
Troy will not be assigned to any one player as that would take his main strength away from the team. A LB will probably be assigned to get Rice out of the backfield before he gets up to speed, but then he’s gone.

Webb was looking good on kick returns against the Vikings.
It’s safe to say that he’s taken the job from Carr.

now let him take nickel
I think we need to start experimenting with our rookies on defense. They’ll make their mistakes a fair amount I’m sure, but honestly they can’t do much worse than the current guys getting PT have. I mean Kruger on passing downs couldn’t be a downgrade from our current pass rush, and Webb can’t be much worse in coverage than Carr has been.

how is cribbs a better playmaker than ray rice? AP obviously has the higher status at this point, but aside from him Ray Rice has been nasty so far. A very dangerous man when he touches the ball and whether he gets it on receptions or carries, he hasn’t really been shut down yet. He had a better game than AP did on sunday.
also i figured it was a given that we weren’t comparing him to QBs, just ball carriers.

Cribbs is the better kick returner
but Rice is the better runner and pass receiver. With so many more touches in those areas, Rice is way more valuable than Cribbs. However, I’ll gladly take Cribbs off of
Cleveland’s hands and put him back there to take all KO’s and PR’s.

how can you be upset with the Oher pick?
the guy is a rookie and had Jared Allen flustered and defensive on the radio trying to explain away his 1-sack performance. Any time he made contact with Allen, he won. The guy looks like a home-run pick. And don’t tell me Yanda is just as good—most of the pressure in the Minny game came from his side. Oher might be the frontrunner for ROY this year.
Ozzie is turning into Al Davis.
are you serious? Our 2008 draft class is carrying our team right now. Tell me where the similarity with Al Davis lies.
Plus, for the 2009 class, we haven’t even seen what Kruger and Webb can really do, and already Webb has contributed on ST and Oher may have just stolen Gaither’s job at LT.

give OZ a break. it took him 10 years to find a Qb and he still hasn’t landed a receiver outside of Mason in that time.
besides, a new CB probably woudn’t get in the game and sit the bench like Kruger and McClain while our pressure deflates.

Ozzie’s strategy has been the same from day one…
Draft the best player available and fill needs via free agency. It works, but when there are busts, it really hurts. I wouldn’t say that Foxworth is a bust… yet. He still has time to pull it together, but the slow start certainly isn’t what everyone was expecting.

While I agree
that that’s alway been Ozzie’s stated philosophy, I’ve noticed in the past few years that the majority of the people we draft just mystify me. Lately, it seems to be multiple people at the same positions where we already have competent representation. I watch the draft and the first two rounds usually make sense, even if they’re not particularly in response to what I think we need. Then if I miss the later rounds, I look at the recap and sit there going “Why did we need another (fill in the blank – RB, TE, OT, G) when we just drafted a supposedly great one in the first round or when we already have a young league leader on the team?”. I don’t get it.

I don’t necessarily get it either, but I just trust the fact that the man is a better talent evaluator than I am and he’s built every winning roster we’ve ever had. Also, our CB talent has taken a shot due to misfires on FA signings he’s made. The man isn’t infallable, but his overall track record indicates a man whose career as a GM is characterized by far more successes than failures.

No
Didn’t say wtf for Oher. That made complete sense. My point was that Ozzie has certain “go to” positions that he drafts whether there’s really a need or not. Since the 2000 draft, we’ve drafted 11 RB (incl. FBs); 11 WR; 7 QB; 10 LB; and 7 Safeties; 7 Tackles and 7 C/G. A LOT of these draftees are now elsewhere or never where.
In that time, we’ve drafted 5 CB. Only one of whom (Webb) is still on the team. Is it any wonder our CB situation is lacking?

Yup
Everyone says that Ozzie is so great at drafting players, which he is, but it happens to be 1st rounders mostly. He does well with first rounders because he just plugs them in next to Ray and they flourish. I love that stat, some Oz he is as of RECENTLY. He made some amazing picks in our first 4 years, but since then, everything after the 2nd round has been lacking.
11 WR is funny considering that has been our weakest position next to QB in team history. You would think the “wizard” would eventually get it right and get us a #1 WR to build with. Not a 5’10" guy (Clayton). I am talking 6’3" guy who can’t be covered 1 on 1. Then again, sometimes you have to give up draft picks to trade for those type of guys. And you know Ozzie would rather make 17 O-Lineman and 13 OLB since 2000 in next year’s draft than go after Boldin, Marshall or Bowe.

While I disagree
with some of the people you’ve included there, short of Yankees-like spending and a no-cap season, there are no teams that I can think of in the league who have more than a handful of above average players. The majority of the rosters for most teams are average (if they’re lucky) – that’s why they call it average. Remember, FreeAgency and the cap were meant to stop the construction of a dynasty and a team made up entirely of the best talent money could buy.

I’m still holding out for Foxworth. He showed real improvement versus the Vikings… especially in run support.
His improving play has been overshadowed by the horrible play of the rest of the secondary. Did anyone else notice that he shut down Berrian all game? Besides for the TD catch when Washington was covering him, Berrian had a quiet game. I still cannot understand why Mattison didn’t have Foxworth cover Sidney Rice later in the game. I guess it’s a game of pick your poison at this point. Whoever is being covered by Washington or Walker is going to have a career game.
