Ravens Miss FG, Lose Heartbreaker 33-31

Photo

More photos » by Tom Olmscheid - AP

This one hurts even more than the others. To come back so well behind a great offensive showing in the fourth quarter in just another game that the Ravens defense could not stop the opponents, only to miss a very make-able field goal that would have prompted an incredible celebration, only to lose our third straight game at the very last moment.

Post your frustrations all you want, but we are still so close and might get back on track if the defense could only make at least one timely stop for a change of pace this season. Kudos to Joe Cool, his wideouts, including yes, Mark Clayton and a great day by Ray Rice behind a tough o-line that never gave up.

The most irritating thing about that missed FG

is that he shouldn’t have had to make in the first place.

Fuck Anaheim.

+1

The defense is just straight-up bad; there really isn’t a way to sugarcoat it anymore.

The secondary is bad, the defensive line is bad, or at least severely under-performing, and the linebackers can’t cover the pass.

The next to last defensive series was real good

when we got a 3 and out to get the lead changing TD. Why couldn’t we do that more than once the entire game or when we needed it at the end?

I’ll give you a hint. Don’t look at the very top of the lists.

It’s the personnel this year. We just don’t have the players to be a elite defense.

Agreed, Stover was kinda scary

outside of 40 if he could even get it that far. Gano, on the other hand would’ve nailed it as he had the nerves coming from FSU and Hauschka looked like he was about to throw up before the kick.

Its time to clear somet things out

During this bye week, Baltimore really needs to step back and evaluate our team and what direction we want to go in. Samri Rolle will be able to practice for the 1st time in six weeks. Hopefully, we can active him off the pup list and insert him as our nickle or maybe even as our starter. Our DB’s are terrible! On the play action pass in the redzone to their T.E., Dawan looked as if he didn’t wanna cover the guy. Frank walker may be cut after this game and we may need to fire Mattison. I really don’t understand why he even made him or D.C. after one season with us as our LB coach. Hopefully we can get this team going again

Agreed

He looked like he was about to puke and I also saw the fear and nervousness in his eyes. While I also think it was too far for Stover, that’s all you’re gonna hear next week. I liked Gano and still think he is the better kicker and was in camp but never got the chance to prove it in pre season and missed the few attempts he had. But he played in the ACC for FSU and made some great last second shots which is great practice for the pros.

Even though they were only a missed FG away from taking a lead with :02 left. But I’m sure Favre would have thrown a TD if they made it, so it doesn’t matter.

6 tackles and a sack

He’s no Joe Thomas, but maybe someday. I still feel like he got away with some pretty bad holding calls.

And you might want to read up about the Kevin and Pat Williams on the suspension issue before you start going off about that.
1) Its been a long held supreme court decision that collective bargaining agreements won’t stand over state law.
2) The bumetanide was not listed on the label of star-caps, so they obviously took the stuff and tested it themselves and then used it to cover up the steroid use, right?
3) I am sure you do not know more about and do not better understand the case than the justices of the Hennepin county district (that means federal) court (please don’t tell me ANY judge would rule in favor because he is from their home town… no possible way they would risk their entire career for two players on a sports team, that argument does not fly) AND 3 judges from the 8th District court of appeals.

Sorry, Bruce, but I needed to clear that one up.

Mason needs a sidekick and that player may very well be Ray Rice in the passing

game. Mason is the lone ranger in the wide receiver group. Sorry Bruce, even though Clayton made great grab for the touchdown, that doesn’t negate his absence through three quarters.

The defense…..oof! We saw glimpses of their dominance at the end of the first and through the second quarter. Thereafter, everything just crumbled. Yikes! Mattison needs to do more blitzing because this defense isn’t good while on its heels. I don’t think the Ravens tried to do bump-n-run coverage during that game. Mattison has to mix up the coverages to at least slow the development of plays. The defense has to get more much aggressive. The penalties are killing drives and sustaining them on defense.

Being aggressive on defense is probably the one change that could turn things around. The Ravens have to add talent to the receiving core and the secondary.

And I’m still on the Matt Jones bandwagon!

Fuck matt jones

The only catch D.Williams made through out the entrie game was a great diving one. We need to get this guy on the field more often. Also, Cam needs to work on his play calling through out the 1st half of a game. For the pass 3 weeks, we’ve started off really slow but finished hot. same with our D. We gotta start closing out games. This goes back to last year with Rex. And even with Rex, we would at least have a big league in most of the games we played. D needs to step it up big time.

Vikings fan

I was hoping the Vikings we would lose this one so the media would talk about our poor coachingand bad secondary. Up by 17 we should have lost this one and the Ravens fans should be proud of your QB. Good luck with Denver your team will be rested & pissed.

Pittsburgh won’t even try to run it next week

3-3 is not a good look.

I Tried to tell Ozzie, lol. Make a blockbuster trade but he wasnt listening. Everyone is blaming the players. i blame Cam, because for the last 2 to 3 games if the defense seemed remotely tough, they came out scared. Before this losing streak began, the ravens was said to be dominating on offense. Today along with those other games, they came out as if brian Billick and Kyle boller was there. they need to attack instead of having some kind of pedestrian-like offense. They need McCalister back asap.

by Raven_all_day on Oct 18, 2009 7:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Face the facts

C-Mac is gone forever as he is still hurt and no one wants him. Cam is not on the field and not the problem, as we scored enough points all these weeks without the Red ZOne INT’s that Joe threw the past two weeks and certainly enough to win today,

Defensively, the players aren’t making the plays as it’s not the DC that makes the difference and even Rex couldn’t do much with this secondary.

Yeah! A moral victory. Did you see how close the game was?

Wait. for a second there I was parroting the pathetic line the Orioles fed us all year.

Joe Flacco i and Ray Rice are fun to watch. The secondary is painful to watch. They’re (almost) always a step behind. It’s not going to be easy to fix. It’s tough watching a team good enough to come up just short against the league’s better teams.

Im sorry I havent been able to chat it up with my boys here at the Beatdown much this week, school and work are getting the best of me. But I wanted to pop in before bed and remind all of us to keep our heads up, with 5 division games left to play we are far from out of it. Keep it cool men.

Raider fire sale rumors true?

Has anyone else heard that rumor? I’ve read, and can’t find it now, that the Raiders have pretty much said internally everyone but 5 people( Russle, McFaddin and three others i can’t remember) are on the block.
I think its time for Oz to suck it up, admit foxworth and washington are good but not good enough and bring in Asomugha in the bye week. I remember in the article seeing that since his money was guaranteed the Raiders pay the bill for most of his cap space. Is this true anyone have the resources to know how that deal would work out?

Ravens

Great game tonight, great defensive adjustments in the 2nd quarter (I think we started getting shut down before the 2nd half began).

Very good plan exploiting the secondary after Antione Winfield left the game (turns out he means about as much to us as Troy Polamalu does to the Steelers). Karl Paymah did not stand a chance.

Ray Rice is to be feared! I have not seen my Vikes gouged like that in a long time, and FYI his rushing TD’s are the only the Vikings have given up this year. So he broke the code that no-one else could for the first five games… twice. Beast.

It was VERY weird being on the receiving end of a goal line stand. I have seen the Vikings do that several times, but it was surreal when you start to realize that you are not going to get that one yard.

Great game, I really hope things pick up for the Ravens. Beat the piss out of the other NFC North teams! Love the football your guys play and was sad on a personal level for the kicker. That can’t be easy to deal with.

I am with Shines, you should keep your head up, at least the Bengals lost, its still anyone’s division. Maybe you all should root for the Vikes to beat down the Steelers next week? Eh? Eh?

That was a hell of a game no matter how you look at it. What I thought was a easy win was a damn near myocardio infarction. My Dad and I noticed one thing: Zero turnovers. You guys have nothing to be pissed about besides two AP runs and who ever you decided to put up against S. Rice. A heck of a game my friends. I would totally not be surprised to see you in the playoffs. I expect you to win your division still, I have mad respect for the Ravens. Good game.

Thanks man. Its our M.O to lose like this. It’s not bad luck or calls or fate or the way the ball bounces like Ray lewis says. It runs deep. Ray Lewis and Ed Reed continue to give us nothing in big games. Where’s Reed on these deep balls? Maybe Reed needs to be a DB and start having reponsibility. He avoids all blame because he hawks for the INT and escapes criticism.

Ray Lewis is useless in the pass. He should just vacate the middle and blitz because he isn’t worth a damn in shallow secondary. With 2 straight 100 yard rushers, I’m not sure where he is.

Cam again went to the Clayton jump ball on the last drive to waste a play when Rice was chewing the Vikings up. Rice should have gotten the ball by air and run once we got to the 40. We had barely sniffed field goal range when Cam settled into chuck and duck. We even burned a play by spiking the ball. That may have not been necessary if we took back the to deeper balls to Clayton and Mason that failed.

Cam tightened up, took his foot off the gas and put the game on a very young and inexperienced kicker. The snap was poor to top things off and had the kicker out in front.
Cam plays loose when the game is a mismatch or out of control. Put him in a pressure situation and he turns into a chicken.

The secondary flat out stinks. Walker held his mans jersey on Favres last deep ball for 10 yards when he simply needed to disengage and step in front of the ball for an INT. That ball was in the air forever and he played the receivers back. A joke.

I didn’t need to watch this game. I know this team. I know what Ray Lewis will say after the BIG game as he expects divine intervention and chalks it up to “that’s football”. No dude, you flat out can’t win THE BIG GAME and haven’t in 10 years. If we continue to walk Lewis’s walk and talk Lewis’s into the Flacco era we will be mistaken. This teams D has been bad for a few years now. They have been handed victories every other week and shit on them.

I guess that’s football or the way the ball bounces or official’s calls or Gods way.

Kicker Blows Game

Offense adjusts. Defense adjusts. Frank Walkers sucks. Kicker loses game. How’s that for game analysis???

next step forward

The Ravens are so close now I feel for the purple faithful. I thought Harbaugh was the coach to help the team make that next step to being an elite team, but after watching his leadership the last 3 weeks I’m having 2nd thoughts. I like his aggressive style of offensive play but it ends there. The best way for a coach to help his team is to get them to play their best. Harbaugh is failing at that & the team is moving backwards. His face shows frustration when the team performs poorly & he looks incredulous when calls go against them. We have enough cheerleaders, we need a coach who calls out players when they hurt the team & reign them in when they act like children. In the last few weeks Harbaugh has shown that he has given up his leadership role with the Ravens to Ray Ray. He’s fallen into the ‘Everyones out to get us & it’s us against the world’ Baltimore self pity. Playing like champions, like a truly elite team is something Baltimore has found hard to accomplish. Right now I believe they have no one to lead the way.

Why do so many blame

everyone other than the players? You’re giving the coaches WAY too much credit. The coaches coach and the players play (thank you Brian Billick). The players have not executed on defense and that is the reason. Period!

You know what is interesting

This year Ravens vs. Steelers might be a display of offense instead of defense. That will be odd. With both defenses looking questionable this year, the 5th and 7th ranked offenses could make it very high scoring.

Look at the elite teams

Bruce, if you look at the elite teams you see a championship character that translates to championship play. Great coaches create, then lead great teams. Some teams & fans never learn this & wallow in the pack. Quoting Billick only proves my point, he failed as a coach. It’s not all about play on the field, preparation is the key to success. Part of that preparation is not just the X’s & the 0’s, but transforming players into champions. I question Baltimore’s ability to do that. Answer me this, would you trade Harbaugh for Billichek?

I doubt the change in coach makes a difference on this team with the current personnel. Besides, offense makes highlights, defense wins championships.

As a Vikings Fan...

that game was just as sickening to me as it was to you guys. There never should’ve been a shot at a FG to win the game. Our offense and defense had dominated that game up until that point. Two weeks in a row the vikes got off to a hot start and almost blew the game. Not only did we do this vs the Pack, but we had shut down SF for 99.9% of the time as well and we almost lost THAT game (Brett Favre is a saint).

I expected to lose this game anyways, but when we jump ahead that much and we’re up 30-17 in the 4th quarter, no team should ever be allowed back from that. It was the vikings who blew this game, not the Ravens. I though Flacco was awesome. That guy is a stud and you’re lucky to already have a franchise QB playing as well as he is.

If I were the Ravens I wouldn’t be worrying about that last missed FG, I’d be working to fix the defense and get the offense going earlier in the game. You played a tough vikings D in the dome so it’s to be expected not to come out hot out of the gate vs them.

Good luck down the road, you still have a shot at the division.

Vikings didn't win? Not the game that I saw

Minnesota totally dominated the game for 3 quarters, then,as has been their recent history, let up defensively. I am not denying that the Vikings were lucky that the Ravens missed a very makable field goal at the end of the game, but PLEASE,this game would have remained a blowout had Minnesota’s defense not let up.

And if we made the FG,

what would people be saying today?

We played terrible defense but our offense came through and if we continue to play ike this then we will win the division. If that is true, then we must be pretty close, eh?

We can win the division BUT we need to change the personnel on D. We need a number 2 LB with experience. We need a DB. Gooden and Walker are way to inconsistant and out of position. I’m sorry but I just don’t see Gooden’s value…yet.

Thank You!

I just want to say thanks viking fans for your positive support. I have always had mutal respect for the vikings and hey your colors are cool. I believe in my Ravens and I predict that they would win, but I think we are in a bitt of a funk. You really can’t blame anyone it is a team effort and it takes team spirit and playing ability to get there. Sure I felt like someone punched me in my gut, I am over it looking forward to next week’s game. I honestly don’t care to much for this new defense coorinator, I can only hope our defense can do better. We really can not afford to loose anymore games. I know the Ravens don’t to be in a wildcard position they need to secure themselfs for a playoff spot. My guys need there mojo back.!!!!!!
