AFC & NFC Players of the Week

Thanks to NFL.com, the nominees and winners of the Players of the Week for both conferences are below. Winners are selected for offense, defense and Special Teams. The AFC is listed first and the NFC is right after the 'Jump.'

 

BRONCOS QB KYLE ORTON, STEELERS LB JAMES HARRISON &

BROWNS P DAVE ZASTUDIL NAMED AFC PLAYERS OF WEEK 5

Quarterback KYLE ORTON of the Denver Broncos, linebacker JAMES HARRISON of the Pittsburgh Steelers and punter DAVE ZASTUDIL of the Cleveland Browns are the AFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the fifth week of the 2009 season (October 11-12), the NFL announced today.

OFFENSE: QB KYLE ORTON, DENVER BRONCOS

  • Orton completed 35 of 48 (72.9 percent) passes for 330 yards with two touchdowns versus one interception and a 96.7 passer rating in Denver’s 20-17 overtime win against New England. 
  • Orton’s two touchdown passes came in drives that covered 98 and 90 yards.
  • He completed 6 of 10 passes for 76 yards on Denver’s 98-yard TD drive that tied the game at 17 with 5:21 remaining in the fourth quarter. 
  • In overtime, Orton completed 4 of 6 passes for 31 yards and led Denver 58 yards on 11 plays to set up a game-winning field goal by kicker MATT PRATER
  • Orton helped Denver post a 5-0 record for the first time in 11 seasons (1998). 
  • In his fifth year from Purdue, this is Orton’s first career Player of the Week Award.  He joins JAY CUTLER, JOHN ELWAY, BRIAN GRIESE, GARY KUBIAK and JAKE PLUMMER as the sixth Broncos QB to win the award.

 

DEFENSE: LB JAMES HARRISON, PITTSBURGH STEELERS 

  • Harrison recorded eight tackles, three sacks, two tackles for loss, two quarterback pressures and one forced fumble during the Steelers’ 28-20 victory over the Detroit Lions
  • Harrison’s three sacks totaled a loss of 24 yards (4, 14, 6).
  • Harrison has recorded five sacks and forced two fumbles in the past two games. 
  • He has 34.5 career sacks and a team-best six sacks in 2009. 
  • In his sixth year from Kent State, this is Harrison’s third career Player of the Week Award.  Harrison last won the award in Week 11 of 2008.

 

SPECIAL TEAMS: P DAVE ZASTUDIL, CLEVELAND BROWNS

  • Zastudil punted nine times for 386 yards (42.9 average/42.1 net) and placed seven punts inside the 20-yard line. 
  • His seven punts inside the 20-yard line tied JOSH MILLER for third-most since the statistic was first recorded in 1976. 
  • Zastudil is the first punter to register seven or more punts inside the 20-yard line since Jaguars punter BRYAN BARKER in 1999 (8 against Baltimore on 11/14/99). 
  • He was part of a special teams unit that limited the Bills to seven punt return yards.
  • His final punt in the fourth quarter was fumbled on the Bills' 16-yard line, and recovered by the Browns, leading to the game-winning field goal with 26 seconds remaining. 
  • In his eighth season from Ohio, this is Zastudil’s first career Player of the Week Award.  He is the first Browns punter to win the award since KYLE RICHARDSON in 2005 (Week 9).

  • Cincinnati running back CEDRIC BENSON, who rushed for 120 yards (4.4 average) on 27 attempts with one touchdown in a 17-14 win over the Ravens.
  • Indianapolis rookie wide receiver AUSTIN COLLIE, who totaled eight receptions for 97 yards (12.1 average) with two touchdowns in a 31-9 victory over Tennessee.
  • Miami quarterback CHAD HENNE, who completed 20 of 26 passes (76.9 percent) for 241 yards with two touchdowns versus zero interceptions and a 130.4 passer rating in a 31-27 win over the Jets.
  • Cleveland running back JAMAL LEWIS, who gained 117 yards (3.8 average) on 31 attempts.
  • Indianapolis quarterback PEYTON MANNING, who completed 36 of 44 passes (81.8 percent) for 309 yards with three touchdowns versus one interception and a 109.2 passer rating. 
  • Pittsburgh quarterback BEN ROETHLISBERGER, who completed 23 of 30 passes (76.7 percent) for 277 yards with three touchdowns versus one interception and a 123.9 passer rating.

  • Baltimore safety ED REED, who registered six tackles and a 52-yard interception return touchdown in a 17-14 loss to the Bengals.
  • Cleveland linebacker KAMERION WIMBLEY, who registered 11 tackles and one sack. 

 

Other nominees for AFC Special Teams Player of Week 5:

  • Pittsburgh kick returner-running back STEFAN LOGAN, who totaled 138 return yards.
  • Denver rookie safety DARCEL MC BATH, who posted four tackles on special teams along with one punt downed at the Patriots’ four-yard line.

CROMARTIE & PANTHERS P JASON BAKER NAMED NFC PLAYERS OF

WEEK 5

Wide receiver MILES AUSTIN of the Dallas Cowboys, cornerback DOMINIQUE RODGERS-CROMARTIE of the Arizona Cardinals and punter JASON BAKER of the Carolina Panthers are the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the fifth week of the 2009 season (October 11-12), the NFL announced today.

OFFENSE: WR MILES AUSTIN, DALLAS COWBOYS

  • Making his first career start, Austin had 10 catches for a franchise-record 250 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning 60-yarder in overtime, in the Cowboys’ 26-20 win at Kansas City. 
  • His 250 receiving yards eclipsed the previous team record of 246 yards set by Pro Football Hall of Famer BOB HAYES in 1966. 
  • Austin, who scored the game-winning TD on a 60-yard reception in overtime, is the first player in NFL history to score an OT touchdown in his first start. 
  • His 250 yards are the most ever by a player in his first start and he is one of only three players in NFL history to reach the 200-yard plateau in his first start, joining ANQUAN BOLDIN (217 yards in 2003) and MARK DUPER (202 in 1983).  
  • In his fourth season from Monmouth, this is Austin’s first career Player of the Week Award.
  • He is the fifth Cowboys wide receiver to be named NFC Offensive Player of the Week joining KELVIN EDWARDS (Week 5, 1987), Pro Football Hall of Famer MICHAEL IRVIN (four-time winner), ALVIN HARPER (Week 9, 1994) and TERRELL OWENS (Week 11, 2007).   

DEFENSE: CB DOMINIQUE RODGERS-CROMARTIE, ARIZONA CARDINALS

  • Rodgers-Cromartie, who played with a cast on his right hand due to a broken finger, had the game-winning touchdown on a 49-yard interception return late in the fourth quarter of the Cardinals’ 28-21 win over Houston. 
  • With the score tied at 21 and the Texans driving with 2:30 to go in the fourth quarter, Rodgers-Cromartie intercepted the Houston pass at the 49-yard line and raced to the end zone to put Arizona ahead for good.
  • It marked the longest game-winning interception-return touchdown in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter since 2004.
  • He finished the game with three tackles and two pasess defensed.  Including the postseason, he now has eight career interceptions, including two touchdowns. 
  • In his second season from Tennessee State, this is Rodgers-Cromartie’s first career Player of the Week Award.
  • He is the 12th different defensive back in franchise history to be named NFC Defensive Player of the Week.   

SPECIAL TEAMS: P JASON BAKER, CAROLINA PANTHERS

  • Baker punted four times, placing two inside the 20-yard line, and helped set up the game-winning score in the Panthers’ 20-17 win over Washington. 
  • In the fourth quarter, with the Panthers trailing 17-12, Baker’s punt was muffed and recovered by Carolina’s DANTE WESLEY at the Washington 12.  Two plays later, running back JONATHAN STEWART scored to put the Panthers ahead for good. 
  • For the game, Baker had a gross average of 44.8 yards per punt and a net average of 44.0. 
  • He had a long of 52 yards and allowed just three yards on three returns (1.0 average). 
  • In his ninth season from Iowa, this is Baker’s first career Player of the Week Award.
  • He is the eighth different player in team history to be named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

  • New York Giants running back AHMAD BRADSHAW, who rushed for 110 yards on 11 carries (10.0 average) and scored two touchdowns in the Giants’ 44-7 victory over Oakland.  He also added a 55-yard reception. 
  • Seattle quarterback MATT HASSELBECK, who completed 18 of 30 passes (60.0 percent) for 241 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions for a 125.1 passer rating in the Seahawks’ 41-0 win over Jacksonville. 
  • Philadelphia rookie wide receiver JEREMY MACLIN, who had six catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns (51 and 40 yards) in the Eagles’ 33-14 win over Tampa Bay.
  • Philadelphia quarterback DONOVAN MC NABB, who completed 16 of 21 passes (76.2 percent) for 264 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions for a 157.2 passer rating in his first game back from injury.
  • Atlanta quarterback MATT RYAN, who completed 22 of 32 passes (68.8 percent) for a career-high 329 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for a 110.0 passer rating in the Falcons’ 45-10 win at San Francisco. 
  • Atlanta wide receiver RODDY WHITE, who had eight receptions for a franchise-record 210 yards and two touchdowns, including a 90-yarder.
  • Tampa Bay tight end KELLEN WINSLOW, who had nine receptions for 102 yards and two touchdowns in the Buccaneers’ 33-14 loss at Philadelphia.

 

Other nominees for NFC Defensive Player of Week 5:

  • Minnesota defensive end JARED ALLEN, who had two fumble recoveries, including a 52-yard touchdown return, two tackles and a pass defensed in the Vikings’ 38-10 victory over St. Louis.
  • Seattle rookie linebacker AARON CURRY, who had a team-high nine tackles, a sack and a forced fumble as the Seahawks posted the team’s second shutout of the season. 
  • Carolina linebacker THOMAS DAVIS, who posted eight tackles, two tackles for a loss, a sack and a safety.
  • Carolina defensive end JULIUS PEPPERS, who had four tackles, three quarterback hurries, two sacks and caused a safety. 
  • Philadelphia cornerback ASANTE SAMUEL, who had two interceptions and four tackles. 
  • New York Giants defensive end JUSTIN TUCK, who had six tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a tackle for a loss. 
  • Tampa Bay defensive end JIMMY WILKERSON, who had six tackles, a career-high three sacks, a forced fumble and one pass defensed. 

 

Other nominees for NFC Special Teams Player of Week 5:

  • New York Giants linebacker JONATHAN GOFF, who had four special teams tackles and helped the Giants limit the Raiders to minus-two punt-return yards. 
  • Carolina kick returner KENNY MOORE, who had three returns for 89 yards (29.7 average), including a 55-yarder.
  • Seattle punter JON RYAN, who placed two of his three punts inside the 20-yard line and had a 44.7-yard net average along with a 44.3-yard gross average.
