Colts Sign Matt Stover
With the announcement that Indianapolis Colts placekicker Adam Vinatieri is out for six weeks (click to see the story on SB Nations' Colts blog, "Stampede Blue"), the Colts have signed former Baltimore Ravens kicker Matt Stover.
Ironically, Stover has had calls from both the Cleveland Browns and now the Colts since his release from the Ravens after playing his entire career with the Browns/Ravens. Most people thought he would play again, but to go with the Colts is a bit of a surprise. Knowing Stover's distance is way off and even his accuracy was on the downslide compared to the old "automatic" Stover, I guess we'll get a chance to see what he's got left in the tank.
With mixed feelings, good luck Matt!
The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

Yeah, Congratulations Matt
Classy guy and he deserves to be able to play if he still wants to. Shame he couldn’t play for something other than an imaginary team, but still…
And no, I refuse to believe that the Colts existed after leaving Baltimore. Nope, no gonna do it. La la la la la…

Yeah, congratulations Matt
You guys are sore losers…stfu already about the Colts leaving your city, it wasn’t them, it was their owner’s forcing them to go (The Irsays). If you want to be mad at anybody, be mad at the Irsays, not the Colts, or their fans, or the city of Indianapolis!

Very good Sonny
You managed to join a whole different blog and everything to post your two hit and run replies. Now get on back home to Indy. It’s time to milk the cows and breed your mother again…

If you read the post, it said...
…we were not mad at the city of Indy or the fans, but at the Irsay’s. The article was based on the ESPN documentary, which is the ONLY reason it was brought up, which is relevant. If you didn’t see it and have nothing to say, then don’t.

Good for Matt
Hope he makes the best of it. When we see the Colts in the playoffs, he better not pull a Vineteri from 2006 and kick 5 field goals to beat us while our offense can’t score a freaking TD. Man that game sucked…..

you said it
Yea, It took me more than a year to get over that game, and it still makes me sick thinking about it. I was so distraught after the C**ts won the superbowl, I almost considered not watching football.

you said it-reply
Your just belly achin’, along with all the other Baltimore Raven fans, because the Colts left your stinkin’ town, and the fact we have the greatest quarterback that ever lived in Peyton Manning, who is breaking all kinds of records yearly along with those of the then Baltimore Colt’s Johnny Unitas!

Do you mean the John Unitas
whose records, accomplishments and memorabilia are stuffed under the INDIANAPOLIS Colts’ banner in the Pro Football HOF because there is no BALTIMORE Colts area there? Oh yeah, that one.

Hate to tell you this...
but the greatest QBs that ever lived have Superbowl rings. How many does Peyton have? While I commend him for being a great man and a great player, it’s the championship that matters, which Peyton unfortunately can never get to.

you must be real young
because peyton won the superbowl in the 2006-2007 season after beating us in M&T.

So then you're saying
Dan Marino was not one of the best? Sorry, can’t agree as football is a team game, which proves that we can win a Super Bowl w/ Trent Dilfer!

Touché
I stand corrected. completely forgot about that superbowl. I do love Peyton, but it was hard to see clearly when someone has the balls to come over here and talk shit about our team, and have his name as Ravens suck. My bad, my bad.

week 11 could have playoff implications
i’m just sayin…….
by WARDANE33 on Oct 14, 2009 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
though week 11 is into the range where Vinitieri might return
They said 4 to 8 weeks, which puts him as week 9 to 13.

I'd rather play against Matt than Adam.
We know the Colts won’t be trying those 40+ yard FG’s w/ Stover.

Go Matt! Great guy and Ring of Honor due. I hope he kicks lights out. I bet he’s till automatic (almost) within 40.
by raven on Oct 14, 2009 5:56 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
No way, perhaps inside the 30
but he was far from automatic inside the 40 last couple of years. Try around 83%, good enough for 23rd in the league in accuracy. Won’t matter as Peyton will just have to make sure they score TDs instead.

I want them to use McAfee for long fieldgoals,
he has a massive leg, was the #1 kicker in the nation coming out of high school and kicked for 4 years at West Virginia (only punted for 2).
I hoped to see it in preseason and even while Vinatieri was healthy, but it probably won’t happen since he’s punting, kicking off and is the holder for FG/XPs. Maybe with Stover’s limited range they’ll give it a shot. They got a bye week to get Sorgi practicing holds again.

STOVER - CLASS ACT
In my tenure as a Baltimore sports fan, and that is going on some 30+ years now, Stover ranks right up there along with Brooks R., and Cal R. as one of the most revered figures in Baltimore sports history. Best of luck, Matt; just don’t make any kicks when the Dolts come to play.

Stover up there with Brooks and Cal? Hello, McFly,…he’s a KICKER!!!!

No kidding; but he was as well respected as either of those two sports icons, and he is argueably the most valuable Raven since that team landed here.

as well respected as cal or brooks?
ummmmm….. I’m speechless… I’m just gonna drop the blockquote on you…

If you’ve followed the Ravens over the years, you know that Stover was as valuable to the Ravens success, as was Cal or Brooks to the success of the Os – you can’t deny that, and, if you do, then we’ll have to agree to disagree. But one thing is certain, he is held in very high esteem within the Bmore community.

Yeah, extremely well respected
and valuable to this offensive-starved team. But the equivalent of Brooks or Cal, what about Johnny U.? Uh….nope.

yeah you can be a lot of things. You can be a great athlete. You can be the highest scorer on a superbowl team. You can be a class act. You can be well respected. But Cal and Brooks are in another league. Walk down York Road, walk down Charles Street, walk down Pratt Street, walk down O’Donnell Street, walk anywhere and ask anybody if they put stover in the same league as Cal or Brooks. He’s not even close in terms of status or respect. That’s not a knock on him, it’s just how it is.

moreover,
he isn’t close to them in terms of athletic dominance. Stover was a very consistent kicker for his whole career, but he wasn’t THE MAN amongst his contemporaries and teammates. Cal and Brooks were the epitome of that.

And Stover wouldn't even be
the top few Ravens anyway! Ray will be way above Stover, regardless of what a great guy Matt was. It’s about hwat you did on the field and as good as he was, he’s still a "freaking’ KICKER!
