An Apropos Ending

What an amazing game! It showcased all of our strong points. McClain and our extra large formation running through a lesser team's front seven like it was wet toilet paper. McGahee breaking off the 48 yard gain with an amazing cut and stiff arm. Flacco throwing the long ball all over the place, making the throws we need to stay in it, and sacrificing his body on that QB keeper for the touch down. A defense turning a supposedly safe offensive game plan into a turnover machine that can't break double digit points. And Sam Koch pinning the ball next to the goal line again and again and again. There's lots of praise to be spread all over the team, but we have all week to get to that. My only regret is the the Ravens came up shy of my pre-game prediction, unable to crest the 30-point mark. I called the Dolphins getting nine points, but I'll admit that the blocked extra point was a (welcome) surprise.

The Dolphins fans came into our house this past week and told us that everybody in Baltimore and the media was wrong; it was the Ravens that would be eating crow come Monday morning. They had some nose guard back from injury that was going to stop our run. They had an improved secondary that was going to make Flacco look like a rookie. They had Joey Porter who was going to sack Flacco at will because he was saving up his energy during December or some ridiculous shit. They had a running back tandem that was going to run the ball down our throats. If there's trash to be talked, they talked it.

But they never backed it up, and neither did their team. Pennington cracked under playoff pressure like a rookie and gift-wrapped the ball for Ed Reed as Chad prayed to a false god, hoping Bart Scott would relent, if even for a little while. The run game was anemic (that means "bad," Fried Raven), with a grand total of 52 yards. We ran it down their throats for 151 yards. Maybe Joey Porter should have brought his mother's walker onto the field with him to help him get to Flacco. Where was your vaunted defensive star? Where was that comeback performance? Where were all the sacks? The man is washed up. He's no Ray Lewis. How embarrassing it must be for Dolphins fans today!

Obviously I'm not the kind of person to come out and be the bigger man. The Dolphins fans came into our blog, insulted us (I'm looking at you, PhinsFanInJetLand), talked shit, and for the most part (excepting rangerjae) refused to back up a single claim with a shred of evidence or argument. Well, the cream rises to the top. It's obvious now who the better team is. And, as always, our blog sticks to our quality-over-quantity mantra. Enjoy your raving masses at the Phinsider as you head into a depressingly bleak off-season, wondering whether your golden child Bill Parcells will stick around to hold your hand and guide you into the post season once again, or move on to his next fixer-upper. Embrace that self-delusion that got you through this past week with a shred of false hope, because September is a long ways off. Feel free to come into our house next post-season and talk about the game like big boys: without insulting our blog, without the general asshattery, and with just a bit of rationale, because karma's a bitch.

And finally, a sincere congratulations to the Miami Dolphins franchise that deserves all the accolades it has received over the course of the season. It was a magnificent turnaround from a terrible 1-15 season to a playoff berth marked by a divisional championship. They are the embodiment of the Any Given Sunday philosophy that defines the NFL, and, for that, I am thankful. I hope they are able to continue their climb during the draft and free agency during the offseason and remain contenders in what will no doubt be a tough AFC East next season.

And just a little fun fact:

Cam Cameron has won twice the number of games in Miami this year as he won last year. Congratulations, Cam!

Nice to see what he could do with a team that plays...

the way they are capable of.

Good Game!

Just wanted to stop by and say good luck.

Until we have to face you guys, I always enjoy watching your team. You got an ace in Flacco. The rook was smart and tough.

See ya next year,

Thanks, snook36. Best of wishes to the Dolphins in the off-season. I’m sure Parcells will work more of his roster magic if the rumors are true that he’s staying in Miami.

Some post game thoughts

Leonard played his best game of the season. Not only the pick, but the way it seemed like he was all over the freaking place, from making sacks, breaking up screens, and tackling.

Ngata nearly killed their top receiver on that block on the Ed Reed pick six. With his two interceptions for the year…how the hell did he not make the Pro Bowl???? (Side note…Have any of you guys seen the home video of Ngata playing pee-wee rugby? Its both the funniest and scariest thing in the world. He literally looks like a giant with toddlers trying to tackle him. What parent in their right mind let them play against him?)

Ed Reed….was Ed Reed.

Flacco is freaking amazing for a Rookie. How many times is he going to show up in high pressure situations and look like he is playing a back yard pick up game. He’s got calmer nerves than a bomb squad guy.

Bill Parcells is, in my mind at least, the greatest football mind of our generation. No one has turned around more teams than him. Seeing his ability to fix disorganized franchises, maybe the city of Baltimore could get him to be mayor. More amazing is that contract that he signed with the Dolphins. As long as they have him in the organization, I do not see this season as a fluke…although their schedule will get a lot tougher next year.

Sam Koch is a f-ing punting machine. We seem to win the field position battle every game and he is a huge reason. I almost look forward to the Ravens punting.

Good to see the ROY and the Coach of the year make it far into the post season….

They played that video during one of the ravens games a couple weeks ago, and yes, he looked like a giant. What a crazy season that must have been in that rugby league.

The MVP’s team didn’t do so well either. Just goes to show how much those awards really mean. I’d much rather have a great coaching staff and team than one standout coach or player that buckles under the pressure of the post-season. Speaking of which, the last MVP to win the Superbowl was Kurt Warner in 1999 with the Rams.

Eh, flacco looked pretty off to me. 9/25 for 135 yards? Not very good. He did what he needed to do though – no INTs. Even though he didn’t look great though, he looked better than Pennington, Jackson, and Ryan.

Oh, and that rugby video you are talking about is definitely hilarious.

Stats are meaningless

Flacco hit virtually all the important critical throws including that rocket on the sideline to Mason at the end of the first half. A couple of long ones to Clayton were overthrow due to pressure, but he made some key third down passes to keep drives alive and I’ll take that over meaningless numbers after outcome decided anyday.

by Rexx on Jan 5, 2009 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

I agree about Flacco making the passes we needed to keep our drives alive, but I’d really like to see him connecting more often. We’re going to need that consistency down the post-season stretch. I’m hoping that it was just his first playoff game getting under his skin a bit and that he’s more accustomed to the situation now as we head to Nashville. Considering that our defense is playing so well, if we can get our passing game up to par with our running game, there’s no reason at all we couldn’t expect to have a shot at winning the Super Bowl.

Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.

by Ampallang on Jan 5, 2009 11:25 PM EST up reply actions

Saying stats are meaningless is bullshit Rexx, and you know it.

by steelguy99 on Jan 5, 2009 11:32 PM EST up reply actions

one thing about some of his numbers...

If the play’s not there he throws it away instead of trying to force it, like he may have done earlier in the season. On several of those deep plays that were “overthrown” it is my opinion that was his way of throwing it away. Instead of throwing it short and to the sideline he was just trying to keep the D honest and show them that he can throw the ball 70 yards while scrambling. So in that respect those “overthrown” deep balls were more important than throwing it out of bounds would have been.

He was under pressure

on those deep throws and he still winged them downfield and actually overthrew Clayton twice while throwing off his back foot! That was amazing to me!

Since the game was over, I’ve actually praised the Phinsider and many of its posters as being good sports. What I take issue with are the Dolphins fans who came over here and made asses of themselves. They posted their inane trash in discussion threads that had little or nothing to do with the game. Even in the game discussion threads, their posts were garbage with no factual basis. They added nothing to the discourse about the game. I feel like I have to keep repeating myself over and over about this same topic. Come over here and tell us you’re going to win, but tell us how and why you think so. But don’t keep spouting off the ridiculous nonsense that characterized Dolphin fans over the past week.

Ward up

I preditcted the game dead on. Not the score but how we won. I said our D will force turonovers putting or offense in good postion. I also said that we will pound the rock With McClain for 3Qs and deliever the final blows with willis. Great win Baltimore.

Congratulations, I guess. But those are the most obvious aspects of the game plan that we’ve been using for weeks. They might even be considered to be more strengths of our team than aspects of the game plan.

I would have been more interested in knowing how our cornerbacks were going to deal with their extremely efficient passing game if Washington were limited by his toe injury, what would we specifically be doing to mitigate their vaunted pass rush, and what we’re continuing to do to improve our suspect special teams coverage.

How well would we match up against the Wildcat formation that supposedly had new, never-before-seen plays, could we stop their speedy runners if their passing game has us spread out, and could one of these rookie coaches out-coach the other?

Of course, these have all been answered now, but it’s just food for thought for your Ravens-Titans predictions.

by Ampallang on Jan 5, 2009 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly

You come over here and say how bad we are and how we are going to get demolished by joey poorer and chad 10 who is the best QB ever cause he has 7 ints. NO! Dont talk your shit here in Purple Country unless you can back it up, which you didnt.

You Phinsiders came here, talk about deep frying our ravens, putting flacco to sleep, all that crap. We came to your site, gave our predicted scores, said how we could win IF WE WON. You guys just came here, had no valid points, and just kept reiterating how amazing you were and how much u were going to destroy us. Never told us who was going to get you your points, never told us how you were going to stop our offense and our defense.

Enjoy the offseason

At the end of the day...

… the Ravens pwned souls. I love my Dolphins, but they were overmatched by the league’s #2 defense today. It’s not very surprising, however, as the talent discrepancies between these two teams are obvious. Ed Reed and Ray Lewis are as good as advertised, but we knew that for years now. I believe the sting from this game will serve Miami well in the future, as they continue to grow. I would proud if our defense could emulate yours in the years to come.

I’m really looking forward to a Steelers-Ravens AFC Championship game! I won’t like to you though, I hate Cam Cameron. He may call a nice offense, but never let him run your whole team.

Thanks, Daniel52. Our defense is the handiwork of our GM Ozzie Newsome and his stellar staff. With Bill Parcells on board, I imagine the Dolphins’ hey day isn’t that far off. Unlike you, though, I’m not looking forward to that Steelers game. I think most of us fans would much rather play the Chargers; however, I think the players are probably itching for another shot at the Steelers and redemption.
