Mocking the Draft: Ravens Review, Needs and Targets
Hi Ravens fans. I'm shake'n'bake one of the Colts bloggers for Stampede Blue and more relevantly the blogger covering the AFC North for the newly revived Mocking the Draft. I thought it would be a good idea to give you all a look at my initial thoughts on the team and it's needs as well as get you all's opinion on who the Ravens should or will draft (Probably the same thing for a well run organization like Baltimore).
The Ravens shocked the world (minus Ravens fans and the fine statgeeks at Football Outsiders) with a 6 game turnaround taking them from a top 10 draft pick to the AFC Championship Game. A return to greatness by the D (9th to 2nd in DVOA) with a offensive boost from a much improved running game (26th to 9th) and a once again respectable passing game (25th to 19th) spurred on the improvement.
The D's improvement was almost entirely against the pass (hard to improve from the #1 run D). The Ravens pass D struggled in 2007 with Chris McAllister and Samari Rolle missing a combined 15 starts and now #4 CB Corey Ivy being pushed into the lineup as a 13 game starter. In 2008 the Ravens again saw about a full seasons worth of games missed by it's starting CBs (10 by McAlister, 6 by Rolle) but were better prepared this time with the acquisition of Fabian Washington from the Raiders. They also got more from Rolle in both total games a quality of play as Samari has come out as one of the league top CBs in Football Outsiders measures this past season. The Ravens run D remained as one of the stoutest in the league.
On offense the Ravens turned their 1st round pick into an instant upgrade at QB (from awful to competant). The QB play rejuvenated Derrick Mason making him prolific and effiecent instead of just the recipient of 100 McNair dumpoffs. While the rookie QB got more of the attention it was the running game that really got the Raven O moving. The addition of free agent fullback Lorenzo Neal and 1st round guard Ben Grubbs along with the emergence of Le'Ron McClain as a (very good) ball carrier turned the offense into on of the elite short yardage running teams (3rd best) and let them run 10 more times a game with the same per carry average.
The Ravens have 4 starters plus 5th key role player and their both their kicker and punter hitting free agency. Defensive stars Terrell Suggs (the youngest player in the top 35 in sacks among active players), Ray Lewis (the face of the franchise), and (06 Pro Bowl and author of the greatest penalty reaction ever) Bart Scott are unrestricted free agents. Center Jason Brown and Fullback Lorenzo Neal also will hit the market.
As currently constructed (before 08 contracts expire) the Ravens D is pretty well set in the front 7, a bit old and injury prone at the CBs but deep at safety, the offensive line is reaping the benefits of 3 first day OL picks in the 3 drafts before last years (and they could replace Jason Brown from within by shuffling the line when Marshall Yanda returns from injury). They have their QB in Flacco and a 3 headed RB comittee, so it comes to targets in the passing game. Derrick Mason is still productive, but hits 36 this year. Todd Heap doesn't appear to be the Heap of old, but is still productive and shows flashes of what he was, Mark Clayton was a solid deep threat (41 catches for 17 yards per) and there wasn't much after that. Adding targets to continue to build on their newfound (or newly re-found) offensive success is a primary concern.
The Ravens teams needs as I see them are to replace any front 7 starters lost, add a CB to back or replace the older starters and to add targets to improve the passing game.
Mocking Dan the head scout for MtD has
James Laurinaitis, ILB, Ohio State, 6’2, 240
Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State, 6’6, 260
Sean Smith, CB, Utah, 6'3, 210,
Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest, 5'9, 190
Chase Coffman, TE, Missouri, 6’6, 252
D.J. Moore, CB, Vanderbilt, 5'10, 184
Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina, 6’1, 210
Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland, 6’2, 206
Victor Harris, CB, Virginia Tech, 5'11, 194
Clint Sintim OLB, Virginia, 6’3, 254
Larry English OLB, Northern Illinois, 6’3, 254
Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut, 5'11, 187
All ranked in the area around Baltimore's pick. Any you guys particularly like or know aren't a good fit for the Ravens.
What do all you Ravens fans out there think?
The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

Im concerned the most about acquiring a reciever either through free agency or the draft. With our free agent signing’s still in limbo i can’t know our cap space just yet for a free agent. As far as the draft I’m very high on Hakeem Nicks and Darrius Heyward-Bey. Bey is a speedster while Nicks is a between the tackles guy who seems like he would be better prepared for the punishment of the NFL. I like Bey a lot and still is my first choice but for this reason I am leaning towards Nicks a lot more now a days.

Nicks is my guy
The man probley has the best hands in the draft. I dont care if he doesnt run a 4.30 forty, He catchs the ball very well and is a big physical target for Joe FLacco.
FEAR THE NEVERMORE DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Acquire a WR through a trade or free agency, not the draft
I think the Ravens best strategy would be to acquire an already established WR. Wide Receivers take a while develop, when I think the Ravens need one right now. The only one I’d really consider through the draft would be Percy Harvin, and only because I think we could make an impact right away with the “Suggs” package.
I think the best position to draft would be a CB. That is our “weakest” position on defense. It be nice to get some young blood in there.
I dunno
a 6’3" CB sounds pretty tempting to me, if his speed is up to par. That could be huge in the AFC, where passing to big wideouts is a key to defend.

We werent the 9th ranked Rushing team this year
with a offensive boost from a much improved running game (26th to 9th)
?
Werent we 4th?
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
in total yards
All the rankings I used were DVOA from Football Outsiders unless I said otherwise. FO has the best stats out there.
In total yards the jump was 16th to 4th

There's no way we take a TE
at 26. therefore, CB Sean Smith looks fine by me, with a wideout either thru trade, FA or second round.

Heyward-Bey
Cant go wrong with a Terp. I really like Darius Butler, I followed him a lot this season. Looks like a solid football player.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
A lot of people are going to be on the Heyward-Bey bandwagon, which makes sense cause we are usually from Maryland, and everyone loves the local star. I hate the WR high bust rate, which makes me nervous about a WR, especially one who was inconsistent in College. My favourite WR in the draft not named Crabtree is Kenny Britt, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see WRs fall a lot in this draft just like the last one (although DeSean Jackson and Eddie Royal might change minds).
James Laurinitis does not fit in our scheme at all. He really needs to play in a Cover-2 scheme. He just does not shed blocks well.
Corner is a huge need, and Darius Butler, Alphonso Smith, and Sean Smith are all great options. I see DJ Moore as more of a zone corner, and we run 90% man, so that’s not a fit. Alphonso Smith is exciting, and I think he could do well here, but it’s a risk with his size. Sean Smith if his speed checks out and Darius Butler would be ideal fits for our system, the question is whether or not they are good value at #25. Mocking Dan clearly believes that Sean Smith is the witch’s tits, placing him at the 23rd best player in the draft.
The Ravens tend to take the best player available on their board, even if it means not filling needs, and that, according to Mocking Dan, would be Laurinitis at #20 or Brandon Pettigrew at #21. Laurinitis doesn’t fit here, so Pettigrew may be the choice. Ravens fans are mixed on Todd Heap after a second disappointing season. I think he could bounce back, he’s only 28 years old, but we’ll see what the Ravens think. He’s signed through 2011 also, so it’s not like we’d be without him. Plus, Pettigrew is just an awesome blocker, we could run more 2 TE sets if we wanted to, either without a fullback or without a second WR.
Still, Sean Smith is probably the right choice here according to Mocking Dan’s “value” chart, with Brandon Pettigrew being an interesting wildcard. Also, keep an eye on right tackles. Willie Anderson will not be a Raven for more than two years, and the Ravens will draft a replacement if they think he’s the best player.
Heyward-Bey was not inconsistent in his college career.
The type of offense, coaching, and QB that was and is on that Terp team did not blend well with his abilities. Whenever the ball was thrown in Darius’ direction, he made plays, big ones to. There is really no right to say that he was inconsistent, more like the offense we ran was inconsistent and not explosive enough to go along with an explosive WR like himself.
And you say that Alphonso Smith could be a fit here, but did you happen to watch the UMD-Wake game this year. Do you know which WR put up a career high 11 receptions for 101 yards and a TD against Alphonso? Yep, Darius Heyward-Bey and he definitely exposed the weakness that Smith has in size. 6’3" 206 > 5’9" 190.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Alphonso Smith is a risk because of his height
and he’s had bad games against tall WRs before, but he has a lot of ability, and for the most part has played very well. He wasn’t my choice for the 1st round pick, just a valued corner who could succeed in our system.
Cortland Finnegan 5’10"
Asante Samuel 5’10"
Sheldon Brown 5’10"
Just to name a few smallish corners who’ve had some success. It’s hard to do, and I would prefer a taller corner than Alphonso, but he’s consistently been a solid corner this season.
I will agree with you though about the WR bust rate
But it is not as high as people are playing it out to be. Look at the guys that have come in the last 5 years or so, Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Colston, Boldin, Roy Williams, Braylon Edwards, and there are definitely more I cant think of. The thing these guys have in common is their size. All of them are very big WR’s going against these 5’10" CB’s who just cant match up with them.
I know it sounds very biased to hype up Heyward-Bey as much as we are, especially me since I am a current student at UMD. But seeing this guy play in person, seeing him do the things he has done only being a starter on a football team 4 years of his career. (2 year starter in highschool). With the very small amount of time that Hey-Bey has put into learning this game, he has shown some talent man. You combine the track star speed and height with a frame that will definitely fill out 10-15 more pounds once getting into the NFL work ethic along with the huge upside and areas that he will learn to improve on, it is scary.
This is a guy who I think even Flacco cant over throw. Hey-Bey knows how to go up after the ball, he understands how to utilize his speed advantage, and just has so much more room in his game to add new abilities. Besides Crabtree, there is no other receiver who truly has this combination of physical abilities that Hey-Bey has. But go on and tell me why I am wrong.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
WRs taken 20th-30th overall in the past 10 years : Buster Davis, Robert Meachem, Dwayne Bowe, Santonio Holmes, Roddy White, Mark Clayton, Matt Jones, Michael Jenkins, Javon Walker, Freddie Mitchell, Reggie Wayne, R.Jay Soward, Sylvester Morris, Randy Moss.
I’d consider Dwayne Bowe, Santonio Holmes, Roddy White, Reggie Wayne, and Randy Moss to be successes.
Matt Jones, Javon Walker, Mark Clayton are mild disappointments. Javon Walker had exactly 2 good seasons. Injuries yes, but also character issues.
Buster Davis, Robert Meachem – young guys that haven’d done anything
Michael Jenkins, Freddie Mitchell, R. Jay Soward, and Sylvester Morris – There is simply no helping these guys.
That’s five out of fourteen players who lived up to their draft slot. Just over a third. I personally consider a 60% bust rate to be pretty freaking high. 1st round draft choices are SUPPOSED to work out.
DHB could be successful in the NFL, it’s a possibility. But we usually only get one 1st round choice a year, and we really want to hit the success button each and every time. We’re trying to project what we see in Darius to the NFL player he could become. It’s extremely risky. I realize that he has great numbers, and if he learns to run crisp routes and has good hands and picks up all the details of being an NFL WR he will be a very good player, but the NFL dregs are littered with players with DHB’s potential that just never made it. On the Ravens roster there is a 6’3 WR who ran a 4.48 at the combine. Who is this player? Marcus Maxwell. Have you heard of him? Probably not. He’s a guy that the Ravens picked up this season because of all that potential. We’ll see if he makes anything of it, but no-one here is counting on that are we?
I get what you are saying.
But the Marcus Maxwell thing is kind of irrelevant to this situation. I am not only saying I want DHB for his size and speed, which looks to be better than this Maxwell character, but the type of player he is. People have heard of DHB and seen him perform.
Marcus Maxwell is a no body, DHB has made a name for himself.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Yea big difference
Maxwell may run a 4.48 but DHB will run a 4.28 and is just about as tall. Math Geek – You know as well as I that two tenths of a second for a big WR can be the difference between being a star and being out of the league. That comparison does not work IMO but I understand where you were going with it.
Actually, I know that 40 time is extremely overrated
Anquan Boldin 6’-1", 216 lbs, 4.72s 40 yard dash
Roy Williams (WR) 6’-2", 211 lbs, 4.48s 40 yard dash
Larry Fitzgerald 6’-3", 223 lbs, 4.63s 40 yard dash
Brandon Marshal 6’-4", 225 lbs, 4.52s 40 yard dash
I don’t think DHB will run a 4.28, 4.38 seems more realistic, but I really don’t care about 40 times. For every Andre Johnson with a great 40 time and great career there is a Larry Fitzgerald and a Donte Stallworth. to show the two are correlated.
Damn I wish we had Brandon Marshall.
How come we miss out of late round picks like Boldin, Colston, and Marshall? Arent we like the best team in the league at drafting. Oh wait, thats basically only on defense.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Also
Most WR arent going to be running in a stright line for 40 yards. I like to look at there shultt times to see how quickly they can cut
FEAR THE NEVERMORE DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Point Taken
I should have said that DHB has rare, world class speed and explosiveness, which does not come along often, and in his case it does translate to the field. That along with his size and talent make him an intriguing prospect.
I know 4.28 sounds optimistic but I really believe he is going run somewhere in the 4.2-4.35 range, and will have a good chance to be the fastest WR this year. We will have to wait and see.
Remember Yamon's 40 time
he was the fastest 40 in his draft and he’s been real bad this season, only running straight into the guys tackling him – no moves.
Rexx
Yea but do you remember how explosive he was last year?
A punt and kick off return Touchdown, still pretty good. At one time he was leading the league in avg return yards.
I dont know where that went this year though
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Figurs: hauls in a huge deep ball from Flacco and……..got maybe 1 more pass the rest of the year…ie Ray Rice. i may have missed some news clips- has there been a reason for Rice’s lack of playing time while Willis rolled on the ground holding his ribs/stomach, neck 1/2 the year.
I dont know
Maybe because he was injuried for about 4 weeks with a burise. They said it was fine but they didnt play him until the AFC championship game.
FEAR THE NEVERMORE DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!
According to what you say, the coaches don’t have much faith in Figurs returning to form, but you do? What’s the inside info you’re keeping from us?
How about we just keep our safeties doing the returns, and get somebody that can actually help our passing game. Problem solved.
Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.
Buh-bye Yamon
He can only run straight now, and if a short slow white guy can return better than him, it’s time to go.
Rexx
Wasn’t that short, slow white guy rated in the top third or fourth in the league for punt returns? Correct me if I’m wrong, but the number seven comes to mind. It probably depends on what you’re using to rank it, but he averaged 11.6 yards per return. Correct me if I’m wrong here.
Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.
Which is why
I say “buh-bye” to Yamon. You are correct, but I also doubt if Leonhard fits into our cap space strategy either. I’d hate to lose him, but with Ed, Dawan, Zibi and ’Ruki, we are pretty set with or without him at safety. Besides, either Zibi or ’Ruki can return kickoffs and punts.
Rexx
BUT ITS "LITTLE JIMMY LEONHARD!"
Love the guy, I think he is a way better athlete then Zbi and Ruki.
Come on, he was 4th in the team in tackles behind our 3 best LB’s
Pretty damn impressive for a guy who had to come in for a try out.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Maybe
But I have more confidence in a guy who has started in this league for 4 previous years. But hey, if anything were to ever happen, I would be very happy with Zbi coming in for Landry. Ruki plays FS, so he would have to take Reed’s spot, something I never want to see happen.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Ruki is a very smart player
Remember when he tipped off Ed For that 107 yard pick 6. If he learns from ED these next 3-4 years, We could have a replacement with this guy. Zibby…….It’s gonna be hard takin playin time from Dawan. Landry is still one of the best young SS in the game. I believed this was going to be his breakout year till he got injuried. I’ll take him over Jimmy any day, Even tho Leonard had a great season.
FEAR THE NEVERMORE DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!
We should try to see how skinny we can get this part of this blog.
It is getting really small now with all the replies.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
And I will also take Dawan over Jimmy.
I love what leonhard was able to do for us given his tryout he had for this team. He came right in here as basically a nobody and was 4th on the team in tackles. Oh yea, behind Ray Lewis, Terrel Suggs, and Bart Scott. Pretty damn good company for some little 5’8" white boy. Then the punt returns, man, what an athlete.
I would love to bring Jimmy back. He would be such an ideal nickle and dime player for us. And definitely bring him back for punt returns. Hope we can get this guys back.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Come on yall
Yamon had one bad year and you guys want him gone. This is still the same guy who ran back a punt and Kickoff return for TD’s in the same game. Give him at least one more year before you start callin for his pink slip.
FEAR THE NEVERMORE DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think Ray Rice at kick offs. Jim Leonhard at punts.
That is what I have wanted all year. Ray Rice has insane acceleration and agility. He could definitely be a game breaker at kick offs. And we have already seen how Leonhard can dominate punt returns.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
You only said WR high bust rate
You never stated which part of the first or 2nd rounds they were taken. So that is why I included that list. I just think we are scared because of the Travis Taylor story. And no way is Mark Clayton a “disappointment.” Just because you dont put up 90+ catches and 1200 yards every year doesnt make you a disappointment. You make plays when the ball is thrown to you. Can you name me 3 times where we were screaming at our tv’s cause Mark should have definitely made that huge catch. I sure as hell cant.
With the style of football we have played in the last few seasons, there was no opportunities to have that big play WR, we just were not going to throw the ball that much.
In his 4 year career, he is averaging 50 catches, 659 yards, and 3 scores. That really is not that bad of a season average for a #2 guy. Yes, he is no Boldin, or Welker, but he does his job when given the chance. I am sick and tired of people saying he is a disappointment. Sure as hell didnt show it this season. We have also been one of the few teams in this league that relies on their TE heavily, so that contributes to what people think are his “terrible numbers”
Why cant we blame some of his numbers on the SHITTY arms that have come through here. Boller and McNair, come on man, they are the ones who have to throw the ball. And dont bring Boller’s strong arm into this, cause he was terrible most of the time. Is it just a coincidence that we saw the most exciting Mark Clayton season in his 4 season because of a new Off. Coor and the best thing to ever happen to the Ravens besides Ray Lewis in Flacco?
Just try and remember what this offense and Mark had to work with since he has been in the league besides this year. You watch him blossom now.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
When you draft a WR in the first round, you are really hoping for a #1 WR, you’re not looking for someone who’s going to be an average #2. If Mark Clayton was so good, we wouldn’t be talking about a WR now would we? We’d recognize that we have 2 starting WRs and focus on depth at the position. But that is not what we are doing.
I only picked 20-30 because I was too lazy to look at every WR in the first round for the past ten years and wanted a big sample size. I think that the numbers would be about the same if we included the other spots.
We are talking about a WR because besides Mark and Mason, WE HAVE NO ONE ELSE!
Mason is 35 years old, so we need to start thinking of a replacement for him, most likely is going to be Mark. So we need to find someone for his spot, which WILL be addressed in the draft. In no way are we talking about drafting a WR because our guys arent “good” We do not have a 3rd WR that we can rely on game after game.
That is why we are talking about a WR bro. I would take Mark over more than half of the #2’s in this league. You really think a rookie outta the first round is going to come in and be the number 1 over a proven veteran, pro bowler, and one of the best possession WR to ever play this game? I dont think so.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Mark will be Mason's replacement
When he retires. The league is going towards big WR’s and Clayton is not getting any taller. Also, Mason is old, and we need to have a plan in place, which seems to be Mark sliding to Derrick’s spot and the new WR starting on the other side. By picking up a youngin’ now, we will buy a few years for them to grow, and they won’t be thrust into a starting role right away.
Also, when we drafted Clayton, the Ravens had no idea about Flacco. Since we have a strong armed QB, our needs at WR have changed, and we need more studs who can get down the field and stretch the D.
I would not call Clayton a bust or success at this point. He has been average overall, but he still has time to turn it around.
Agree
He does his job when the ball is thrown to him. Again, like I stated earlier, we saw Clayton’s most exciting season this year because of Joe and because of the amazing play calling by Cam.
The Ravens and this offense has never seen such a great mix of talent like this come together in their 13 year history.
Let Mason teach DHB how to perfect his catching skills and let Clayton show DHB how to run the deeper routes. This is so exciting.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
we have 0 receiver threat beyond 10 yards.
oooh, we may sneak a deep ball in here and there but we don’t have anyone to take the light off Mason. Every teams 2nd and 3rd DB have no trouble with our top mid- deep threat.
To be honest w/ you,...
…the wide receiver position may be the most over rated on the field. If the QB is good enough to get the ball to you, most players can catch it in the NFL. If the o-line protects the QB, then he will find the time to find the open receiver. Philly made it to a couple of Super Bowls, only one with TO, the rest with receivers I’d challenge you to name. Same w/ the Seahawks and the Pats as well. Tom Brady could find ME in the open field! So, unless there is still a “Jeremy Macklin” available, I say go CB with our first pick, even if it means trading up or down to get the guy we want. Watch hpw Flacco develops and improves, along with the o-line, and you’ll see Clayton, D. Will and my man Marcus improve exponentially along with him.
Rexx
Philly did only make one superbowl, which was with T.O
But I think this was their 4th NFC Championship they made. I accept your challenge Rexx to name the WR.
James Thrash, Reggie Brown, Greg Lewis, and Todd Pinkston.
Those are the only 4 I can think of besides T.O.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Disagree
Did you see the Giants – Eagles playoff game? If Burress would have played, there is no way the Giants lose that game. The loss of their big play guy made them so much easier to defend, and it freed up the Eagles defender who would have doubled Burress, to load up in the box and stop Jacobs and Co..
its more important to be a good route runner and work to get open. speed and hands are nice but i’ll take the smart receiver anyday.
Like Mason?
I agree I like the smart receiver, but when you have a QB with a cannon like Joe, you need weapons down field for the offense to reach its potential. Of course a combination of both, ala Boldin and Fitz, and Breaston is best.
Sorry, can't agree
Evfen with Burress, Eli still throws the ball away enough for the Eagles to win. Manning played a horrible game and even Burress doesn’t make a difference.

Any chance of us drafting Alex Mack with 1st pick
Jason Brown is a F.A. and if we dont resign him, we could be losing our best o-linemen with no replacement. I guess we could shift Chris Chester back to center keeping yanda at RG, but im not sure if Chester iis the answer. I know he played well in yanda’s absense, but this is the same guy who was pushed into the backfield countless times in 07. This is only if All the top prosepcts are gone. Maybe we Go after Duke Robinson . What do ya’ll think?
FEAR THE NEVERMORE DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think we avoid all that and just resign Jason Brown
Even though we havent heard any talks of re-signing him, at least we havent heard anything about not being able to re-sign him.
I think we will come to realization that he is one of the biggest assets to our team.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
hope your right
Because Jason Brown has become one of the best centers in the league. Also, I would hat to see Chris Chseter go up against the shaun rodgers and casey Hamptons of the world.

Do you see any DE being picked around this slot, because I feel that the Ravens could defiently use another DE

He would be a great fit next to Ngata in our Hybird D. He is big enough to play DT in a 4-3 and he can also play DE in the 3-4.
