Greg Mattison Promoted to Def. Coordinator
Reported by Chris Mortenson from ESPN.com
The Baltimore Ravens have promoted linebackers coach Greg Mattison to defensive coordinator to replace Rex Ryan, sources said on Sunday.
Also promoted was special assistant Vic Fangio, who will become the assistant head coach/defense and coach linebackers, the sources said.
Mattison had been a longtime college defensive coach -- most recently for the University of Florida -- before he joined Ravens coach John Harbaugh's staff prior to the 2008 season.
An announcement is expected shortly. Ravens officials could not be reached for comment late Sunday night.

Right move for the team
Promoting from within keeps the consistency that is so important to the team. This guy hasn’t been with us long but his resume deserves the respect he’s earned in the past year, much less through his previous coaching successes.
Thanks for the post and picking up my slack.

I got you Rexx!
Haha, but yea, I am very satisfied with the promotion. Even though it may be a bit biased, I feel that we have the best front office in the league. Steve, Dick Cash, Ozzie, Kevin Byrnes, all those guys know when they see someone who can succeed in this system, coaches or players. And for our front office to hire Greg after only being with the team for this season, they must have seen something very special in the man. Probably along the lines of the something special that they saw in the previous Special Teams Coor, now Ravens head coach Jon Harbaugh.
Greg must have brought something very unique to the table in his interview that lead them to this decision, and I am very excited to see him get started.
Taking over Rex Ryan is a very tough task to accomplish, but I feel we have the right group of guys to climb that mountain.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Mattison is the right choice.
Here’s what BaltimoreRavens.com says about him:
“Mattison is another strong contender. He may have just completed his first year in the NFL, but the long-time college coach coordinated defenses for eleven years with the University of Michigan, Notre Dame, and the University of Florida. During that span, Mattison has coached eighteen future NFL players, including seven drafted in the first three rounds.”
Here’s what Wikipedia says about him:
“Mattison was a finalist for the head coaching job at Western Michigan University following the 2004 season; a job that eventually went to Bill Cubit. Mattison had served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach under Jack Harbaugh at WMU from 1981-1986. During his time at WMU, Mattison coached alongside John Harbaugh, who was a graduate assistant and assistant coach at the time.”
In my opinion, Mattison always seemed like the most likely candidate. He has more experience than any other coach that the Ravens have and has coached defenses his entire lengthy career. On top of that, he has a good history with the Harbaugh family.
don’t know much about the guy except that he benefited from the University of Florida recruiting classes and now takes over a top rated D. if he’s not a Harbaugh family friend i don’t think he gets the job. but, thats in any business these days. they kept it in house but he’s only been here a year. thought we’d have a more high profile proven guy to work with proven D. now we have to get the Ray deal done so the D will stay awake in meetings.
You’re well underrating Mattison. Dude has had success on every college team he’s been on, and is generally considered one of the best defensive coaches in College Football. It would be more accurate for you to say that if Harbaugh had not been a close family friend we would never have gotten Mattison. He was considered an absolute coup by the Harbaugh coaching staff last year.
One question i have is
Are we gonna stay woth that mix style D or are we going to play more of a 3-4, 4-3,46 or what.
FEAR THE NEVERMORE DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't know
I imagine we’d at least try the same formula we did in the 2008 season in 2009. Of course with a few things spiced up.

I just wanted a guy who
can stop 3rd and really long and stuff a hurry up offense. Which are this D’s two biggest problems. The Hurry up def. has been a problem for years so who knows where to start on that one.
