We Meet Again (and again)

For the third time we will be playing your Baltimore Ravens and hosting you guys for the second time. Both games were classic and we should be in for another treat come next Sunday.

Over the curent year I went from hating you guys, to feeling sorry for you guys, to hating you guys, to rooting for you guys, and I am back to hating you guys. BUT I will say I have grown some respect for you guys in this course.

BUT having said that, I have got to like our chances as that you will carry your rookie QB into TRUE hostile conditions. That LP Field is hardly hostile compared to the snowy frigid conditions Flacco will have to perform in at Heinz Field next Sunday. Throw in some injuries on some key players that I saw on Saturday and you guys might be in trouble. Any word on McClain, Suggs, and Reed? I heard they were all pretty hurt. Oh and I think an offensive lineman was hurt too?

But its tough beating a team three times and I know you and your team are fired up to get one last crack at us, probably to try and kill as many as players on our team as possible even if you can't win. But hey that's how these games go! I am happy it comes down to the AFC North to show the AFC how to play physical football, the way it is meant to be played!

Good Luck! and break a leg (one of your own, literally)!

P.S. Thanks for taking out the ten-teeth ignorant titans, even our worst enemy (you) have never sunk low enough to stomp on a (fake) terrible towel (at least during the game), and i appluad you guys on having the class not to and give thanks to you for knocking those punks out.

P.S.S. People claim Flacco is not a rookie anymore but he still is. Yeah he has played 18 games but look at BR performance in the AFC championship game and how he performed in the reg. season. But who knows maybe he can make history again? Not.

The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

Ben is a beast no doubt. pitt had receivers flying everywhere and thats my biggest concern. i hope the Chargers were just that bad but you had 5 guys catching balls regularly. probably the best Ben has thrown this year. also concerning was how easy the game was for pitt. everyone should be healthy and rested by sunday. i’m hoping this game was so easy the ravens will give you a wake up shot in the mouth. maybe you’ve forgotten about hard hitting with you extended break. that little speedster back of Diego inflicted no pain. Neal and McClaine will remind you.

The chargers past defense was rated 31st for a reason. We got to hear all week about how they had improved drastically at the end of the season. I guess not so “drastically”.

True… but how in the world did they stop Peyton? In all honesty, I’m worried most about our inability to stop the pass recently.

Ben was on fire yesterday. If we find a way to disrupt the pass, we win. If we cannot, we lose.

Our defense is looking a little questionable down the stretch too.

Good point about the colts though, SD played a game good game against them. Maybe they only had one in them.

i don’t think the steeler was all that bad, remember alot of those yards were cheap after we were up like 28-10 so……it looked like they kind of let up a lil bit as they had the game in control and they still even got some sacks….i just got the feeling that after that first drive, which suprised me, if the steelers wanted to stop the chargers they did.

I’m not talking about just that game.

by steelguy99 on Jan 12, 2009 1:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well if you are talkin bout CLE and TEN?

I am still convinced that the entire Steelers team did not play with their entire heart and entirely give all of their effort for 100% of those games because they knew everything wasn’t on the line. You might think otherwise but so far when they HAVE to win, they show up, and they didn’t in those cases where it was not a must win. That is what happened no matter what your opinion is on whether they were giving it all or not.

Now we just gotta bring out the hunting rifle, we are going bird huntin’.

Yea I was thinking that when you guys played last night

Rivers was able to put up some huge numbers on you, but he didnt have sproles to back up the big southern mouth.

Good game guys, cant wait for this one.

Bring it - again and again and one more time!

Now we get to settle it. The Ravens can prove that they should have won the first ttwo by winning this one. Every team keeps saying Flacco is a rookie and will get flustered, but they keep on making excuses after he/we beat them. Perhaps you’ll come back here and do the same next week!

by Bleed-Black&Gold on Jan 12, 2009 10:08 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

no excuse from me…we made a dumb personal foul penalty in the first game and sat on a little lead and we back peddled on a monster drive in the last one. funny thing was how the O turned it over to our D for the wins and they crapped out for the same reason in both games- no pressure on Ben and short slants/poor tackling in the flats. people don’t like to hear it, but bart and ray put little pressure on qb’s (unless the sea parts like it did saturday). suggs is our only pressure hope if the safeties aren’t up on the line. ed reed hasn’t gotten to a qb in ages. with bart and ray scratching up the backs of the D-line qb’s simply dunk it in behind them. negative nancy i know but this is what concerns me most.

i think the best spot for our LB’s against the steelers is 5 yards from the line playing one on one with the TE and inside receivers. take away Ward first and let the chips fall where they may. but, we all know Ward is the first look on 3rd and long. Our LB’s get eaten in the zone. the one huge positive to they’re positioning is the way they can make dudes pay for it and turn it over. but, sure handed teams survive. who would have thought big LenDale could be flipped like that! i’d play safeties up and don’t worry about the deep ball as much. we need Leonhard to catch the rbs out of the backfield on passes…not 20 yards down field. take away the short game.

by raven on Jan 12, 2009 1:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

good thoughts

The Ravens need to get pressure on Ben or he will eventually make some plays. I’m sure Suggs will play, but it might be hard for him to provide that pressure if his shoulder is an issue. If you want a tip, play man-press coverage and blitz everyone else. Ben craps himself when that happens.

by BadMaafala on Jan 12, 2009 4:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

right on…you have to play man against good qbs..especially those that buy time…LB’s just stand there scare crow style when not in man D…never works against the good ones..it just makes the opposition have to pass 5 times to win instead of 2. slow death.

by raven on Jan 12, 2009 10:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Badmaafala- i’m glad you stated that..i’ve been beating my head against a wall for years wondering why we zone and try to rush straight up (to know avail or the D-linemen get swept 5 yards behind the qb while he steps up and passes) on Ben.

by raven on Jan 12, 2009 10:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

if you look at the TD drive in the last game, you guys stopped rushing and played zone and Ben all the sudden started looking great. Man defense can be tough if you’re playing great WR’s, and especially good pass catching TE’s and RB’s, but we don’t believe in using those guys on offense.

we certainly don’t. that would make moving and scoring the football to easy.

by NoCal-SteelCity on Jan 13, 2009 1:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

true..but we continue to relax in the 4th and let Ben have tons of time. your most dangerous plays are the dump offs or the 5-10 yarders to Ward to Bens right side. he seems to go right side 75% of the time. my worry is our pass rush. its pretty weak if suggs gets bottled up (and he’s not dominating by any means). teh rush gets stronger with the safety’s but that is risky business because ray/scott can’t hold the fort down without them in pass protection…and then we put Ngata back there! gotta go man and make Ben pass beyond 15 yards.

by raven on Jan 13, 2009 3:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ngata is awesome

From what I’ve seen of him. An absolute force. He would look pretty good, and fit in nicely, in the Black & Gold

well, I guarantee there will be about 5 holds preformed on Harrison that will go unnoticed

It happens every game. We had several non steeler fans on our board during the chargers game and even they were saying “how is that not holding?”
there were even two instances where CBS (or whoever it was) showed replays of the lack of holdings. One of which was about as obvious as you could get.

by shleeve on Jan 12, 2009 10:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Harrison must have endeared the refs like he did the ravens and pitt during his first 2 attempts at finding a job in the NFL. funny how the ravens let him go for being selfish/wanting to do it his way (uh, can you say ray/ reed/ rolle/mccalister).

by raven on Jan 12, 2009 10:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

did you mean "endured"?

otherwise I’m confused.

I’m sure whatever Harrison is put through just makes him more pissed off and ready to smother somebody. Therefore, it is completely surprising he hasn’t killed someone out there yet.

our pass o and creativity suffers in big games…cam revisited his “play to the competition” saturday. its nice to play it close and wait for turnovers but it didn’t work against the steelers. we need to come out aggressive and throw on 3rd and long!! let flacco grow.

by raven on Jan 12, 2009 1:36 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I almost think that Cam and Rex should come out with completely different schemes for this game. Flacco should throw more. I don’t know what we could change on defense. It’s already unpredictable. Maybe we should play more press coverage with safety help. It seemed like our corners lined-up 10 yards deep on most plays during the last games.

I don’t know, but I think that we need to be completely unpredictable in this game.

by BAL_Hawk on Jan 12, 2009 1:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

dead on Hawk!! we will unfortunately literally run into a steeler wall for a quarter and listen to the announcers say how patient we are waiting for a TO. screw that. won’t work didn’t work and barley worked. you come out with a QB. he’s a pro qb and should be assigned a full arsenal of plays and they should be used. This is Joe’s 19th game and we still won’t unleash him against good teams early.

Why do we have to wait for the other team to set the tempo and play accordingly. lets come out swinging and passing and stretch the field early. not only by bombs (our choice) but with 15-25 yard passes to Heap. they seem to be there. more mason as well. the best 3rd down dude in the business. YOU CANNOT RUN ON pitt with 3rd and 2+ at home with any confidence. Won’t happen and your better off passing.

by raven on Jan 12, 2009 2:03 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Where were the trick plays

against the tougher defenses? Why does Cam think they won’t work when the reward is certainly worth the risk? There were a couple times in the Titans game where I said “this would bew a good time for Cam to pull one out of his bag of tricks” but nope.

Rexx

by Rexx on Jan 12, 2009 4:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think you'll have a better chance running

Mason will be shadowed this game. Flacco will have to be on his A game and I don’t think either team will set a tempo until the 2nd half. But my prediction is that whoever gets the momentum going won’t stop. It’s a question of who’s motor will fire first. Good luck Ravens and may god have mercy on your players, because the Steelers sure as hell won’t! WWIII ah I can’t wait!

by Hochuli loves Broccoli on Jan 13, 2009 10:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Mason is always shadowed, and he’s still our top receiver. Eight receptions for 137 yards the first game against Pittsburgh and three for 23 yards the second time while Flacco was having possibly the worst game of his career. Expect the passing game to look more like the first game than the second.

What’s funny is that ike taylor has spent the majority of his time in the past two games on clayton – not mason. Not sure who you say “always shadows” him, but it sure as hell isn’t the steelers.

Ray Rice's Injury

while sounding like a joke “Deep Bruise” can be pretty serious and difficult to come back from. While in the Navy, I bruised my pelvis falling from a pipe. I seriously thought I had shattered it. It was a bone bruise, just like Rice has on his leg. I couldn’t piss for two days. I’m no wimp, I was born with spina bifida and as a kid, I used to have to do my own catheders (you ain’t felt pain until you are shoving a tube up your own…well you know.. Seriously, that “bruise” hurt like hell and it took me weeks to be able to walk right. I can’t imagine playing football with something like that. Then again…he makes more in a month to do just that then I made in my six years in the military…

you can really get some yards with Moore and Parker on screens/dunks after the D-line has been drawn in. we play deep rather short lately..trying to keep the play in front of us. we need to knock moore or parker out of the game. too much to handle if they are both playing well. add ward and then you have 3 guys capable of quick slant patterns. thats hard on our LBs.

by raven on Jan 12, 2009 10:45 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

well, I think he may be able to do more than just that.

the last time I saw Parker play like that was only once, his first start of the Super Bowl season against Tenn. He played amazing and if hes going like that again I don’t care how good the Ravens D is, he will get yards.
Thats a big “if” though, I mean, like I said I’ve only ever seen him play like that once.

I’m not sure how effective Moore will be on slants or screens (in all likely hood we won’t even use Parker on screens because Moore is better at it) simply because we have so many options. Arians (the OC) likes to spread the wealth all over the place. We have two pass catching TEs, one pass catching RB, and 3 capable WRs. Theres just too much. I would expect one, possible 2 screens by us the whole game. Other than that I wouldn’t worrying about it. Arians is all about variety in his distribution.

FWP will not be a factor

in the run game. Gary Russell will have more of a impact if the Steelers get to the goal line. Perhaps if Moore and Parker are used out of the backfield, but rushing the ball? No. It’s a very simple game this weekend. The team that puts the most pressure on the QB win. Period.

I’ve seen two games where you guys got burned on the ground – the giants game (and don’t give me your take away the long runs rexx) and the beginning of the TEN game before you broke their star. Don’t pretend like you are unbeatable on the ground. By the steelers? I doubt it. It’s not like our running game has been electric. But it could happen, it’s just not likely. Willie never runs well against the ravens, very few do.

I see steelers fans getting pretty optimistic about this one. It was only the chargers, it means very little.

by steelguy99 on Jan 13, 2009 9:25 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed with all points

but it’s more about the way we match up and despite what the Titans and Giants did, we match up better agains the Steelers with our ability to stop your ground game. If only we can get Ben to the ground with those arm tackles, heck, we’d be 2-0 this season if so!

Parker had a quiet but decently efficient game against you in the second game: 14 for 47, 3.4 ypa, and not very many stuffs. It’s not much, but it’s more than he usually does. He’s fresher now than he was then, and you guys are a little more beat up. I’m not saying he’s going to have a big game, but if he can do something like 17 for 60 (optimistic, but not unrealistic), I’d really like our chances.

Now I’m sure Ravens will twist his ankle or something if he starts running well, but still…

well yes it was the chargers but remember that chargers team was supposed to be SO MUCH better than before when we only beat them by 1. The Ravens should have beaten the Titans the first time they played so it isn’t that suprising that they did win this time even though you can clearly see that the Titans pretty much lost that game with turnovers. Not to mention speedy chris johnson was ripping up the Baltimore D.

The game we played in week 15 against the ravens was during a stretch of ball games where our offense was struggling. The differences between that last meeting and this upcoming is that instead of us coming off a tough stretch of games, the ravens are going to be coming off a tough game (which may not be a big deal but the amount of injuries in the game does leave concern). Also we have a 100% healthy team that includes a healthy FWP who granted doesn’t do much against the ravens but maybe he can try and do what successful runners were able to do this year against the ravens and that is changing direction. The ravens overpursue alot which causes them to leave cutback lanes wide open, seen in the Titans and Giants game and FWP was unable to really cut on that bad knee in the previous matchup. This go around i expect him to get around 70 yards and that should be enough.

The chargers are not an easy opponent. You guys act like they are a bad team, they are still a good team with the #1 QB in the AFC. We have obviously improved because during the first SD game we only won by 1 but after they supposedly greatly improved, we beat them by even more, this time 11. The fact is that when we were unable to score a touchdown against that same defense earlier in the year but churned out 4 this time around, and we converted in the red zone a little better even though they once again tried the same dive play up the middle on 4th down that always get stopped (this time with a FB).

Granted the chargers are not a very physical team but we are. We know how to play physical and if we had to play the ravens coming off a bye, i would be more concerned, but that warmup game against SD will help us, especially with the confidence.

No the Chargers were NOT a good team

They were a BAD team, not in the class of the Titans, Ravens or your Steelers. Either one of the three of us would have done the exact same thing to them that you did.

well

you can argue that they beat the colts who beat both of us, including the titans. And don’t say they were BAD, yeah they weren’t as good as people claimed they were, they weren’t BAD.

steelguy is right when saying that they were about equal to the Dolphins except they had a better QB and better Offense and more physical team than the dolphins.

by Bleed-Black&Gold on Jan 13, 2009 2:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

They are equal to the dolphins???

But have a better QB, better offense and more physical team? How is that equal?

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Jan 13, 2009 2:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

because

the dolphins have a better D and better RB and probably a better coach

by Bleed-Black&Gold on Jan 13, 2009 2:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well

idk about the RB but its close

by Bleed-Black&Gold on Jan 13, 2009 2:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Dude, their Defense is terrible

Joey Porter and thats it.

SD is a way better defense, especially when they have Merriman in. Dolphins are just bad all around and they WONT have a winning season next year.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Jan 13, 2009 2:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

um

SD defense is ranked 25th
MIA defense is ranked 15th

So ummm yeah I think Miami’s defense was a little better, why do you think SD lost so many games?? They had a top offense but their defense sucked! They were scoring 20+ and still losing

by Bleed-Black&Gold on Jan 13, 2009 2:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You all are forgetting.

The Dolphins BEAT the Chargers this season. They are both a solid level below the Ravens, Titans and Steelers. That’s all I’m saying.

The Pittsburgh Steelers offense could not run a screen to save humanity.

I’ve watched every game this year, and I can’t think of 1…of the running back, wide receiver, or even tight end variety.

The one screen that almost worked against the Chargers, was called back for holding.

by NoCal-SteelCity on Jan 13, 2009 2:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

we do suck at screening

it is either a bad pass, gets knocked down, or penalty

for some reason we are inept at running a simple screen play, the o-lineman are confused, our running backs are confused, and Ben doesn’t know how to throw them the ball, its just a complete mess and is pretty shameful as it is a very useful weapon against a good D like the ravens.

by Bleed-Black&Gold on Jan 13, 2009 2:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Against the ravens it would be either a bad pass, interception, or penalty. I hope we don’t dick around with the screen game this weekend because WE SUCK AT IT. The AFCC is not a time to try to get better at it.

by steelguy99 on Jan 13, 2009 3:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i have a bad habit of lumping the screen in with the dump pass…i have visions of Moore getting a few in the flats for 15+. He’s my biggest concern. Ward will get his but I know we’re they will be..At the bottom of my TV screen for 7,8,9 all for first downs on Ben’s time bought scrambles. I accept that. You do spread the O out amongst many players.

We need to get away from McClaine, McClaine, Mason/ McCLain, McGahee Mason/ McClaine, McClaine Clayton…I’d like to see Heap on first down or Rice in the flats. I’d like to see a 20 yard pass on 3rd and a long 1. I’d like to see an end-around early. I’d like to see Troy Smith on 1st and goal on the 5. I’d like to see Troy take a pitch w/option to throw. Why the hell not! Flacco needs to watch his blind side and get that mental clock wound.

by raven on Jan 13, 2009 3:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Rice and Heap worry me in the passing game. I’m most scared of Mason (he’s like Ward to you guys), but we don’t have a good matchup for Heap unless we put Polamalu in the box and have him man up or play a short zone on Heap’s side. Rice isn’t a huge every down concern, but he’s similar to Mewelde Moore in that he can get those killer dump-off first downs. The big question with him is his health.

I think Timmons could neutralize Heap

But, Coach Dad doesn’t gameplan that way. That’s why I’m not going to suggest anything, just say that I think Timmons could equal out Heap.

yep…i just don’t have faith that Cam will change anything..he is misguided to think the formula they have used the past two games aginst pitt and the playoff games are worthy. but, he will see that we held our own with you for 3 quarters whcih might be enough to try the same plan again. that leaves a Ben vs. Joe match up in the forth quarter. normally, i’d say okay lets do it BUT Ben wont have handcuffs on and (if the past repeats) Joe will be helicopter coached and forced to milk the clock/hang on. sure fire way to lose to a good team. i hope things are vastly different this fourth quarter/whole game for that matter.

In case you were wondering how this game is going down...

Ed Reed did it…

in Heinz Field…

with the pick

Kevbo: [to George Sherrill] George, you look a lot like Vin Diesel...

Flatbill: Let's get somethin' straight... Vin Diesel looks like me.

Are you sure????

I thought it was a “Mystery Date” reference….

"When they get drafted by the Baltimore Ravens, we expect them to play like that. Are we surprised? No."

ed reed more than likely won’t even get 1 interception, unless a wide receiver falls down or tips it or somethin crazy but he won’t have those picks where he reads the QB’s eyes and takes advantage of him.

by Bleed-Black&Gold on Jan 15, 2009 11:00 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wow, you can predict the future?

Why do you say that? Because Big Ben is soooo much better than the QB’s who he did gets picks from?

Rexx

by Rexx on Jan 15, 2009 12:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

um yeah

derek anderson, jason campbell, david gerrard, kevin kolb, chad pennington, tony romo?

only one you can argue is tony romo but he sucks in december and Big Ben is still better especially when you look at the fact that Romo is suppose to have the one of the best WR corps with a top 3 TE and RB and like All-Pro Bowl O-line. and he still sucks. All of them combined probably don’t even have 3 playoff wins.

Yeah, but...

Garrard, Pennington and Romo all had better stats this season than Ben.

that doesn’t make them better. What has he gotten against Big Ben this year??

Philip Rivers

is Philip Rivers and Dree Brews better than Peyton Manning?? they had better numbers

he got one against mcnabb, but that is the only decent QB, and this is after they tied with the BUNGLES…with mcnabb throwing 3 picks against the BUNGLES…so enuf said. He got one off a decent QB, none off a struggling Big Ben

i slow-mo’d the pitt/diego game..pitt always seems to pass when they stack 3 receivers at the right end of the line. when they put 2 receivers out wide its a run most of the time. the TE seems to always attempt to get in the flat for a pass even during a run play. the rb sets up on bens hip. this gives ben a quick look for a pass and then a very quick hand off up the gut if its not there.

i like the set up. they actually allow the opponents d to get penetration because they have so many in the short pass area. dink and dunk. we mioght be better off not rushing but containing and picking up the TE’s and RB’s coming out of the backfield..and pray a 3 man rush can do something.

by raven on Jan 15, 2009 7:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

He also does

the fake quick throw to the left and then spins to do the same thing on the other side. I like that play because it changes the field so quickly and is usually successful.

you should just coach them then…

our offense isn’t that complex, i am suprised it still works…BA sucks and more than likely will be fired but we don’t like to fire people midseason.

by Bleed-Black&Gold on Jan 15, 2009 10:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it works against us…the rest of the teams you just out muscle. it gets you the division and maybe Arians is simply doing it to play it safe so the D can win the game. It’s a frustrating formula but there are so many teams watching this upcomong game from their couch. There are also many teams who haven’t sniffed a playoff game for years or finshed with 4 or less wins. I think we get spoiled (i do) because when you get near the top it comes down to the best QB and then the separation in talent becomes more painful. Take out Manning and Brady and both the Steelers and Ravens see the Championship game and maybe the SB more often- with Arian’s O or the Raven’s O. It has sucked for quite some time having those two in the AFC way.
