Around the NFL-Chargers Should Only Blame Themselves
I've read and heard a ton of whining about the horrible call by the ref at the end of the Denver-San Diego game that allowed the Broncos to have another chance on an obvious fumble that should have ended the game with a Chargers victory. I am so sick and tired of blaming the loss and other losses on the refs when one call never makes the difference between winning and losing a football game. I know I'd be pissed as well if it was against my team and believe me, the refs have shafted my Ravens as much as any team in our 12 years in this league.
However, football is a 60 minute game and the Chargers only have themselves to blame for allowing the Broncos to be in position for the ref to blow that call. What about the other 31 points they allowed in the first 59 minutes of the contest? Are they the ref's fault as well? What about the 70+ yards they gained on their final drive in the last few minutes of the game? Who is responsible for playing virtually zero defense for the entire game and allowing a rookie wideout (Eddie Royal) to catch the final TD and subsequent 2 point conversion when the game was on the line?
This is why I cringe and smoke begins to pour from my ears when I hear how a team got ripped off by the refs. You've got to look at the game as a whole and put the blame squarely on your team for allowing your opponent to even be in the game long enough for the refs to blow a call like that at a critical point. Man up, guys and take responsibility instead of blaming your screw ups all game long on one ref's screw up on just one play.
Enough said.

Completely disagree here
A team goes into their best division rival’s home stadium, and beats them according to the rules, and they don’t deserve to win because Denver kept it close? San Diego deserves a win just as much as Dallas did last night. And Denver deserves a win just as much as Philadelphia does. Ironically, that game also turned on a fumble, when McNabb botched the handoff to Brian Westbrook. The Eagles and the Broncos played great ball, but SD and Denver played better. The only thing is, a completely blown call by the ref (and it was one of the most excruciatingly bad calls I’ve ever seen) changed the outcome of the game. That’s ridiculous. Close games are part of the NFL, and we rely on officiating to make sure they’re called correctly.

Agree to disagree
I’m sure every fan of San Diego agrees w/ you and Denver fans agree w/ me. Denver had that game won early and let SD back into it. One play ending up deciding the final outcome, but so many other plays had a majority of the effect on the total points scored. Sorry, no excuses for San Diego. Norv was always a great o-coordinator but has never cut it as a head coach.

"One play ending up deciding the final outcome"
I don’t think San Diego fans are blaming their poor play on the officiating. They’re blaming the outcome of the game on that one call, which you concede, decided the final outcome.
I don’t understand your point that “other plays had a majority of the effect on the total points scored.” You could use that to dismiss the importance of any single play, and you’d be right in a limited sense, but that’s a misleading and inaccurate way of looking at it. It’s a collection of all the plays that determine the outcome. This, however, does not mean that any given play is meaningless. Individual plays do determine the outcomes of games, and there’s no doubt that that call did just that.
The blown call only cost the Chargers the game because of the way they played earlier. True. Any close game is going to have many individual plays that could have determined the outcome. Of course there’s going to be other plays to point to in a game that consists of many plays. The fact that the Chargers could have still won the game if they had defended Eddie Royal on the 2 point conversion doesn’t excuse any of the other individual plays.
“Why blame the blown call instead of any other play?” I think that’s kind of a silly question. Inaccurate calls should never decide an outcome. This call undoubtedly decided the outcome.
I think what you’re trying to argue is that San Diego didn’t deserve to win, given their poor play. Discussions about which team “deserved” to win are usually pretty worthless: games are measured strictly by how the teams perform on the field. This only works when the measuring is accurate! If the game had been properly officiated, San Diego would have almost certainly won. San Diego would still have played poor defense in a properly officiated game, and you could still question Norv Turner’s abilities, but those are separate problems.
A team deserves to win if it would have won the game if it been refereed accurately.

Great post!
While we may agree to disagree on the individual points, your comments are right on target and you backed them up with rational and reasonable points. This is as good as a response to a posting I’ve ever seen on this blog, or any other for that matter. There were no personal attacks, just counter points to my opinions. I note you understand my position, but still feel that the outcome would have certainly been different if that call hadn’t been blown, which is reasonable accurate. However, my entire point was not to deny that, but mainly just to state that the Chargers not only played good enough to win, but good enough to lose as well. Thanks again.

It was a BS call...
But until we have robots as Ref’s, there will always be human error. For that reason teams should never put the outcome in the Ref’s hands whenever possible. When it happens and a call is blown, it’s unfortunate. But it happens, and I guarantee it will happen again. In that regard I agree with Rexx. I doubt this would provide me any solace if I was a Charger fan though. They have a right to be pissed at the call, but should be just as mad that their vaunted D has given up game winning drives the past 2 weeks.
