New Defensive Coordinator?
With Week 18 feeling so far away, my mind started wandering towards next year. A lot of journalists feel that Rex Ryan is one of the top potential head coaching hires in the league at the moment (behind the Giants' D-Coordinator? Puh-lease), especially considering that he's also the "Assistant Head Coach." Now, I'd love to see him stay, but somebody's eventually going to give him a shot at carrying the big clipboard. Assuming the worst this upcoming offseason, what do we do?
Romeo Crennel is currently available. He coached a good Patriots D earlier this decade, and if I had to guess, I'd say he probably wouldn't mind going back to coordinating with our Ravens, specifically because of how well our defense played this season.
Other than that, who's a possible candidate? Any spectacular position coaches ready to take a step up? The Defensive Backs coach must have the patience of a saint to deal with all the divas we have running around in the secondary.
Other than that, I'm really not sure.

Lets stay inside
Ryan has been with the team for almost a decade now (9 years) and he’s only been a D. Coord for about three.
Find a talented guy who can’t wait to put his ideas to practice. One that already knows the players, one that knows what kind of defense this team likes to play. Romeo Crennel? He’s officially a retread now.
I think we’ll make the right decision. I hope that we can keep Ryan around for a few more years, and we can pay him the money he deserves. But when it’s time for him to go, I just have a feeling that we’re going to hire from the inside, and we’re going to make a good decision.
I just feel like the Front office all the way down to the coaching staff and trainers are the best in the league.

Re: Lets stay inside
I can definitely agree with your assessment of the front office. Their only real shortcoming was finding and developing a franchise QB, but we’re looking good on that front now. Also, I think Ozzie and company have a great eye for talent in general.
I just don’t know much about the coaching staff outside of Harbaugh, Cam, and Rex. I’ve read some great stories about our quarterback and offensive line coaches (who you can tell are really doing a great job), but not much at all on any of the defensive coaches.

Frankly, I'm at the point
where anything the FO does is obviously “the best move we could have made”

I'd take Mike Nolan back in a hearbeat!
Also waiting to hear about Marvin Lewis. Both would be welcome!

It's ReX Ryan, not Rexx
I’m Rexx, he’s Rex! Dammit get it straight or I want to make some defensive decisions like to keep on blitzing late in the game so the opponents can’t move down the field like the Titans and Steelers did! Okay!?

In House
I would like too see either Clarence Brooks the d-line coach or Mark Carrier the secondary coach be granted a fair shot at being promoted too the position. Brooks has 33 years of experience coaching while Mark played for 11 years but has only been coaching for 2 years with the Ravens. The numbers point too Brooks but Mark is younger and seems like a person better suited for the attention the position brings. Not sure, what do you guys think?

Wade Phillips would be the best defensive-coordinator!
Like Cameron, he’s a MUCH better coordinator than head-coach. He had the Cowboys defense firing on all cylinders and was awesome for the Chargers as well. Not only that, but he’s worked with Cam before. I’d love to see what he could do with the Raven’s awesome defensive personnel. It’s too bad that Jerry Jones is going to keep him.
The next best candidates are Marvin Lewis and Mike Nolan. Lewis, like Phillips, will likely keep his job in 2009. If we can’t get any of these guys, I think that they should find someone in-house.
I’m still hoping that Ryan will stay. Who knows? Maybe he won’t like any of the offers thrown at him.

Hope Ryan stays
I have too disagree with you about Phillips because knowing Jerry Jones he will not let him go if he knows what is good for his team. The Cowboys looked horrible in their last couple of games but at this point Phillips is the only one I can see turning around that franchise next year. I’ll admit in theory its nice too think of what Phillips could do with our defense but then again how great of a job has he really done with the Cowboys overall defensively?

Romeo has bad mojo all over him. I think Carrier fits our D mentality..he has only known success and was a beast in his day. if he knows the x’s and o’s as well as he played- a nice choice. this is also the best our DB’s have ever played in 12 years. they are everywhere. he has brought along Zibby, Washington, Leonhard and others very very well. Marvin was a product of our once in a lifetime special D. not sure how much was marvin. i definately know it had nothing to do with crappy billick. nolan was another guy on a free Ray Ray ride. carrier is actually building something..and it works. might be a diamond in the rough.

I don’t want to come off as rooting for Crennel, but Cam Cameron had some pretty bad mojo coming into the Ravens organization, too.

You could say the same thing about Crennel with the Patriots. You don’t become a dynasty without solid play from your defense.
