Proud of and sorry for our loud and amazing fans.
For the most part we closed the door on the Steeler's fans today. It was a sea of screaming purple. There were pockets of yellow but nothing even close to the way Steeler fans travel to other stadiums. I am proud of B-more! Unfortunately, the Ravens had no offensive game plan. When the running game got going Cam backed off it. They didn't attempt anything remotely creative and served up bread and butter to the Steelers all day. Our O went into its big game shell and bit itself in the ass.
Our defense was terrific. But, as usual, can't stop the last drive in a decisive game. This game wreaked of New England and many others from the past few years. To be considered a great D you need to stop teams when it matters most. The Steelers had to go 92 yards and did. The best team won today. The Steelers D had to play with horrible field postion and the Ravens couldn't put them away. We had great special teams, tremendous D and the best field position one could even dream of in game like this. But the Steeler D held- even after their O fumbled within their own 20.
Cam Cameron was a bore. When he ran on 3rd and 8 early in the first quarter I knew that could be the game. He was tight, showed little confidence in Flacco early and played scared. You have to pass on the Steelers on first or second down if you want any success at all. You settle for 3rd down passes and they tee off. At the end of the game, when we could have put it away with about 4 minutes on the clock, Cam runs on first and second down for 1 yard each. With an obvious 3rd down passing situation my whole section knew Flacco was going to get sacked- out of field goal range. We played into the Steelers hands going punt for punt with minimal creativity. Unfortunately, the Steelers have a proven short passing game with more than one receiver and picked us apart for the win.
Question the horrible officiating but it was Cam who couldn't get things in gear. Not one gadget. For some reason, we save those for the bad teams. We barely stretched the field. Our receivers did beat the Steelers deep at times but Flacco was high with his passes. In Cams defense, Joe missed on 3 crucial balls- 2 in the end zone. McClaine was picking up steam with back to back runs of 6 and 7 yards before Cam went pass and Flacco through the Int.. Figures, he passes on first down when the running game was starting to gain momentum (even though the refs gave the Steelers a rest with an official huddle?). We have the weapons but played ultra conservative and all of us who have followed this team knew keeping Ben around would be costly.
Our D is very good but they are far from great. Time and time again they go soft on huge last drives. They sit back and watch the clock and the next thing we know the other teams in the red zone. We had the Steeler at 3rd and 10 only to watch the worst DB coverage of the day. When they sit back on D, Ray Lewis/LB's are dead in the water as receivers buzz around them. We put ourselves in these situations and get upset when a bad call occurs. Good teams don't put themselves in these situations big game after big game. The Titan's game, first Steeler's game and this game our D choked and we come away upset about the refs. Our opponent had 3rd and long in all these games on crucial drives and Rexx Ryan chose to go soft with 3 man fronts and let our D get picked apart. It is sad to sit amongst all the amazing Raven's fans giving every thing they have only to have our D lose it in the end. At least Bart didn't throw a flag in the stands.
Congratulations to the Steelers for shutting us down. They have beat us twice and deserve the division. They make teams play their game and and have confidence to get it done on both ends. They make the plays that need to be made. We threw this game on our D and milked field goals. This may be a good recipe for squeezing out a winning record but not for making the playoffs. I am actually less angry knowing that the D had the game in their hands. They weren't screwed out of anything but, instead, screwed themselves again. How disappointing and predictable!
The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

MaLoR and raven
I am a big Steelers fan and member of Behind The Steel Curtain. I must say I have been very impressed with the Ravens fans who have come over onto that site, particularly you two. Obviously, I have a ton of respect for your team. You guys have always played very physical ball, just like us. I think if our teams played 5 times, one team would win 3 and the other 2. Anyways, hope we don’t meet in the playoffs, because you guys are tough. I’m getting distracted from the main message of my post which was to express my gratitude towards Ravens fans in general for their classy behavior on BTSC. If some of our fans have been coming on Beatdown talking shit, then I apologize on behalf of the rest of Steeler nation.

yea
theres always gonna be some crazy/rude fans but you guys seem to grasp that in the end its still just a game (an awesome one at that). Tip of the cap to you sirs.
Now, as far as the game goes, I was there and had nothing to cheer about for awhile. Not to try and toot the horn or anything but how awesome must this team be in order to play like complete crap (except our D) for 58 minutes and still win? I am impressed.
The officiating was certainly questionable but it was for both sides. The Holmes TD and Russell first down run were both very iffy, as was the lack of holding calls against the Ravens O line, the non-existent holding call on willie colon, and the lack of illegal contacts/pass interferences on Ravens DBs (I watched it on DVR after the game as well).
In the end it just came down to one team making the plays when they have to.
It certainly was everything we expected it to be.

Over on BTSC
There is even a thread discussing whether we want the #1 or #2 seed and which seed could better avoid the Ravens in the playoffs.

PROMOTED!!!
I was going to write a long story this morning, but when I read this posting, it said everything I was going to focus on:
-The first drive when we ran on third and eight set the tone.
-The last drive when we ran on 1st and 2nd downs, then tried to pass on 3rd, when we should have ran and kicked the FG, or thrown on 2nd down instead of 3rd.
-The way they sit back in the secondary and only rush three at crunch time.
Great job, raven and mad props to you from the Steelers’ fans as well!

Very impressed with ravens fandom (even the baltimore sun) for laying the blame primarily on the ravens and not the poor officiating.
I have to agree with raven. I thought your offensive coordinator completely dropped the ball. Your running game was frustrating to watch as a steelers fan, McClain was just bowling over our defense so frequently and getting consistent yardage. Most importantly, our defense is usually so good at getting stuffs, and I don’t know that we even stuffed one run against the ravens. I thought that on sunday it was clear that our pass defense was better than our run defense. It seemed like Cam didn’t get the memo that this isn’t the old steelers defense with a great run D and a suspect pass D. When the run was working, he went pass. The passes were predictable, you could see the play action coming 2 minutes in the future. Flacco had plenty of time a lot but the coverage was too consistent.
Steelers nation was expecting trick plays, where were they? They needed the spark and cam didn’t allow it to come. Even a failed trick play would have lit the offense up a bit.
Basically, I’d agree with raven.
Ran the ball at the wrong times.
When the run was working, predictably shifted away from it for the pass.
Part of the reason the run game was working was that the steelers refused to stack the box and mcclain was a beast. It seems that Cam somehow decided the steelers were biting on the run and that play-action would be fruitful. He wasn’t paying attention.
In the very end, your defense lost you the game. But the loss is on your offense. As we lament in steelers nation with our horrible offense v. philly, if you can’t win a game when your opponent is held to 13 (or 15) points, then you don’t deserve the win. That being said, this game could have gone either way.
Reed returns fumble for a touchdown, Holmes punt return fumble doesn’t go for a 30 yard gain, etc. Tight game, could have gone either way.

Speed.
This biggest reason for the Steelers’ success on defense is simple… speed. They played extremely fast last night. Polamalu is in on every play because of his speed and reactions.
Our defense isn’t playing with the same speed, and our offense was laughable while trying to match it.

I liked the game plan
Personally I thought Cam called a damn good game. He neutralized our best player by putting an extra tackle on him every play (James Harrison), and took the chance out of the game by ask Joe to only pass intermittenly. Pound the rock, pound the rock, pound the rock. It’s very marty Schottenheimer, but against a defense as good and opportunistic as the Steelers, I think it was the right call. Especially with the Ravens defense shutting us down at every turn. Not to mention the ridiculous kicking ability by Koch. I apologize to Ravens fans for not voting for him for best punter in Pro Bowl. I didn’t know.

thanks everyone. i wrote this out of pure misery late last night after getting back from the game. some of my facts might be a little off because this was from the gut and it’s just a culmination of how i felt. i will watch the game on Tivo today with a coldie i’m sure there will be bright spots and a different factual perspective. anyway, it was a beautiful game and worth every penny and $7.50 beer (almost). rothlesberger was the difference. he creates time and space. when flacco had us at the 13 of pitt he threw it away under pressure. when ben had the steelers in a similar spot, he created time and won the game. he was “Joe Cool” today. Now let’s kick the hell out of the Cowboys and get this ship righted! Playoffs here we come. W.I.N.

I know one of you guys likes to keep tracks of the rankings, and I admit to reading them out of amusement. Look at the respect the ravens get after losing this last sunday. Bandwagon would have been real heavy if you guys won.

How can he put us above two teams who beat us and have better records?
I think he just feels bad for us because the NFL absolutely despises the Ravens and never wants to see them victorious. The headsets that the refs put on during challenges in Ravens games actually go to a bright red phone where ever Roger Goodell is, and he immediately tells them to make the call against the Ravens, no matter what. And you all know that if it was the Ravens in that situation, the ball would have been placed on the inch yard line.
From Suggs getting a roughing the passer call because his hand hit Collins on the shoulder, while being blocked by a lineman, while trying to sack the QB, while trying to swat the ball TO someone not having the ball cross the goal line and its a td. Look at it from this way….
Ok, so lets say Holmes trips and is laying on his stomach, with both his tips of his toes, and only them, on the other side of the goal line, and he miraculously makes an amazing catch on his stomach with only his feet in the endzone, then gets touched by Reed and is down by contact before having the chance to get up and advance the ball past the goal line . Would that be a td? I sure as hell do not think it would.
I no longer think the Ravens can make the playoffs, I am sorry. Dallas has so much going for them right now, as do we, but away, primetime, last game in a historic stadium. The crowd will be crazy, T.O will be pumped, and we will still have this loss in the back of our minds, no matter how many times Harbaugh says we have moved on, it will be some where in there. 10-6 is not going to make the playoffs for a few teams, and Ravens have a good chance of going 10-6. Miami goes to KC next week and then goes to NYJ, two very winnable games.
I am worried.

we’ve definately been the victim of some bad major calls…i’m talking the 15 yard variety and non-reviewable or not reviewed (Harbaugh- Masons TD in Pitt) stuff. not sour grapes but a sincerely poor officiating year for us. still, we could have made plays.

A Baltimore victory wasn’t exactly outside the realm of possibilities. The Ravens can beat the Steelers and in my opinion, are a more complete team. Roethlisberger won that game for the Steelers, and he had a little help from (the lack of) Fabian Washington.

after watching the game again i am convinced we are the better team..snake bit but better. flacco stunk it up and missed way too many opps. i have to backtrack and say the o-play calling was okay. it just failed because of the missed passes that were actually set up very well. dame game plan against dallas wins if flaccos on…

After finally being able to watch the DVRed game( I couldnt bring myself to until last night) I felt Flacco didnt have many check downs available. The one time he did, he instead through to Mike Smith for an interception. Maybe because he was afraid McGahee would drop it. (Wonder why…) I guess having “Number 79 is eligble receiver, I repeat for the 49th time, number 79 is an eligble receiver” gave us less options to throw to.
Maybe Adam Terry should have shed a block and broke out for a pass.
I also would have liked to see what would have happened had McClain not dropped the pass on the 2 yard line after Reed’s fumble recovery.
I thought it was funny how obvious the first challenge with the spot on 3rd down was and we still didnt get it. Was Paul Tagliabue in attendance?

78, not 79
but anyway, what would have happened if Reed had not been tackled immediately by Max Starks after picking up the fumble. Might have been six and that could have been it! Starks saved the game for them.

just aweful officiating from day one with the Chargers….i sincerely think the speed of the game and all its rules are too much for senior citizen refs…they aren’t always on the same page about what their reviewing under the curtain. i am still convinced the ref was looking at his feet in the endzone/possession and not the across the plain rule. CYA.

I've said this over and over
the game has passed the refs by. The game is too fast for human officiating by itsdelf. A microchip in the ball, better tech options, such as lasers to determine ball placement, as well as a ref in the booth reviewing ALL TD’s and close plays in the last two minutes without a need for Red Flag. Wouldn’t slow down the game, as the ref in the booth would signal down and the ref on the field would have a headset on all game. The only thing that hasn’t changed in over 50 years is the refs. They should also do something with the stupid whistles and yellow flags so what happened with Suggs and Collins doesn’t happen again.

My fault on the number… I think I also called Marcus Smith Mike…
Agreed with Reed.. After watching, he had a crowd to get through, but you never know with Ed.
Think the refs will help us out against America’s team?
