Ravens-Steelers: Gametime Open Thread

Hey guys: Feel free to use this space to post your in game comments. I'll be in the stands rooting for the home team to shut up the Steeler fans who invade M&T Bank Stadium, as well as ESPN's Chris Berman who loves the Steelers and never misses an opportunity to diss our Ravens. I'll check in after the game and read them all. Have fun!

i’m here in New Zealand listening to the game on internet radio. Unfortunately, the online options to watch the game didn’t work out (the slow connection I’m on probably rendered that a non-option anyway) but at least I’m listenin to local coverage. I WISH I could have seen Ray’s hit on Rothlesberger. 6-3 at halftime, this one is gettin grinded out as expected.

Welcome to the Beatdown

All the way from New Zealnad? Very cool. I was at the game and the hit was hard but not the type of hit Ray usually can lay on you. Ben was shook up and had to take a TO to get the cobwebs out.

So was the call reversal b.s. or was it justified? On the radio they made it sound like it was way too difficult to tell if the ball broke the plane or not.

That and that 3rd and 1 call

I am a die-hard Steelers fan

And I don’t see how they could reverse that last call, unless somehow they saw something we didn’t see. I also don’t think we got that first down at the 30. I think the Steelers would have tried to punch it in from the one-inch line, so I don’t think you can say that call determined the game, but you can scream about not having the opportunity to stop the fourth-down play. With that defense, you would have had a good case.

Giving credence to both sides, I am sick of James Harrison being held all season and not called. Flacco completed a crucial third-down pass while Harrison was blatantly collared around the neck. When we do anything close to that we pay dearly, yet Harrison has been held 100 times this year and not called.

In any case, the rivalry lived up to its reputation.

Yeah.

The missed hold on Harrison on that third down play was horrible and almost cost the steelers the game.

FG

we would have kicked the FG if they didn’t overturn it, but look at the overhead view or look at SNF where they drew the line on the goalline to the ball. Even though they say they wouldn’t overturn it, you can clearly see the yellow line they drew from the goal line intersecting the ball so they must just be trying to add fuel to the fire and getting the controversy riled up. Because that is what makes football great, the controversy, just like the Immaculate Reception.

but everyone has their opinions i guess, but the game was going to go into overtime and we have been moving the ball all day while Flacco and Co had been living off of luck plays, so i doubt the ravens get the ball first and score. It would have to take a CRAZY play for them to win in OT, so i guess you can complain about not getting the chance to get lucky in OT.

by Bleed-Black&Gold on Dec 15, 2008 1:21 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

There's no question the ball crossed the plain..

but, it doesn’t count as possession unless both feet are on the ground. There in lies the controversy. When both feet finally retouched the ground the ball was no longer across the plain. Even if it were, the video evidence wasn’t INDISPUTABLE. That being said, good game and we’ll see you in the AFC Championship game.

Didn't look like it to me on the replay

either way, it was too tough a call to overturn. Not that it might have mattered, as they had already driven 90 yards against our defense.

Otherwise there is no excuse for him sitting out that 4th quarter… Soon as he dipped out Big Ben started driving down the field cuz we had to rework our secondary… I blame this loss on him…

Agreed

Page 776 of the rules digest in the NFL fact book reads: "A player with the ball in his possession scores a touchdown when the ball is on, above or over the goal line."

None of this happened.

In addition, I’ve never seen d get so soft for one drive after playing well the whole game as the Ravens did on that final drive. Its like someone said “It’s put up or shut up time”, and so we stuffed a ball gag in our mouth.

by thedecline19 on Dec 14, 2008 8:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

They didnt get soft!

you all are missing it. Fabian Washington left the game in the 4th, it threw our whole secondary off, he had been breaking up passes with there receivers all game. Soon as he left, had to bring Frank in and samari wasnt it done.

Life is nothing but Beats & Rhymes

by Matchz Malone on Dec 15, 2008 1:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

disagree

there is also another view that should clarify some people’s minds, if you get the overhead view, you can clearly see the ball crossing the goal line. just accept it and try to win on saturday, short week for you guys.

but at the same time it doesn’t matter what you think, only what that head judge thinks, and he saw it as a TD as he is trained to do so. Just like he didn’t see holding on Harrison because all officials are trained to ignore that call on harrison.

would you rather lose by a FG in overtime?? A repeat of Week 4? No that may have been too devasting for you so be happy with the way you lost this one.

by Bleed-Black&Gold on Dec 15, 2008 1:16 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

who says that happens. Who says the Steelers don’t go for it on 4th and win it like that anyway. The point is, the video evidence wasn’t INDISPUTABLE to overturn that call. A conspiracy theorist might say that if TEN had won yesterday that call doesn’t get overturned because next week’s game between the two wouldn’t carry quite as much value. Now not only does the NFL get the AFC North Division “Championship” one week, but they also get the AFC #1 seed “championship” the next week. I’m no conspiracy theorist… just sayin’.

I’ve seen “indisputable” evidence be made up on challenges all year long in tons of games, many not involving the steelers. That rule is bogus, and the refs this year are terrible. No more objective bullshit, no more blind refs, no more refs that don’t know the rules.

We have the technology asshats, call this stuff right so we don’t have to talk about this after the game for months.

by steelguy99 on Dec 15, 2008 9:35 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I was hoping

that the ball was short of the goal line. Then I wanted Tomlin to go for it. One play to fairly decide the game, mano-a-mano. That is the way it should have been and if the Steelers could have punched it in, then give them the game and their props. Right or wrong, this just leaves another bad taste in the mouth.

I agree

And I don’t like us to win like that. I would have preferred to have the ball on the two-inch line with one play to win or lose. If we can’t get two inches, we don’t deserve to win.

Thoughtful discussion with a sense of history

by maryrose on Dec 14, 2008 8:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

we scored a touchdown thats the fact.

LOOK AT THE FREAKING REPLAY IN SLOW MOTION.

they showed it to you, at the exact moment Holmes catches the ball it is on the white line if you pause it to look at it better. They drew a line on the goal line on SNF and it ran into the ball as Holmes feet were on the ground, one foot planted and the other being drug, and he didn’t bobble the ball at all. hence the ball was in possession and the ball is ON the goal line, hence

TOUCHDOOOOOOOWN Steelers win!

also it isn’t like the ravens didn’t have a chance to win the game at the end, they still had 50 seconds with a timeout and good field position, no excuse. Also when you consider that they had the WHOLE GAME to try and score another TD to ice the game. so they had their chances.

by Bleed-Black&Gold on Dec 15, 2008 1:10 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No excuses what so ever!

I was at the game, and the whole time I thought it was a TD.

I would not be the typical ravens fan here and cry about it being a bad call. Cause that call did not lose us the game.

The soft pass coverage we played during that last drive, lost it. The multiple times we had the ball past the 50 yard line and couldnt capitalize lost it for us. Gotta play to your abilities against a team like Pitt. Hope to see you all at Heinz for third rematch.

Congrats on your title, enjoy it guys, you definitely earned it, thats for god damn sure

Have to agree

Love to hate the Steelers, but they do what it takes to win. Be it a late TD against us after driving the length of the field, or coming back from 10 down to take a pick six against the Cowboys, the do what it takes to win. Damn them to hell!

Rexx

*still complaining*

The pass coverage was because Fabian left, Rex had to adjust the defense to take into account Holmes speed and Washington. I mean we had Frank and Corey in there… they are BUMS and Rolle is inconsistent… for the most part Washington had been playing consistent all game as soon as he left everything went to shit

by Matchz Malone on Dec 15, 2008 1:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

One foot was planted...

but there’s no way to say for sure that the other foot was being dragged when he had possession of the ball over line. I’m not arguing whether it was or wasn’t a TD, I’m arguing that the call on the field was no TD and there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn it.

be realistic here, you should know good and well that that statistic is not a very representing one for your Offense. You do not have the best scoring offense. A lot if not MOST of those points can be attributed to the Defense or ST in some sort of way.

props given

because i didn’t expect you guys to have a record this good. Against us though, you always play us tough correct, whether or not you are good so it has nothing with how good you are this year. I really don’t think you are THAT good this year but we will see next saturday when you go in Big D.

We always do this bull ish where we kinda lolligag and suck for the first 3 quarters and then play in the last one. If we just focus and execute like i know we can, it is probably a blow out.

I had been saying it for awhile before the game and during the game only reinforced my idea but i think we should have came out passing on you guys. It was evident last game that it worked and this game it was working once again even more than last game. I thought we should have mostly passed it until we got up or until your defense stopped stacking the box to stop the run.

But your team is still a great team and a contender in the AFC, your recipe (taken from the 04 steelers) will usually work unless it is in a close game situation. You guys are good at stopping the run, running the ball, not making mistakes, and doing PA.

by Bleed-Black&Gold on Dec 15, 2008 1:02 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

watch the replay

from the sideline. If you look at the ball, it hits impact on the gloves of santonio and is right on the goalline, all it had to do was get some white and it was right above it, it was a good call, if not we will hear from perira.

3rd and 1 call was close and you couldn’t overrule what was called on the field because there was not enough evidence to overturn it. I personally don’t believe we got it but after they said we did on the field i knew there was no way they could overturn it.

Yeah its so ridiculous that they never call holding for harrision, that was an obscene holding call they missed, absolutely no excuse, tthis is like the 5th game in a row they have failed to call a holding call for us.

by Bleed-Black&Gold on Dec 14, 2008 9:46 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Even if it was a touchdown, which I think it was, the refs once again totally blew the call. His two feet had nothing to do with whether or not the touchdown was in. The only thing that matters was whether the ball crossed the plane or not. I think it did, barely, but it is debatable, and the call on the field was that it didn’t.

The refs suck. You can’t fucking make up rules.

by steelguy99 on Dec 14, 2008 10:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it did though

because if his two feet aren’t on the ground then he doesn’t have full possession yet, or it has not been established, so if he catches it in the air like he did but then lands outside of the endzone with the ball outside of the endzone, i don’t think it is a touchdown because he never had possession of the ball while the ball was in the endzone.

No longer good enough for me

we had zero expectations when the season began, but nbow when others say we’ve had a good season, I cringe. That is no longer good enough for me. My expectations are higher now at this point. While I predicted this summer in my blog every game, I had the Ravens finishing 10-6 but out of the playoffs. That would be disappointing to me to say the least at this time, when the post season is waiting there for us to grab.

It's so funny

that everyone of you ratbird fans are complaining about that TD call, when the ball was over the white line, and how none of you mention anything about the BS holding calls on Harrison the entire game. Flacco won, I’ll say it. He won because he got to go home without a broken back from Harrison being held all night. I suppose that is a greater victory for him than actually winning the game. Oh, not to mention, we pounded the ball down your throats WHEN WE HAD TO DO WORK, and you guys couldn’t stop us. Put up, or shut up.

Good Game

I was scared of this game because I respect the B-more defense a lot. But with all the junk talked about our offense all week, we found the difference between the two. Why ben was given the contract he got was just showed on the field today. Even though the offense had been sluggish all game, he made plays -when it matter. He had a game winning drive and that is ultimately the difference between flacco and ben right now. Ben won this game for his team and fllacco didnt lose the game. Until flacco develops and is able to win you games then you will lose close games like that.

With that said, your perception is always dependent on the lens you gauge it in. So I try to be as un-biased as much as I can. That touchdown was close, but if you watch as soon as Holmes catches the ball, the ball is right above the goal-line. Therefore it has crossed the plain and is a touchdown. As much as the media wants to stir up drama if you pause it right at that moment where he initially catches the ball you can draw a line and see that ball is above the line. It was the right call no matter what anyone will say.

Harrison was held on the big play down the field flacco had, it would have been a sack if he wasn’t held. I don’t understand why the nfl does not make the refs call that call. this is the 5th game our nfl-leading defense has went a game without getting a holding call. Its crazy to think that we get the sacks we get while at the same time the offense gets away with holds all game. This is a shame, if harrison gets those holding calls then maybe he’d have about 20 sacks by now. I thought it was gonna cost us the game because of the long completion. But our defense is so good and yes they are the reason we have been winning but that is a good thing. Every team has something that makes them win. Either good d or good O so I’m happy we got good d and our O came through when we needed it. So much for that B-more D. I am kinda dissapointed, we drove 90 yards on yall in crunch time. Recievers were wide open, especially Nate. I guess our offense isnt that bad just havent been able to put a full game together. But the way the AFC is lookin now, no doubt that the Steelers are the #1 team and we should get to the super bowl. although I’d still rather not play baltimore again, its hard to beat a team 3 times especially one as good as baltimore. Good game though guys you played hard on both sides.

I think part of the reason why ben was given such a contract might have to do with the fact that he’s not a rookie, don’t you think?

by steelguy99 on Dec 14, 2008 10:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well...

if you look at the draft the rookies are getting some good money. but it doesn’t matter if you are a rookie or not you still have to produce. Thats what ben did today and no one can take that from him, he drove down the field when it mattered and won the game, thats how you earn ya paycheck.

You’re still comparing a QB of 5 years to a rookie. If we’re stooping to the point of making comparisons like that, it’s not good for steelers fans or Ben.

by steelguy99 on Dec 15, 2008 9:38 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True

as much as you want to rag on him or his horrible performance, he IS still a rookie and was never expected to be the starter when originally drafted this year. He’s done remarkable but playing a tough defense like Pittsburgh’s will be tough on any QB, much less a rookie.

our O is good bro

they just don’t seem to execute at times. They have talent but there is always something preventing a drive like a dropped pass, a bad play call, a fumble, an INT, a stupid penalty, or just good D because that will happen sometimes.

We just need to cut down on the things we can control and our offense will be fine now that the line is blocking good. Great Potential in the offense i see.

Just like to apologize for some of the over the top bragging going on here.

Damn tough game. Almost impossible the ravens don’t make the playoffs. I really, really hope they get knocked out before the steelers have to play them. Just saying.

i dunno

the way everyone is playing nowadays, that doesn’t seem likely to happen. It depends on the seeding but the only team i see the ravens losing to besides us is the New England Patriots. Yep, if they go to NE if the patriots get the 3 seed, i see them losing that game.

man! Some very immature steelers fans coming in here and bragging. Not very appreciated. :’(

who?

let the guys have some fun, sounds like sour grapes.. you’d be doing the same if the ravens had won

Bullshit. The ravens fans were pretty obnoxious a few months ago I thought, but lately they’ve settled down and have generally been very classy at BTSC, AND on other blogs of teams they have beat. None of the crap I see on this thread from steelers fans.

good game

With all the stupid comments going on here, I feel I need to say something. Although, don’t take it too personally. This is a bitter rivalry, and the teams and fans hate each other, so you have to understand that some fans would go over the top and throw it in the face of the enemy. If you guys won, I’m sure a couple of fans from BB would say shit about the steelers on BTSC.

That being said, people have gone over the top. This was a very good game played by two very good teams. I think that you could make the argument that these are the two best teams in the AFC, as the Titans showed their flaws against Houston today. These two teams are going to be very good for the next couple of years, and this rivalry will only get better and even more intense. Personally, I would love to see a rematch in the playoffs so we could have the chance for the 3/3 sweep. The Steelers were the better team today, and they deserved to win the game, plain and simple.

P.S.: Santonio was in. :)

WE DEY!!!!!

you won but i’m not overly impressed…smoke and mirrors again.

by raven on Dec 15, 2008 1:46 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh I dunno abt. smoke and mirrors

I didn’t come over here to talk shit but I think we proved some things today. 1) Our D kept your high scoring offense out of the end zone, even after a TO at the 15 yard line and 2) Our O drove the length of the field for a TD to win the game against a great defense. We have now beat several very good teams and we have been right in every one of our games, even the offensive debacle vs. Philly. I think we can beat anyone in the league.

by houksyndrome on Dec 15, 2008 2:44 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.

You played 60 minutes, we didnt.

And you have already shown you can beat ANYONE! You guys are incredible. Some of the best all around football ive seen from a team.

You get ugly wins, but Steelers play ugly football, and I know you guys love it!

You have to hate losing more than you love winning

Oh I hate it

Are you kidding me? The last two games have been torture. I would much rather win by 30 every week, rather than yelling and screaming at the TV for 3 hours and drinking myself into oblivion.

by houksyndrome on Dec 15, 2008 2:50 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

BTW I also love/hate McClain

You guys should trade him to us for Willie Colon ;) All kidding aside y’all really have a steal there. He is the only guy we have had trouble tackling all year, including Brandon Jacobs.

Can't disagree

you won, plain and simple. blame it whomever you want, but they won and we lost. we’d be the ones gloating and telling the Steelers fans to stop crying about the calls so let’s keep that in mind before we lash out at them just because they’re happy their team won. We all know we’d do the same.

And To Think....

that those dumb raven fans actually thought their offense was better?
With Flacco?
LOL whats his QB rating for today? 22.4????
LOLOLOLOLOLOLLOOLOLOLOLOOLOLOL

hilarious.

Hey Pitt fans, let's stop rubbing salt in their wounds here

A lot of these guys have been civil over at BTSC. Baltimore will continue to be a tough game for us indefinitely. I guarantee that we are not going to reel off 10 straight wins vs. these guys, and we may have to play them again in the playoffs. I know I would hate it if a bunch of their fans came over to BTSC to talk shit after a loss like this. Let’s not give them any more reason to do so.

by houksyndrome on Dec 15, 2008 2:48 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Thanks for keeping it real, guys.

Good luck the rest of the season. Great game next week at Tennessee for the #1 seed. Will be watching that game with real interest! I say you beat them, mainly because you suckers always find a way to win and that’s the mark of a good team and why we hate you so much!
