Ravens Rooting Guide Week 13

The Ravens have surprisingly found themselves in the thick of a playoff hunt.  I didn't expect this at all, but at 7-4, there is no other way to define the Ravens performance this season.  As such, I'll try to post a rooting guide so that people know what non-Ravens games have the most impact to the Ravens chances to get a coveted playoff spot.  Most important games will be listed first.

1) Indianapolis at Cleveland - Boy oh boy have the Browns struggled this season.  It caught me quite by surprise because I thought their offense would carry them through.  DA might have been overrated, but Edwards dropscapades and the struggling of an offensive line that was one of the best in the NFL last year was not something that I had anticipated.  Indy, of course, has recovered from a struggling start to be placed 1st in the Wild Card standings with head to head wins against Baltimore and New England, their two biggest competitors in the Wild Card standings.  Look, let's be absolutely clear, we want Cleveland to win this game.  Badly.  Indy is going to be a really tough team to beat out for the WC due to them having the tiebreaker and a softer schedule.  I don't dislike the Browns as much as some other posters around here, but I think we can all agree that Cleveland winning would be a great boost to our team's playoff chances.

2) Pittsburgh @ NE - This game is actually far more important to our standings as the Ravens will have an easier time beating out NE for a WC spot than Indy and we could easily see Bal and Indy as the two wild cards.  The problem, however, is that in an ideal world, we would want both teams to lose.  If Indy gets WC #5, then NE is our biggest competitor for WC #6.  However, if Pittsburgh loses at NE, that gives us a reasonable chance at taking the division, as we would catch up in the standings and have a chance to put them a game behind in Baltimore.  Pittsburgh will probably have tie-breakers over us, but the tie-breakers are going to be really, really close.  I'm rooting for NE in this game, because it would be awesome to see the Ravens get a home playoff game, but Pitt winning may give us the best chance to make it to the playoffs.

3) Miami @ St. Louis - I think Miami wins this easily, and we have the tiebreaker over them regardless.  However, an upset St. Louis win will help drive away a potential WC competitor.

4) San Francisco @ Buffalo - See #3, then replace all instances of Miami with Buffalo (minus the tiebreaker) and St. Louis with San Francisco.

5) Tennesee @ Detroit - No way TN loses to Detroit, but we should all hope that they do.  On principle, it almost always helps us when an AFC competitor loses to an NFC team, even if it's only a little.  There are some bizzarre tiebreaker situations, but whatever.  In any case, TN losing this game doesn't actually increase our mathematical chances of reaching the playoffs, but it does increase our intangible chances, which took a big blow when TN lost to the Jets.  Why?  Because TN faces Pittsbugh and Indy in the final two games of the season, two of the three biggest competitors with us for a Wild Card spot.  If TN was still perfect, we know they would bring their A game aginst Pitt and Indy.  If TN is seen to struggle at this point, they will have to bring their A game in any case to keep their #1 seed and just in general to keep the team's attitude in shape.

6) Denver @ NY Jets - It's conceivable, although unlikely, that SD could improve and contend with Denver with one of them getting a wild card.  But in actuality, we want the Jets to keep winning so that TN is fighting for the #1 seed and beats Pitt and Indy.

I think these are all the games of consequence for us (minus the most important one)  Hope this keeps everyone's Thanksgiving weekend entertaining.

Nice Post

Very Informative.

Ravens need to take care of business first and foremost. I don’t think Harbaugh will let the guys get too cocky, I see a stifling defensive performance against the Bungles this week. It would be sweet if Pitt and Indy lost though.

Agreed

Tennessee will play to the end, because that’s they way Jeff Fisher has coached and they certainly want the home field advantage throughout and the more they lose the more they need to win out. Other than that, I’m looking to take the AFC North and don’t want to consider a Wild Card slot, as our rematch with the Steelers will determine the rest of that.

We'll need some help to beat the Steelers out for the division title

We have to win our game, but we’ll need someone to beat them as well or they’ll win on the AFC Conference tiebreaker, so make sure to root for the Patriots.

I’d definitely prefer to win the division, but I’d still be happy over a WC. Maybe because I don’t live in Baltimore the difference between a home and away game is slightly less important.

So if we beat them wont it put us ahead?

no...

theoretically if the Ravens win out and the Steelers win every game but ours, both teams will be at 12-4. 1st tiebreaker is head to head, which would obviously be tied. 2nd tiebreaker is division record, and under this scenario both teams would be 5-1 in the division. 3rd tiebreaker is common opponents. 12 of the Ravens/Steelers opponents are common, but the Ravens are 2-0 against non-common opponents, so the Ravens obviously cannot win on this tiebreaker. The fourth tiebreaker is conference record. The Steelers have 1 loss in conference to Indianapolis. We have 3 to Pittsburgh, Indy, and Tennessee. If we beat the Steelers but they only lose that game they will only have 2 conference losses, and the Ravens will have three, so they will win on that tiebreaker.

In short, we need help to win the division. NE would be a good start. I don’t think the Ravens are going to win the rest of their games either (@ Dallas looks brutal), so we really need more than one game’s worth of help. Pittsburgh plays NE, Dallas, Us, Tennessee, and Cleveland. A Pitt loss at home to Cleveland would be absolutely ideal (as we’d have the division tiebreaker assuming a win against Cincy), but I wouldn’t count on it. If Pitt loses @ TN, then we’d could easily tie Conference records. But that wouldn’t help us with tiebreakers most likely as the next tiebreaker is “Strength of Victory” which means combined records of the teams we have beaten. The Ravens have beaten the Eagles, which the Steelers have not. The two NFC teams we could lose to that would allow us to get to this tiebreaker are Washington and Dallas, both of whom have better records than the Eagles, and I would guess that that fact would remain, meaning that the Steelers would get the SOV tiebreaker.

What this means… while we clearly have to beat the Steelers at home to win the division, we need them to lose at least one but probably two other games to have a shot at taking the division.

im prolly stretching here... but im lookin for 11-5 from the Ravens

We take the rest of our home games thats 10-6, then you beat cinci and thats 11-5… 10 and 6 at the least really though.

Im proud of my team thus far though, no one was expecting us to do this good this season, so if we didnt make the playoffs id still be proud

Ravens go 4-1 down the stretch

which is a very reasonable expectation. Also, the Steelers go 3-2 down the stretch, losing at New England and Tennessee. It is also not too hard to see them even losing at home to the Cowboys, finishing up at 2-3 and 10-6 overall and possibly even missing the playoffs (I’d love it!). I am getting greedy, as a playoff spot is the goal, but not only do I want the division title, but the first round playoff bye as well!

I will go with Dallas.

That is the only team I can see us losing to. It is their last game in Dallas Stadium, Saturday Night Football on NFL Network, and Owens loves to play against a team that can talk as much smack as he can. But hey, it would be amazing to shut down that stadium with a loss to the Ratbirds, right?

Exactly

Typical Ravens game where we will need too many things to go right for us to pull of the upset and we will probably play tough and then do the same thing we always do where we snatch defeat from the jaws of victory once again!

I believe the Ravens will beat cincy, washington, pitt., and Jaxx. I also think that we can and will beat Dallas.

FEAR THE NEVERMORE DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your Crazy!

Come on man, everyone knows we cannot do that! The Ravens do not beat teams with Winning Records, everyone knows that! The Eggles didnt count cause they had a tie against the Pussy Cats. We didnt even move in the power rankings after having probably the most dominating defensive performance of the season by any team. Everyone knows we cannot beat winning teams, it is just a fact bro.

I'm looking forward to unleashing our D against Tony Homo

I think we will have a shot in that game, unless Dallas really gets rolling. They have not been world beaters this year, with or without Romo. How sweet it would be to ruin their farewell to Dallas Stadium. For now, bring on the Bungholes.
