Flacco vs Ryan
It is going to be fascinating over the next few years to watch the growth of these two quarterbacks. They will be forever linked as the top two of their draft class. The question is... "Who will be the best?"
Its almost unfair to Flacco given that Ryan was the #3 pick in the draft, was the consensus best QB, and the consensus "most ready to play right away QB." Flacco was tagged with the "best potential" but needed the "most seasoning" given where he played in college, the quality of the competition and the type of defenses he played against.
Ryan is the fiery leader. Flacco is Joe Cool. Ryan reminds me of a young Peyton Manning. Joe Cool reminds me of a young Tom Brady.
Ryan is glitz and splash. Flacco is steady and strong.
Ryan never cracked 60% completion rate in college and he is in the high 50's for this year. Flacco looks like a more accurate passer with a stronger arm and is already above 60% in completion rate.
Flacco as a rookie, in my estimation, already throws the best 15 - 20 yard out pattern in the NFL. The ball explodes out of his hand and is on the reciever so fast the defensive player doesn't have a chance. If you have watched the games this year their have been a number of LB's, CB's, and Safties who thought they were going to jump the route only to find the ball zinging past their ear before they could even get their hands in position.
It will be interesting to watch in the next few years to see how it pans out. My preference is Brady over Manning and Flacco over Ryan. Anyone else feel that way?

I'm a Giants fan
but a Delaware alum, so I’m obviously a huge Flacco fan. I said before the draft that Flacco was gonna be the best QB coming out this year, and I’ve seen nothing to make me change that estimation. Yes, Ryan’s been very, very good, but Flacco had a much tougher adjustment, coming from 1-AA, and has been nearly as good, and is getting better every week it seems. I think they’re both gonna be great players in this league, but I think Flacco is gonna be just a little bit better.
I'm rooting for the Giants to win a shoot-out
though I sincerely doubt that will happen, with our two D’s.
I’ll admit, I’ve hated the Ravens since Super Bowl XXXV, but the last 12 months have shifted my feelings. First, we won the SB, which makes losing in 2000 hurt a lot less, and then you guys drafted my boy Flacco, and another guy I really like, Ray Rice. It feels weird, but I find myself rooting for you guys now! My preference: you lose this week and then win out this season to make the playoffs. You guys would take that, right?
welcome cjmulrain
how do you like that..a welcome (i’m tunring over a new leaf)…this game is going to tell more about us than you. we are due for a big win against a winning team in there city..the ducks are lines up, we just need to pull the trigger. you have a solid team and your record speaks for itself…i am still trying to figure out if the NFC East is for real or just good for tv because of the markets.. lets win one for little ol’ B-more sunday.
Don't forget
Ryan was drafted by the Falcons to definitely be the starter from the time Training Camps opened and was groomed and practiced with the first team from Day One. Flacco was not supposed to even be part of the starting QB battle between Kyle Boller and Troy Smith. He really didn’t practice with the first team offense until the 3rd preseason game. There is a huge learning curve and Ryan had a head start of months over Flacco. For Flacco to be where he is after that, he has made up significant ground on Ryan. To even be mentioned in comparison only proves that Flacco is the quicker learner and has made the most progress. While I’m sure Falcons fans wouldn’t trade Ryan for Flacco, I’m sure we wouldn’t do the reverse either.

flacco vs ryan
I agree with you Rexx. I’d rather Flacco than Ryan as well. Its interesting listening to the talking heads hand the ROY award to Ryan. I think Flacco has played just as well and is a bigger surprise considering where he came from in college. It will be fun to watch over the next few years. So much for the theroy that says you can’t start a rookie QB.
Our Boy
Only reason I can think of Flacco not winning the ROY is because of the start he got off to. At one point 4 weeks ago, Joe had 1 touchdown with 7 interceptions. Everyone was around the league just said “See, he is a rookie from a small name school and is not ready for the NFL, I told you he would not do good his first year.” Well **** them, look at what he has done the last 4 games, 3 of them on the road. Stayed calm in the pocket, made some tight, powerful throws, controlled the clock, and got us points on the board.
Sure, It is amazing to see what Matt Ryan is doing for the Falcons and the NFL after all that their team and the league have been through. However, even though they sit at 6-3, I still cannot see them making a run at the playoffs. The NFC is too competitive this year and 10-6 may not make it still. Their remaining schedule has them going on the road against the Chargers, Saints, and Vikings, along with games at home against the Panthers, Broncos and Bucs.
Our remaining schedule seems to be tough, but if we can focus on winning our 4 remaining home games and get a win at Cinci, that puts us at 11-5 and will sure up a spot in the playoffs. If Flacco can sure us up a spot int he playoffs, not make too many mistakes in the remaining games, I think he will win the ROY. If Ryan is able to make the playoffs, and outplay Flacco on paper, Ryan will win. Hey, that RB from Tenn, Chris Johnson, if he continues to tear up defenses with his speed and agility, he might get over 1000 yards and win rookie of the year. Who knows….
Might get over 1,000 yards?
Dude has 750 or so in 9 games. If CJ stays healthy he’s a lock for 1200 minimum. Forte (and maybe Eddie Royal) will be ROY contenders as well. Really a stellar class of rookies this year.
A lock for 1200!?
Not quite.
On another note, I’ll blog about this during the week, but the schedule all comes down to this:
We need to win the Eagles and Steelers game. If we hold true, we should win the Redskins and Jacksonville games, as well as the Bengals. Then we could “afford” to lose the Giants and Cowboys games, even though we may be able to steal one of them. Even if we don’t, that’s 11-5 which should be good enough to take the division. Don’t want to go into further detail, as I’ll blog about this later in the week.

there is a reason Mason is burning up the league and headed to the pro-bowl..Joe throws YAC passes..something we’re not used to. GO JOE.
His passes get there...
..in time for Mason to turn the reception into YAC. Neither Boller’s or McNair’s passes got there quick enough for that.

i heard someone say today
that they would take Ryan because Flacco’s numbers were from playing weak competition. i have way too much time on my hands, so i figured i’d see if there was anything behind that statement.
Ryan vs. sub .500 teams
vs. Detroit: 9-13, 161 yds, TD – 137.7 rating
vs. KC: 12-18, 192 yds, TD – 120.6 rating
vs. Green Bay: 16-26, 194 yds, 2 TD, INT – 94.1 rating
vs. Oakland: 17-22, 208 yds, 2 TD – 138.4 rating
vs. New Orleans: 16-23, 248 yds, 2 TD – 134.0 rating
Totals: 70-120 (68.6 pct), 1,003 yds, 8 TD, INT – 104.2 rating
vs. teams over .500: 79-130 (60.7 pct), 906 yds, 3 TD, 4 INT – 76.6 rating
Flacco vs. sub .500 teams
vs. Cleveland (twice): 30-48, 377 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT – 89.6 rating
vs. Cincinnati: 15-29, 129 yds – 63.7 rating
vs. Oakland: 12-24, 140 yds, TD – 81.9 rating
vs. Houston: 15-23, 185 yds, 2 TD – 118.9 rating
Totals: 72-124 (58.0 pct), 831 yds, 5 TD, 2 INT – 85.1 rating
vs. teams over .500: 79-119 (66.3 pct), 818 yds, 2 TD, 5 INT – 74.7 rating
Ryan has put up a lot of his numbers, including 120+ QB ratings against Detroit, Oakland, and Kansas City (combined 3-24) and New Orleans (27th rated pass defense). he did play a great game against Chicago (22-30, 301 yds, TD) and that’s a very good defense. meanwhile, Flacco is hurt from three terrible games: Cleveland, Tennessee and at Indy (0 TD, all 7 INT).
i looked up all of these stats so i guess i have to write something conclusive. i think what the numbers reveal is that Flacco isn’t that far off production-wise from Ryan this season (76.6 vs. 74.7 QB rating vs. over. 500 teams). i think both QBs are pretty even at this point and that they’ll both be very good players for a long time.

Flacco faced a very good Cleveland, Tenn., Indy D line. I can’t say one of the lines Ryan faced compare to any of those…
I think lost in the Flacco talk
is the protection he has been getting. Did anyone really expect our O-line being this good? How many young quarterbacks end up getting hurt and/or shell shocked when they get thrown in during their rookie year. We still have a pretty young line right? Of course the penalties have been absolutely frustrating but consider how many teams have had seasons ruined by QB injuries (Houston and New England although those bastards are still in it) I am happy how well the run game is doing and Flacco isn’t banged up.
"When they get drafted by the Baltimore Ravens, we expect them to play like that. Are we surprised? No."

Our line is very young
LT Jared Gaither: 22 years old
LG Ben Grubbs: 24 years old
C Jason Brown: 25 years old
RG Chris Chester: 25 years old
RT Adam Terry (When Healthy and Playing): 26 years old
Currently, Willie Anderson, who was drafted the same year as Jon Ogden, is starting at Right Tackle. But when we have the starting line up we had in the beginning of the year, we have an average age of 24.4 years of age. I am pretty sure that would make us the youngest O-Line in the NFL. And yes, they have been playing extremely well for our offense this year and John Matsko has done a great job of teaching these young men how to be a successful front 5 in this league. In the past, we have always had a great line which opened up the running game many times, but did not protect the QB so well. This group is doing extraordinary things with the running game and pass protection for Joe. They always say that the action starts with the men up front. This group should be proud for what they have been able to do for our team so far this year and I think we have found a group of guys to block for years to come.
Anderson was injured in the Houston game
So we might see the youngest line in the league Sunday, although I hope he’s well enough to go.
